This is very basic logic, and his "vending machine" doesn't even need you to vend anything... His soldering is awful, dear i even say gross...

You can create logicgates out of anything since the main part of a computer are logic gates it’s possible to do. Also see Matt Parker’s domino video

The man did not make a computer out of cardboard. He made a reversible 2-channel spring loaded button. The second piece he makes is a normally closed limit switch that cuts the wire responsible for lowering, when the "platform" is in position. This is very simple ladder logic technology. There is no "computer" in this at all. Basically he made a button and a switch out of cardboard.

The only thing this vending machine doesn't do is keeping beverages cold... but who cares, a glass with some ice makes up for it, and the can pops out of the machine in a really cool way.
