      Yeah after not playing since week 8 last year and no preseason practice I don’t think the first defense you want to go against is TJ Watt and the Steelers. Steelers defense is top 3 if not the best.

      I don't want to take anything away from the Steelers, but any defense is elite when their initial game plan works and the offense does NOTHING to change the scheme. We tried the same thing 50+ times yesterday despite it not working at all. There was no adjustments on offense, we just let Watt tee off on Cousins and did nothing to slow him down. One of the worst called games I've ever seen on offense.

  • @gfweis
    @gfweis Місяць тому +13

    Cousins learned almost immediately that if he tried to pass the ball he would have 2-3 seconds before he was sacked, and sacked hard. He was thereafter clearly rattled by the pressure. It wasn't just Watt. The whole OL got dominated. All the pre-season Falcons hype evaporated after this game. Cousins is not nearly as good as we expected. Not just in mobility, but in accuracy and decision-making. I wonder how many fans now fully expect us to begin 0-3. I'm guessing about 90%. And the offensive game plan was just plain weird. No play-action passes to give Kirk a little more time? No blocking TE on the right side on almost every play to help McGary? (Pitts can't block at all.) Why didn't Zach Robinson adjust?

    • @Ranrally84

    There is only one reason Kirk holds the ball, because receivers are covered like blankets. Like you said, he gets one read on most every play here, the O'line was pummeled in the trenches. You can make adjustments by changing the scheme to accommodate faster developing plays. Screens, use the middle of the field for short darts, jets sweeps, run the ball. All of which they were successful at in the 1st half, but did less of in the 2nd half. Coaches didn't even try to adjust to combat the Steelers interior penetration.
    Get your shots on Kirk now because one thing is sure, you won't even remember this game come week 5. Kirk always flips the script, always.

    @atlnla4112 Місяць тому +1

    First play; no separation by the receivers. The 1st read wr started breaking down before he got to the 45, so the db stopped back peddling to jump the route, so the receiver has to come back to the ball. Bad wr play. Second play; no separation by any receiver again. Best read should have been Allgeire in the flat. Third play you start to see teams don’t respect or expect Cousins to throw deep so they sit on short routes and quick throws. Plus they couldn’t keep Watt out of the backfield long enough to look downfield. So yes, the wr aren’t as good as they think, that’s why Ray Ray got so many looks. And yes, the offense should have played more in Pre-season. You can't hide from injuries.

    @edsmith9855 Місяць тому +2

    Kirk has of course always lacked mobility, but he looked more immobile than usual in this game. It was a flashback to the first couple of years in Minnesota when he was slow to release the ball and had no movement in the pocket, getting a lot of strip sacks. He did improve on this in his later seasons with the Vikes. I think the Achilles was still hurting him, or at least he still was not confident it was healed. I a not a Cousins fan, and am glad the Vikings moved on, but he is definitely (or was before the injury at least) a better QB than he showed in that game. Personally, though, I dont think the Falcons are as talented at the skill positions as a lot of people think, and the O-line clearly was overpowered. It has to definitely be an adjustment for Cousins after having Dalvin Cook in the backfield and throwing to Jefferson, Addison, and Hockinson, possibly the best overall receiving corps in the league when all 3 are healthy.

    I almost feel bad for Falcons fans. We watched this man on the Vikings take over a 13-3 team to only win 8 games when we signed him. 6 years later and we were left in cap with just one playoff win. You are going to hear every excuse why this man could not win the big game. Trust me I have no doubt he will put up big stats this year, but you will be perplexed why Falcons are not winning a lot of games or why is every game so close against lesser competition. You will have games when he starts off slow and the other team takes a big lead. In those situations he will end up with huge passing yards late in the game as the defense plays more off coverage. The most exciting day this offseason was when Kirk didn't resign with Vikings. Now we can rebuild this team. Penix is going to be a stud for you guys!

    The Steelers defense dominated their O-line and gave Kirk no time to throw while at the same time the Steelers secondary clamped receivers and didn’t give easy completions. Drake London went on vacation to Porter island and Kirk is having Vietnam flashbacks of TJ Watt running at him

    i think KOC elevated Kirk, and the elite WRs made his stats look even better. Now Kirk has neither and he is older and slower and coming off an injury, and at 36 is nearing the end. Meanwhile 27 year old Sam Darnold has inherited KOC and Jettas, and all of a sudden looks like a top 3 pick and is throwing an 80% completion rate.

    • @Paula-mv8im
      @Paula-mv8im Місяць тому

      Yeah....thanks for the laugh! You don't beat out a first round draft pick if you're not already elevated in the first place. Even in Washington, McVay said that Kirk could win a championship. Again, he's not gonna say that if Kirk was just so-so.
      Kirk is improving every year as he gets older....top 10 performance in 2022 and then a top 5 performance in 2023. Check his stats sometime.
      Kirk has been making his receivers look good for years. He's had two 1000 yard receivers in Washington and had two 1000 yard receivers for multiple years in Minnesota. And after Jefferson got hurt, he turned Addison into an immediate starter as he would have easily had a 1000+ yards had Kirk not gotten hurt.
      Get real...Darnold is Keenum 2.0. His receivers make him look better than he actually is. The Vikings played the Giants who are not very good. Remember when everyone thought that Dobbs was the real deal??

    The big question is if Cousins has more outings like this, how long does Raheem Morris stick with him? After yesterday it's a very real possibility that Atlanta could start off 0-3 since they have Philly and KC in their next two games. My guess is if it's 0-3 or 0-4 they make the switch to Penix, and this will be remembered as probably the worst free agent signing in pro sports history.

  • @VinegarAndSaltedFries
    @VinegarAndSaltedFries Місяць тому

    Here’s the thing, clearly not healthy. Pressure rattled him, and unlike in Minnesota where he knew the offense and familiarity built up, he doesn’t have that as engrained here. His hot routes/checkdowns aren’t second nature to him yet. Add to that how annoying it is that Atlanta hid all of this stuff with just how healthy and viable it is to have him play QB by not having proper training camp reporting and it being closed off to the public and all this is surprising. But not really once you except he’s a nearly 40 year old QB who just had a major injury and who is in a new offense with new players he’s gotta build chemistry with. 2nd half of the game everyone knew if it was a run or pass play just by how Kirk was taking the ball. This was a disaster and I kinda feel for him because honestly he should not be playing.
