Let's cross fingers that whoever (Indie or Major) actually pulls this off actually does it in a suitable manner and with a better historical understanding than some other WW2 games. That actually might be a reason why haven't seen it, yet: It's probably hard to write too.
I'm okay with having a German Campaign- so long as it it's the Werchment and not the SS. The Werchment were pretty tame compared to the SS, and while they're still Nazis they're no where near as bad as the SS. Plus I'm willing to bet a large portion of the Werchment was made up of Conscripts who didn't align themselves with the Nazis, while the majority of the SS were volunteers and people who were fucked up enough to be assigned to it. Plus a lot of Werchmment generals plotted against Hitler, the most famous of which being Erwin Rommel.
Well...we did get to play as the Red Army during the "Rape of Berlin" in call of duty.

Cross of Iron managed to be one of the all-time great WWII movies, and it's focused entirely on a German unit. I see no reason why other mediums have to limit themselves artistically when it comes to things like this. It's not impossible to tell a realistic story without upsetting people.

It'd be really funny if you do the whole mission without them telling you, then when you complete it the field commander says "Thank you Corporal Hitler" and the camera finally pans to your character.
Funny enough the German campaigns in games like Company of Heroes and Men of War usually end up being my favourite part of those games.

I am currently making a german(It's actually about a Croatian infantry regiment,but they were fighting under the Wehrmacht) campaign spanning from the operation Barbarossa to the german surrender in Stalingrad.I will also make it so that on the beginning and the end of each mission will be a small part of the story related with the map.I already published the first mission as a little preview

Doesn't explain why there was no German campaign in Battlefield 1 though. As it is a game set in WW1, I See no reason why the Germans were clearly presented as evil there too.
The sad part is that the real ass holes of WWI were the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Germany just started to invade neutrals countries just because.

nope, not solved at all. there are _two_ legal issues due to german law: protection of the constitution and protection of the youth. the 'art-option' would only solve some constitutional issues, but the youth protection still would demand regulated advertisement and distribution. since publishers and developers don't want to deal with such regulations, they would still pretty much do, what they do right now.

I guess you could just go the sneakier route that Sniper Elite games do in Germany. Apparently they don't have swastikas and the like. In SE3 for example, they had just had palm tree icons if I'm not completely mistaken. So make a war game where palm tree guys fight against...uh..muscle guys? Give allies a muscular hand icon. Then just make everything else historically accurate.

ReconPro there's a game called verdun where you can play as the central powers, but its a multiplayer game only.
Battlefield WW1 doesn't count?
Vern Etzel well battlefield 1 is not representative of a realistic ww1 experience, verdun is the more historically accurate game.
Vern Etzel BF1 fell into the same trappings of other big name properties presenting WWI stories: "the Germans are the bad guys and are evil".
The whole war was more complicated than they presented it and they did a piss poor way of showing the motivations for either side outside of some cartoony, fan fiction you'd expect from Hollywood.
BF1 didn't include campaigns for the germans, french or russians. Not to mention the latter two were not even available for multiplayer without waiting for the LC and paying extra.

I have never played a WW2 game that comes close to conveying the reality of WW2. The reason is because game designers tend to draw on common perceptions of WW2 rather than the truth about WW2 to create their games. Because if a game lines up with the public's perception of WW2, it will sell.

Of course CoD2 is not perfect, doesn't accurately portray the war. Yet, I think it does, at times, convey the feeling of it well enough.

Even then though, that was somewhat limited. The majority of my games, I spent '36 to mid '39 racing to build my industrial base and focusing my research on industry. Usually, by 1943, I had a greater industrial capacity than the US and USSR combined. But the game always played out, more or less, the same. Poland, Denmark, Netherlands, Yugoslavia in 1939. Belgium, France, Britain, Greece in 1940. USSR '41-'42. Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Spain '42-'43. Africa, M.E. and India '44. US and S.A. '45. Then I would declare war on every remaining nation and steamrole them all.

