An Auger to Hang String Lights? Yep.... I'm really good at making simple projects complex ;)

  • String lights? Edison Bulbs? Whatever the heck you call em'.... I'm hanging them with the help of a 40V post hole auger, some turnbuckles and a 100lbs of steel and concrete. Probably a little more complex than it needed to be..... but they do look great!
    Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions - Joe

    You'll never need to worry about cutting the wrong size, spin in circles or waste time trying to figure out what goes where... With ryan's detailed shed plans ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxb2mhCug-GkCWrq69Ce2I0nM0D4QpxAqu , it makes building sheds a breeze - just like putting lego bricks together! You'll be able to create the kind of shed, your neighbors and other woodworkers will secretly envy (while mumbling nice job under their breath).

    Joe - just a suggestion. The metal clips you are using to attach to the rafters (7:24) pull the wire pretty tight and the metal edge of those clips (while not sharp) may eventually damage the insulation on the wires after months of back and forth motion from wind. You may want to consider hanging some of those threaded links from those clips and string the lights through them like you did on the cable ends. That should help protect the insulation on the wiring better (not as 'sharp' of an edge to rub /pull against) and provide better strain relief at that end when things get windy like they do in the desert there.

    Good project and that triangular bracket was a great idea. I may use that technique. I installed a light system in my backyard a few years back and had to replace a rusted out post. I dug out the concrete and reinstalled with a sleeve so if the post rusts out again, I can slip in a new post without digging. I also sloped the concrete away from the post to keep water from puddling.

    Pretty surprised that a battery powered auger could work that well. How much of the battery did you go through digging that hole? Sometimes I use a jet nozzle of the end of the hose or a section of pipe to "dig" a hole and get the soil wetted deep, before digging the full sized hole. One of the things I like most about your vids is the creative use of hardware, such as combining the wire clamps with the carabiners. That prickly pear drink looks delicious.

    That was a cool project that turned out great! Three questions though. First, a three foot hole in the desert and didn’t hit any rocks, or did you just not show that part?
    Second, where did you plug them in? It was a super clean installation, but there has to be an extension cord somewhere. If you have some kind of super special way to hide your cords it would help me come Christmas time. ☺️
    And thirdly, were those LED bulbs? Incondescents are a pain since they’re always burning out.

      @@homesteadonomics very cool, more free iron me thinks. Was wondering how solar on camping trailer works? Like the idea panels comform to roof line rather than suspend with brackets a couple inches taller.

    I love my Ryobi Auger but I just ran into one issue that could be a real safety issue. I went to use it today and it started but wouldn't stop when I released my finger. I had to pull out the battery to stop it. I decided to open the switch mechanism and it uses a plastic part and spring that actually broke. It looks like an engineering flaw or else I would have returned it. I fixed it myself. I like the auger but I suspect that we will see a lot of broken ones and I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a recall on them for the switch.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  3 роки тому

      We’ve had 25mph winds and they didn’t have any issues. There is enough tension on the lines and this side of our house is kind of protected from our predominant wind direction. Not to say that their couldn’t be issues 🤞. But so far they’ve been doing well😀👍
