I was born in 1959...and I remember a childhood on Long Island, NY where you didn't lock your doors at night and you could leave your windows open. I remember playing with my friends all day and being out of the house (no cell phones, of course!) and not going home till dinnertime. Our parents didn't worry about our safety. Nobody worried about your safety back then. We built tree forts in the woods (yes, woods!) before suburban cookie-cutter houses took up every corner of the Island. As a teenager, we use to hitch- hike to the beach without worrying we were going to be assaulted or kidnapped....or worse. It was a time of innocence that sadly is gone forever. I'm glad I grew up in those days, because the world was a much better place then!

Everyone’s mom was your mom, everyone’s dad was your dad. Everyone looked out for each other, and people tended to share what little they had. The Wizard of Oz was televised once a year, and time stopped while every child was glued to the TV. The school gym was opened on Saturday for Dodgeball, and everyone showed up. You wore your school clothes to school and changed into play clothes when you got home. Boys were boys and girls were girls... there were no questions about that!

The aluminum trees were made after WWII. The company is a short distance from me in Manitowoc, WI. Today they are still around and at Christmas have their windows with many aluminum trees in varied colors. My parents always got flocked trees. When they got too expensive we got a green artificial tree. We had a color wheel for our flocked trees. I can still smell it when it got hot running hours on end. I remember having a troll doll in the 60’s. When the Troll movie came out I got my grandkids each one. I always thought the hair color on the trolls was so crazy. Now, I drive down the street and see kids and people with the same hair colors. I wish I could teleport back to the 60’s and early 70’s.

They provided us with a life of fun, fascination, crafts, vacations, souvenirs, slides on our projector we still have n fashions n hair do's n toys n projects n holidays like no other generation ever had before or since, because we also had family, n our family had stuck together to this day!!! I actually just came back from a "Sister's Yearly Reunion Vacation" for two weeks where we sisters get together n hang out n do roadside attractions n motels n stuff like cook family recipes together play board games n swim n play croquet on the lawn like when we were kids growing up!!! Thank you ever so, Mom n Dad n Grandparents n aunts n uncles n cousins, that made our lives so gracious n wonderful and exposed us at early ages to all the finer things in life!!! When it comes to Pitts, when I hear of a vicious one, I blame the owner more than I blame the dog. I have had numerous Boxer and two that I had were brother and sister. The male was huge, but not aggressive unless I was threatened or "his" territory was invaded (His yard, our house) But the female, who was also not aggressive at all until she was 2 yrs. old, and then for some unknown reason, she could not be taken anywhere without a muzzle on her. I was born in 1963, and my first bike had a banana seat and swept-back handlebars. We took baseball cards and attached the cards to the front fork with clothes pins so that the cards flapped when the spokes hit them, which I think was an attempt to mimic a motorcycle. My first toy gun was a little rifle- styled toy that you fitted a cork to the end of the barrel, cocked the lever, and when you pulled the trigger, the cork popped out, but you didn’t lose the cork because it was attached with a string. Also, we had cap guns: imitation guns that you’d feed a long red strip of paper that had little pockets of gunpowder in it, so that pulling the trigger made the hammer come down on the gunpowder and make a pop. Also, we had small 45 (rpm, I think) records with a song on each side, and a big hole in the middle that you fitted with a red plastic piece that had a small hole in the center.
Btw, (new edit), every year when I was a kid - and I think this extended into the ‘70s - one of the networks on our 12-channel TV played The Wizard of Oz once a year, and it was an event we always waited for and watched. Also, games we played were Cowboys versus Indians, and flashlight tag. Also, around 1968 and ‘69, when I was in kindergarten and first grade, we practiced Duck and Cover in the hallway of the school- getting in line against the wall, getting down on our knees, and going into a protective crouch.

@@julenepegher6999As a guy, I never understood why girls with curly hair straightened it, and girls with straight hair, curled it, lol. Am I missing something?
Or is it just like Lady Grantham on Downton Abbey said, "I'm a woman, Mary...I can be just as contrary as I choose!" 😂

@@DUCKDUCKGOISMUCHBETTER hahahaha, true. I still straighten my hair til this day. Back then all the girls had long straight hair. It seemed all the boys liked the girls with the straight hair. That was my logic. I guess you always want what you can’t have. 😅

I miss my Troll dolls! And they still make Quisp cereal! I get mine at Holiday Market in Royal Oak, Michigan…I usually find them in the old fashioned grocery store chains still around in the USA…. I remember seeing Kaboom cereal in a town grocery outside Grand Rapids, Michigan. Such memories….😀👍

We had a relative who worked at General Mills, so we got to be consumer product testers for Kaboom cereal before it was named or marketed, and the accompanying survey invited us to suggest a name for the cereal. Our suggestion was "Funny Fruit Faces."

You missed curtains, movie theater curtains that drew up or opened and closed at the beginning and end of the film. It always looked funny when the end of the credits got played on the wavy, colored curtains !:-)

I remember the last of the 1960's. I remember going trick or treating around my naberhood and of one house in particular where the person who lived there worked at Disneyland and he would bring his work home, boy was it fun. I grew up going to the pool and the beach and seeing the first man on the moon, that I sew on the TV. Good times. I miss them. Love from Marysville California

I still remember when it was common to have the word "sugar" in cereal names before it all went away in the late 70s. There was Sugar Smacks, Super Sugar Crisp, Sugar Frosted Flakes, and Sugar Pops, and probably a couple.of others I can't think of. I don't know who the companies thought they were fooling with those name changes while the ingredients didnt change, but as a kid I honestly preferred the "sugar" names!

I swear to god, there was a Captain Crunch TV commercial that bragged about it having multiple types of sugar. My pancreas is cramping up just thinking about it.