It manages to include everything other games war games misses (attrition, supply, industry, ideology, political power, doctrine, division design, war support, just to list a few.), and still makes everything fun for you.

in WW2, in Single Player, I don't think so. Multiplayer there are more, of course Red Orchestra 1 and 2. (I think in 1 you had Italian tanks)

I doubt any axis sides have been well represented in shooter games. In real time/grand strategy yes, but not in shooters as those games often make everyone seem more human and you can't make anything naughty like that seem human! In strategy its "ok" I guess because there its almost like looking at hundreds of disposable infantry men and tanks clash and nobody ever seems like a winner.
But that last bit is just me projecting. Whenever I see my troops mowed down in games like company of heroes, I feel real damn bad and even if I win, I feel pretty bad about it.

I would love to see a good (for example) WW2 shooter including a lot of smaller or less popular countries involved. For example Finland, Italy, Brazil, Australia, Romania, Norway and list goes on and on... This could be a great opportunity for everyone to learn about each country involment in WW2. USA vs Germany is prertty much seen already.

I'd propose a simple solution: have a german campaign as DLC
i mean they'd already have to make all the assets (weapons, character models, vehicles) because of the multiplayer anyways, but if it's DLC it could be not available in germany if they want, and you dont have to include it in the advertising

It's interesting to note that games that are actually categorized as Wargames (as opposed to FPS) - I'm talking Close Combat, War in the East, the Operational Art of War, Hearts of Iron, Panzer General and the like - playing as Germany is not only just possible but also by far the most popular choice. The guys at Paradox (makers of HOI among others) did a survey and found that 40% picked Germany as favorite country to play. That's huge number considering that you can play as any nation in that game - from Brazil to Finland to Poland to Canada - not just the majors (UK, USA, Japan, Italy, USSR, China, France).

I think there should be German campaigns in games like this, but the trick is to not glorify the Nazi cause and be historically accurate at the same time. It's not impossible at all, but it just has to be done sensibly, without fascist glorification or unrealistic Antifa propaganda.
I've always thought that a german campaign could start following a soldier in the wehrmacht invading poland then france and then being transported to russia during barbarossa and encircled in stalingrad. The whole campaign seeing war crimes being done by the SS, but saying that what could he do? He was just a soldier. Then the campaign ends with him being marched off into siberia.

But the more he witnesses, the more faith he loses in his government and leadership to the point of disgust, fear, and loathing. So much potential for character development
you're playing as a soldier, not a civilian watching the soldiers. The troops knew about how shit war was, the civilian nazi's...not soo much.

Jeff Kardos Jr. There's a good chance around 1945 certain SS divisions were taking in female soldiers I know the volksturm had a decent amount of women serving.
We live in a world were microsoft is removing the SS badge from Camaro's in forza because people don't understand it means supersport and not schutzstaffel (the badge isnt even close to looking like the ss runes but i digress). We will never get a compelling story for ww2 in almost any game.
If such a game were to exist, probably one of the most interesting aspects would be if there was a mission where you played as a frenchman conscripted into they occupying german army. This would explore the feelings and emotions that are rarely covered, but such detailed stories are difficult to do correctly.

well firstly the quote is wrong it's "history is written by the victors" but more importantly theres tons of platforms which have represented the German and Japanese sides for WWI and WWII, namely All Quiiet On the Western Front from 1930 which imo is one of the greatest war films ever made

Even better, he fakes to betray them and them when he is in the allied army he mows down his entire group of “new friends” while they sleep and trust him just before getting killed too. Imagine the epicity and the plot twist level of a thing like that.

Ngl playing as any axis country would be fun a soldier of Japan would be an amazing story seeing as how many considered it a honourable thing to charge the enemy head on while knowing full well your gonna die. Playing a German in ww2 would be really fun as there are many stories and diaries to copy a story from and tell their story. As well as the Italians when they invaded Yugoslavia with their allies and Africa. Point is major or indie game devs could pull this off but people outside of the gaming community would give them backlash for just telling history whether it's the axis or allies
I think it's sad few WWII games have a German campaign. Sure, you can be afraid to promoteNazi ideology, but you are missing out on a chance to put the German point of view across. Not all German soldiers were monsters, in fact; most of them weren't. My (Dutch) family had German soldiers living with them during the war, and they were kind of embarrassed to inconvenience my grandparents. Onde day, towards the end of the war, my grandmother came into the kitchen, and found this German, perhaps 45, lived through 2 wars, crying because he would be sent to the front and he feared he would never see his children again. That's a hell of a background for a character if you ask me.

