      I had a friend who drove a purple Duster. She drove it over to my house one day in high school (this was at the end of the last millennia). I was shocked to see that she could drive a 5 spd. I couldn’t get over how basic it was, but she loved it.

    Those Sundance’s were nothing fancy but ran forever. I worked at Dodge and I did a few water pumps and a lot of valve covers. The occasional distributor pick up would go bad. Simple to work on too.

    I remember doing driver’s ed in a 90 something Plymouth Acclaim. One 300 lb instructor and three students to a car for every class. The driver was insistent we couldn’t merge onto the 401 until we were doing 100 on the on ramp. Maybe that car got up to 100 on the ramp when he was driving alone, but it sure as hell didn’t with over 700 lbs of passengers.
    I had that thing pinned and couldn’t make it past 90 so the instructor kept using his brake pedal extension and forcing me onto the side of the highway telling me I wasn’t being aggressive enough on the gas. I told him I was being plenty aggressive but the hampsters weren’t spinning the wheel and he’d always get mad.

    I like watching these retro shows because it puts things in perspective. People place a lot of value in material things that really are just fleeting desires. Most of the things people wanted back then would be considered shit by today's standards, and I'm sure the same will be said 30 years from now. Just goes to show you that health, family and friends are more important in life.

    My mother bought one of these new (I want to say the 92 or 93 model). It had the automatic seatbelts. I don’t remember her having any issues with it either. It wasn’t a base model. Had AC, auto tran, tape deck, black paint with red pinstripes, and a very comfortable deep red cloth interior. I always thought it was a sharp little car.

      @@tomnyboy0916 I mean... I'm a car guy 100%. I drive anything with 4 wheels and a steering wheel. But Even I have a hard time justifying keeping one alive... There are cheap, underpowered, unequipped cars that are still fun like the Honda Civic EH2. But this car is just... Boring. The steering is incredibly muted and bland. The 3 speed auto is... Well, a 3 speed auto. And the engine, although the 2.5 has low end torque, which is the one I have, it really has no acceleration. It doesn't want to rev. And it's not too good on the MPG. Mine is a little newer than the one on the video and has a new grille which looks much better, but at least the design of the car has aged well IMO compared to, for example, a Neon. Overall... I'm keeping my '93 2 door for a while more because I'm a broke Mexican college student and I can't afford much more at the moment. Also, I already changed the tranny, tires and a lot of suspension parts, the paint is good, and the engine too. So I guess it's a good car, but not one you wanna keep for long. I'd much rather have an '89 Accord or something like that.

      Doug is clueless when it comes to older cars especially mainstream economy cars. He would moan about it not having power windows or door locks despite that usually being an up level option in 91 and then proceed to say something stupid like "I can't believe it doesn't even have bluetooth"

    My grandfather bought a new Sundance America 2 dr in 1992, his 1st new purchase since 1969. His car's only options were a/c, dual outside mirrors w manual control, auto, and a 2 speaker am/fm radio that sounded horrible. Car was about 9 grand. The 2.2 w the auto had near zero power w the a/c on, but with it off at a steady 70mph cruise, it got high 30s in mpg. While the car gave him no mechanical problems, 2 things plagued it.. Peeling paint due to a crappy primer from the factory, and tail lights that would fill w water after a rain or a car wash. After several attempts by Chrysler to fix that, he got frustrated and drilled 3/8ths inch holes in the bottom of the lense underneath it where u couldn't see them, 2 in each side. Like it or not, it fixed the issue. In 1995 he had a stroke and couldn't drive anymore. My aunt got it next. She drove it 76k before selling it, w only maintenance and wear items to replace. She sold it because she was tired of how bad its continuing peeling paint looked. Overall though, it was a very reliable economy car that ran cheap and only broke down once for a battery. If 1 can find 1 nowdays that hasn't rusted to the ground, I say buy it. It's a very simple car that's easy to maintain. And a whole lot better than an L body!

