Spring Rain, Watering early potatoes in Buckets

  • In our first spring month my buckets of vegetables were standing in my greenhouse avoiding any late frost but also not catching any rain that fell. Part way through the second Spring month I moved them out into my garden. Any rain that fell after that fell on the buckets but how much of it actually got into the buckets, not a lot. Check out this short demonstration that Molly and me posted some years ago.

Hello Jim, all great advice and demonstration. Consistent watering is one of the
most important things to do, to success in the garden.

Loved the part with Molly getting a drink.
Going back to your last video, this one was when you taught me what the rose holder was for.

I don't have an official rain gage like yours but I left a 5 liter bucket outside last week. Today is the 1st sunny day in a out 8 days. The bucket was 3/4s full of water. It was empty when I left it.

If you have a big plant growing in a small bucket you will need to water that bucket regularly even if you're getting some rain.

It took me longer than I'd like to admit to get from rows to rose.

That's why I put containers around to catch the rain water and then fill my watering cans from there and water properly at the base of the plant so they get that magical rainwater.

I've been rather blessed so far. About every two days it rained here and it would be an all day and night rain. My soil in the pots was wet and the plants certainly love it. As a note, Jim, I replanted those Red Sun shallots, that mysteriously sent up seed stalks last year(I wonder if the heavy smoke from Canada caused this) and this year they are doing the same. In fact, one isn't dividing at all and looks like a giant leek(HA!). So you're right, it's not a good idea to replant such. I told the wife we'll eat all of them, since I got a good buy on some Dutch Yellow shallots and some Yellow Potato onions, which will be done by the end of summer. I'll save some of them for replanting next spring.