Not just germany, there is literally no campaign story mode in any ww2 game I know of where you can play as a soldier from any of the axis powers. It's always allies allies allies fucking allies, I really hope there are story modes where we can see perspectives from not just allied soldiers but axis soldiers as well.

I remember when first COD was coming out I heard there will be campaign for all 3 sides. so I was cool soviets germans and Americans thats gonna be cool. Later I learned they meant brits yanks and ruskies. If it was ok to include ruskies why not germans. they were equally bad only difference is ruskies won the war.
If COD makes a WW2 game from the German side, I am certain that sales with go through the roof. I don't think they understand how many people yearn for a German campaign! Maybe even more than oppose it. People that are neutral certainly would buy in; the German army was very badass (politics aside, cmon!)

The german army was understaffed, underequipped and unmotivated for most of the war after 42. This guy actually points out many of the shortcomings of the german army and the luftwaffe. Their uniforms were nice and there were probably a lot of nice people and great minds in there, but they were fighting for an insanely wrong cause and most people will not resonate with that.
The plans for the war against France and Poland were already prepared by the Wehrmacht high command when Hitler took office. He simply preponed the date from 1945 to 1939 because he was in a hurry for several reasons.
However if someone else had been in charge it wouldn't have turned into a world war. So you are right, I guess.

Sorry, that is not correct. Germany was fighting for its own suvival. Churchill was talking already in 1936 that germany must be destroyed, no matter what political system is there.
It was all about economy and the regional conflict with poland served england the reason to declare war and make a world war of this regional conflict.
Ok my sons and I had this same conversation.There are probably 2 ways of doing this and not majorly pissing people off.The first would be the reluctant soldier narrative.Not hard to do because it's pretty common,at their height only 12% of Germany were party members and about 30% of the country were supporters. Make these facts obvious and that many soldiers were just protecting their family from retribution,they were well aware of what would happen if they didn't serve loyally and well.Plus they were fed a steady diet of propaganda about how bad prison camps were in allied nations.And when your point of comparison is Nazi run prison camps...well you'd be scared too.Plus note how massively unfair the treaty of Versailles was,because it was.This would paint a more complete picture of the average German soldier,who were patriots not Nazis.Of course if you want a more fanatical soldier you could go route 2,risky but could be more rewarding.Just go the Spec Ops the Line route,a descent into realization.It'd be way harder to do but ,wow,if you did it right.Oh I'm ethnicaly Jewish btw,we're atheists but that wouldn't have mattered back then.
Stephen Cody There's a lot of room for human exploration in a German soldier's narrative, which I would find fascinating. The problem is how palatable it would be for the general public, or at least those who supposedly represent the public.
Another interesting way to spin the "reluctant soldier narrative" would be to have the campaign be from the perspective of someone of Austrian, Alsatian, or even Czech background who was forced into the military, has no sense of patriotism in the sense of "Defending the Fatherland," and is simply trying to survive the war at this point. If you really wanted to heighten the stakes, you could have the soldier's officers frequently telling the player how badly they'll be treated if captured for the whole campaign. At the very end, you could undermine all the propaganda by having him captured at the end of the campaign and treated comparatively well (obviously this last part would only work on certain fronts).
My personal recommendation (all of the recommendations here solid too) is to have someone who is into the heroism of it, but steadily becomes disillusioned as the war drags on. A story of naivete.
Seriously you estimate only 30% Germans supported the cause? What about Autumn 1940 - after a brilliant campaign in France, and in Poland before that? After laying their hands on all the assets of the conquered lands, getting free/cheap labour?
I'm just using available data.A lot of Germans were pissed about Versailles,and rightly so,but they had no love for Nazis.Most generals wanted revenge and approved of remilitarization,but weren't Fascist at heart.Plus popular opinion always favors a winner,and they were certainly doing that at first.The problem with saying how much support the Nazis had is support was mandatory and brutally enforced.We've got a "democracy" and the current leader's got a 30% approval at best,you really think an autocrat needs more?