    My sister bought a 1988 Sundance and loved it. When it was 4 years old it developed piston slap in the 2.2 liter. Plymouth sold csrs back then with 50,000 mile or 5 year powertrain warranty. My good friend was the master tech at the local Dodge dealer and completely rebiult the engine, including machining the block and freshening the head. Afterwards, the engine was not only quiet, but I suspect the machining must have increased the displacement as well. I visited the dealerwhile the repair was conducted and all the parts were boxed in Chrysler brand stamped containers. My sister kept that car and gave it to my niece. It died with 130k on the odometer and was 10 years old.

    My father in law had one of these years ago. That year we rented a large cabin on top of a mountin in Galinburg TN. It snowed a hour b4 we got there so the steep road to the top, yeah 4x4's couldn't get up so all of us had to walk. A hour later after it had gotten dark and much colder, he came walking in. I asked him how he liked that long steep walk and with a big smile on his face he replied, I drove up didn't you?
    17 yrs latter and I have yet to figure out how this car made it up that snown/ice covered road😂

No over-engineering or complicated mechanical failures, the only things I remember being a major issue with them were tail light wiring problems with both of mine and a timing belt in my last one (interference engines, which I didn't know about until the timing belt broke on my blue '94). They were alot more durable than the '95 Neons that replaced them.

Turning a wrench back then I was able to get all the parts at cost and the car was extremely cheap to buy at $300, with tires I put about a thousand into it and drove it for 3 years. For a small car it was extremely roomy for tall guy like myself that's probably the only thing it had going for it.

    Unfortunately the Plymouth Sundance and Dodge Shadow represented the last of the decent small car offerings from Chrysler period replaced by the Dodge and Plymouth neons which will go down in infamy for being some of the worst small cars ever crapped on to the American Road the Shadow and Sundance we're pretty decent cars and gave their owners decent reliability up to about the 10-year mark. Head gasket issues and body Rott were two of the biggest killers of these Chrysler cousins along with some issues with the automatic transmissions.

    The Dodge shadow/Plymouth Sundance were definitely the last decent small car offering to have ever come from Chrysler to date. This Cousins when in base level trim turned out to be pretty reliable and lasted a long time provided the owners took care of them and they worked driven in the Northeastern States where they tended to get eaten up by rust. It's sad that a decent little car like this was replaced by the ghastly in very poorly built/engineered Dodge/Plymouth neon. Although the Sundance/shadow Tended to serve their 1st and 2nd owners as decent and reliable transportation they tended to be largely forgettable Little runabouts. Chrysler also did a major disservice to the twin cousins by constantly comparing them to other a much more worthy competitors like the Honda Civic and Toyota corola.

      Mazdas were pieces of shit from this era. Chrysler was actually known for being the most reliable domestic brand if you read the Consumer Reports from the late 1980s to early 1990s. Quality and Reliability was not only good at Chrysler during this era (but rivaled Toyota at the time) -- they actually had the longest warranty in the entire industry at 7 Years / 70,000 miles. Then Eaton ran their reputation into the ground by rushing products through engineering (during the mid 1990's) and Chrysler's reputation never recovered.

    • @LakeHowellDigitalVideo
      @LakeHowellDigitalVideo 6 років тому +4

      Most definitely. K-cars were hot sellers -- the incentives made them incredibly tempting. I know my parents scored a brand new 1988 Reliant LE for $5995 after incentives (about 3 grand less than MSRP). They may have been stodgy, but the powertrains were quite reliable especially the 2.2 / 3 Speed Torqueflite combo. My parents managed 300k mile on that Reliant on only a transmission rebuild.

    Sundance was a much better car than Neon. Neon was crap, it felt and looked cheap, regardless of its “bubble eyes.” John Davis needs to get over lack of a tachometer on an entry level car, for you can do without it. That Sundance would need air conditioning and automatic transmission for me. Manual transmissions suck, especially in stop and go traffic.

    • @scdevon
      @scdevon 3 роки тому

      Always complaining about lack of gauges on cheap cars was stupid. You don't need a tach on the Chrysler. That engine was built for low end torque. The 2.2 was only "buzzy" if you revved it too high which wasn't necessary. Stupid show, but entertaining today.
