  • Martin McDonagh's 2008 directorial debut is seriously funny and deathly serious. It's about two hitmen, played by Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, who are forced to layover in Bruges, Belgium for two weeks.
One loves Bruges, the other doesn't. Both find it remarkable -- a purgatory, a hell, a fairytale, a movie, a dream, a fantasy. Why? They both labor under heavy sin and guilt.
This video reviews and analyzes In Bruges, discussing why it is a great movie. Partly that's because of McDonagh's complex script. Partly that's because Farrell and Gleeson are so funny.

I really enjoyed this film. I loved the interplay between the two main characters and the absurdity of the situation, and I also loved the humanity of them. Some of the humour in this film is so dark and sometimes I was cringing and laughing, especially in the last 15-20 minutes. I was entertained and feel like I want to watch it again to appreciate and catch anything I missed the first time. I also loved the cinematography and wonderful shots. There was a great one when Harry is stalking through Bruges with a gun in his hand and the camera is low, capturing the gun and Harry's coat billowing as he walks. Just one example! I also liked how the dwarf/small person/ midget was a well drawn character and the actor did a great job there.

I loved this film, it's dark, sometimes creepy but very very well written and realized. I bought the dvd so I can rewatch it whenever I want it. Excellent review.

04:36 I'm sorry but Bruges did not become a Tourist attraction because of this movie. Bruges already was a famous tourist destination long before this movie came out

I mean….I want to visit Bruges because this is one of my favorite films of all time.
Bruges seems kinda like Nashville: was always a regional European tourist attraction but now it’s got global interest.

Colin Farrell out-acts Brendan Gleeson. That never happens. Nobody out-acts Brendan Gleeson.
Then he did it again last year.

I enjoyed this movie more than Three Billboard Outside Ebbing Missouri. Either way, both are great films.

I like the same things you do about the movie (especially the humor, I now laugh anytime I hear "alcove") and that's why it's a top tier movie for me. I wonder what criteria this film misses for it to not be a top tier film for you?

just not as complex. I'm not dissing it. "Three Billboards" improved on it -- several more complex characters, potent meditations on many substantive themes, using advanced film grammar, sound, etc. Top-tier is, e.g., "Children of Paradise" or "Come and See." I wish they, the movie studios, made more films as good as "In Bruges." Seems like that's possible, but McDonagh makes it look too easy.

For me, In Bruges was really good in the first half of the film with the low key-ish comedic banter between the two main characters. Unfortunately enough I think the film kinda ran off a cliff when the over-the-top cartoonish Ralph Fiennes character was introduced.

Christmas Story??????? What part of the movie references Christmas in any way? ( I did enjoy your review though)

Easy to search and find the answer.

@@LearningaboutMovies Well I watched the movie recently. And I did not see any reference to Christmas.. And your review seems to reference this as a 'Christmas Movie' in some way. So, I thought that I might ask you. ! Before I decide to 'search' for the answer somewhere else. Seeing that I'm basically asking YOU why you see it as a Christmas movie... and due to the fact that I have never seen anyone else ... anywhere else ... including online reference it in this way...