#1 the script for that would be hard to write and not come off as either a Neo-Nazi/Nazi sympathizer or pretentious. particularly if your story takes place on the eastern front (the Werchment took part in war crimes with the same coldness as the SS).
#2 the game would get a lot of bad press (though Modern Warfare 2 was somehow able to make this work with the whole shooting up an airport).
an interesting outline of a story.
you play as Jean Delannoy. the story starts in 1940 Jean has been called up as a reservist of the French Army, he takes part in fighting during the French Campaign only to be forced to surrender when his position is over run.
as a POW Jean is offered to join the LVF (a French anti-communist volunteer force set up by the Wehrmacht). he is trained in the use of German weapons and tactics before being sent to the Eastern Front where he takes part in the middle-late stages of Operation Typhoon. after the failure to take Moscow the LVF is sent to Belarus for anti-partisan duty. during the endless patrols and skirmishes with the partisans in the back country of Belarus Jean is confronted with the brutality of the German occupation of the country (the player character should either be forced to take part in or forced to watch the mass execution of civilians as reprisals against the partisans). the story then shifts to the Ukraine where the LVF was again tasked with hunting down partisans.
in September 1944 the LVF is transferred to the SS and becomes the 33rd Waffen Grenadier Division "Charlemagne". Jean then takes part in the defense of western Poland (early 1945). the story then jumps to the Oder Front March/April 1945 where SS Charlemagne attempts to hold a section of the river against Soviet crossings.
the final chapter of the campaign takes place in Berlin as SS Charlemagne is folded into SS Nordland. the game ends with a small break out from the doomed city of Berlin.

I wholeheartedly agree. The struggles and hardships endured by the Wehrmacht's men go grossly unnoticed, unappreciated, and very disrespected.
They were volunteers and conscripts, just like the Americans or British. They came from a variety of backgrounds and beliefs (spoiler alert: not every German rifleman was a dedicated Nazi, just like every Russian wasn't a dedicated communist, or American being a dedicated Democrat). They fought for what they thought was right and just, for they were told that Germany had been betrayed, and that Hitler's expansionism would undo the damage done. And, in essence, they WERE betrayed. The Allies used Wilson's 14 Points as a persuasion tool, but ended up with something very harsh. Perhaps someone could build off of that? Because I have NEVER seen a game based on the Early war period (France, Poland, the Low Countries, etc). Only until the Americans get involved that 80% of WW2 games have their setting in.

But the general Army was different: Not every grenadier, tank driver, and artilleryman was a fanatic NatSoc who worshiped Hitler. A good portion of their ranks were conscripts. And a couple thousand still served Hitler as they did the Weimar Republic.
They were lied to. They were betrayed. They were humiliated. You didn't have to be a Nazi to share in that anger

General Biv People fought against the Nazis from within the system and within the state. Some died for it. Those were the honorable people. Not every soldier was evil, but they weren't honorable or good.
And in the end, the real heroes in the Wehrmacht were the defectors.

Strategy games don't seem to have a problem with it, and I think it has a lot to do with how the scale of the player's perspective relates to the player's experience.
In a strategy game, you are the commander, and this means you have more control over your tactics and your situation; gameplay takes the form of ambushes, planning defenses, counter attacks, you might have logistics to manage, and objectives to capture and hold not just in a narrative context, but in a way that is represented through game mechanics. Strategy games can focus their narratives on more specific german victories like the Battle of Arnhem because the gameplay mechanics lend themselves well to mission variety and a more tangible sense that the player is accomplishing something.
In most shooters, you are a member of a squad, your experience is limited because you follow wherever the squad (and the narrative) is going; in most shooters, your primary gameplay mechanic is combat, your secondary gameplay mechanic is pressing an interaction button. The variety that a shooter presents often comes from its environments (as well as movie references); and the sense of accomplishment often comes in the form of "big picture" things, like the Battle of Berlin, the Liberation of France, or the defeat of the Afrika Korps. A German campaign wouldn't be able to provide the same feeling of momentum and victory that an allied campaign can, even if you were to focus on German victories, because any ending you give the campaign would still be undermined by the unspoken "and then we lost"

Day of Infamy is a good, realistic, ground war (16vs16) multiplayer game with german voicelines, scenes and equipment but no campaign unfortunately. Still makes you think about history though so thats why i post
I played in COD 2 as "German campaign". It's just a mod that replace sides. But it's have a cool atmosphere like killing bolsheviks in the snowy Stalingrad/Moscow.

Red Orchestra 2 had a single player "campaign" where you play as a soldier of the Wehrmacht. They really handle the axis very tasteful in RO2. It's worth checking out, and it's active enough that there are a fair number of full servers still up.

Honestly, a WWII first person shooter game that would have a German game would be impossible to write unless you're ok with early victories, but that wouldn't be a fulfilling story would it? Strategy games on the other hand, make German campaigns justice. CoH Europe at War had an amazing German campaign
It's not just German campaigns. It's no axis campaigns, and not even Finnish campaigns, even tho we only allied with Germany, since it was our only option.
The answer is much simpler than that. The modern audience expects homour in their games and it would break immersion for there to be a funny German in game

As a soldier I guess I just miss what is supposed to be humorous about a war, or fighting a battle, where you are scared most of the time.
'Brothers in Arms' and 'Red Orchestra' both have german single-player campaigns.
Interestingly, strategy games don't seem so hampered. Even going back to the early 2000s, Sudden Strike, Hearts of Iron and my personal favourite Blitzkrieg had German/Axis campaigns. It strikes me as odd, as you'd think the strategic layer would be more problematic, rather than less. (i.e there is more of the "we're they invaders not the liberators" , more of the industrial and political side of things, rather than just the "boots on the ground" story)
But, strategy games have for the longest time been more about the kind of depth and good old fashioned nerdy interest in things like logistics and organisation than simply big explosions. They're the thinking mans games, rather than the michael bay movies of interactive entertainment. I make strategy game mods myself :) it's one reason I take such an interest in your channel as I try and incorporate as much realistic elements as possible (especially TO&Es and logistical elements, often sorely lacking)
I think it's quite ridiculous that the germans get cut out of the limelight. While the Reich definitely was not the good guy by any means in the second world war, there were still singular heroes and in the second half, once Germany came on the backfoot, some of these men just started fighting for their fatherland and less so the regime that controlled it. The Last Tiger war story in BFV showed that it's perfectly possible to take a small segment from the late war and portray a german tank commander without glorifying him as anything more than just being a human towards his crew.
I understand that companies don't want to sell Germany as the underdog, considering they were the agressor, but considering the way they fought tooth and nail until the end I believe they deserve some recognition. Hell, I'd love to see a german perspective against the Soviet warmachine. Considering the russians are probably the second most favourite "bad guy" faction in games, it could even work out in not offending any of the social justice crowds.
In the end, all sides had heroes. The constant dehumanizing of some German heroes that fought for nothing but god and country genuinely saddens me. Some of them, maybe even most of them were monsters. But that doesn't take away from the fact that by 44, 45 they were fighting by the skin of their teeth, to protect their homes and families.
I remember my very first shooter: ironfront liberation 1944 it has a german and a russian campaign and i really loved that game even though the controlls were hard af for a "first time" gamer but it was just great because it was the first time I saw games getting close to actually depicting that weird soldiers humor and also not having that stereotypical story starting with D-Day and following the americans

Honestly I would love to play a German camping and to be able to play as German soldier even my country and grandads fought against Germany in WWI and WWII I have great respect for thier military and they had defenitly the best weapons and uniforms

You would have to put in moments of humanity, German soldier playing with a kitten, telling a new guy how to deal with trauma, but then you are humanizing "Nazis," and that's against the narrative.
The trick is to have your average German soldier doing it

Another interesting scenario would be an alternate history where Operation Unthinkable took place. The story could take place through the eyes of a disenfranchised German who is once again being forced to march back through land he just retreated from.
I would play the hell out of that. Game starts with you as a conscript in '43 or '44, ends in '46 or '47 with Moscow being nuked.

The controversy could come across as a good selling point for the game, I'm sure millions would be Interested in a WW2 game from a German perspective. Could be a story about a young Wehrmacht recruit who has much admiration and confidence in the Reich at first but then after witnessing/partaking in war crimes for the first time and as the war draws to a close he begins to question who he is fighting for (do you as a player go along with it or try to find a way out) Would make for a decent telltale inspired game.

The Censoring of video games has been far harsher than movies, one of the reasons is because its an interactive medium you are not just witnessing it you are taking part. Historical accuracy also plays a huge role, and obviously also how you display the crimes. The Cencorship has become less over time. I personaly think this video somewhat inaccurate, even if we dont call Rech Orchestra a Tripple A Title it was a big title for sure.

Yup. Most will try to avoid talking about it all together. Some of the more nationalist people say that the oil embargo was a US threat to the country. Japan was just as bad, if not worse than the Nazis when you consider Nanking, POW treatment, and Unit 731. But they tend to focus on the suffering, like the A bomb. This type of talk comes from the older generation. It's a huge difference with young people. I like having the chance to see both the American and Japanese perspective.
I unfortunately only know things from the allies, and a bit about the Wehrmacht, because I met a Leutnant from this time a few years ago. The best games I know about ww2 are Red Orchestra/Rising Storm (and the good old Day of Defeat: Source), I really enjoy those games, perhaps you know them. If not you should give them a try :D (btw sorry if my english is not that good, I'm from germany)

“The Last Tiger”
Once again, Germany making Europe a bit more unpleasant. I've heard that WW2 may have been unpleasant back then, but causing me to have censored video games goes one goosestep too far...
Anyone who wants to play a very historically accurate WW2 first person shooter should definitely look into Forgotten Hope 2. Technically it's a modification for the old Battlefield 2 however it may as well be standalone because EVERYTHING has been changed/updated/tweaked and it is still being developed. You can play as Germany, and there's even a good single player too. You can play as USA, Britain, Canada, Italy, New Zealand, Finland, Russia, and Germany. They have North Africa, Western Front, and Eastern Front maps. All maps are based off of real battles, you won't find weapons there which weren't actually there in reality. For example you won't find the STG-44 in a map from 1941. The developers spend months researching the actual battlefields when making a new map. Omaha Beach for example is an absolute spitting image of the real Omaha Beach landings. My favorite map is Seelow Heights, and you can match pictures of the original Battle for Seelow Heighs with the game map. It's truly awesome and beats Call of Duty ten times over. I'm not even sure the total number of vehicles, weapons, and maps but it is A LOT. I pretty much only play single player so I can play whatever map I'd like, but for multiplayer there is always a server which reaches 80+ players daily during peak times. There's also another FH2 community called CMP who released a whole new Pacific Front mappack & Japanese faction which you can play as well as many new Axis & Allied vehicles/weapons.
if a computer gaming company would portray the bad stuff done by both sides and the main character would understand that as well, but just shown as a person who is fighting for his own family and country, not for the bad stuff that it stood for, I think such a game would actually catch a lot of attention and get good sales
It annoys me that the WW2 perspective is always taken from the American PoV as if WW2 started in 1943 when the U.S (or the allies but the U.S forgets this) invaded Morroco. Completely sidelining the other nations allies and axis alike.

If you are portraying it as it was, and are not glorifying anything, I see no problem with a German oriented campaign. If you, for example, had a story of a young German soldier, inexperienced and new, starting out in the war, and seeing the horrors of war, and potentially the horrors of their own side, it would probably do more to quell any negative reactions than if you simply did the same old ‘allies good and perfect, axis evil and inhuman’ routine. Every game I’ve played, you are always the allies. You always get the same guns and weapons etc. if you were playing as an axis soldier, you could be so much more varied in weaponry, the perspective could be completely different, you could show the hardships of late war Germans and the desperation. Late campaign you could be up against semiautomatics and automatics whilst you are using open bolt SMGs made from piping, cheaply made rifles, and anything you can find. The difficulty scaling could simply come from realism. If you are playing the allies, later missions where you would realistically be up against weaker forces with progressively worse morale and equipment, the enemy are always still more formidable than when they were fresh.
Would be great to take the 1993 Stalingrad movie and make a game off it.

I haven't seen any German campaigns in a FPS, but I've played at least one in a RTS (Real Time Strategy) game. There's a German campaign in Empire Earth I where you play as Germany in WW1 in four missions and WW2 in three missions. The WW1 section covers a part of the Eastern Front, the Battle of Jutland, the Battle of Verdun and the final German offensive at the end of the war. The WW2 section covers the invasions of Poland, Franch, the low countries, Denmark and Norway, then the Battle of the Atlantic and then a fictional successful Operation Sealion.
If there can be movies from German pov about ww2, why not games?? But anyhow meh this isn't really that important and fps sucks anyway, hail Paradox.

The game Red Orchestra 2 which has unfortunately removed its campaign but you can still download more or less as a mod had both the Russian and German campaign with the German campaign being more of a training one. To this day it's the only game I've ever seen with an actual German campaign
