I lived there from 1982-87 loved it was so great my friend and boss bud slone is there now he is the owner of slone meats went to the Carl D Perkins job crops center best years of my life miss those days
Thank you for the tour . the only way I will ever get to see part of the world.
thanks for the kind words, Sandy, glad you enjoyed it
I’m from Kentucky love these videos.
thanks so much, Jessie
A couple of years ago I found my biological family who all come from Wayland. When visiting we've been too Prestonsburg. It is a quaint place.
Really enjoy your rides through the different towns. To think about all the residents over all the generations who haves walked the streets downtown.
it really is something to think about
We always went to Jenny Wiley when visiting grandpa Sam Preston in Salyersville.
Love All Your Videos!!!!
My dentist is from in that area. You just passed it. Back at the college.
i'll be headed to the dentist if I keep eating honey buns and milkshakes...
I live very near Prestonsburg, Ky
Thanks for showing is this beautiful town. Kentucky is a beautiful state. I have driven through it few times on our way to Gatlinburg and Chattanooga Tennessee!
Never live your past down In this town, trust me!!!!
What's with running the stop signs lol
im an outlaw, what can i say
I can no longer drive. Your videos are great. I have been looking up some of these places on the Internet. Your the best. Thank you!
I’ve heard that Prestonsburg has some of the best mountain bike trails in the area. I hope to check them out one day.
Love Prestonsburg. My Dad was from There & my Mom was from auxier. Many Great Memories.
I am a Preston and my great grandmother was an Auxier.
I love the state of Kentucky.... Thanks for this video
Bye from Como lake italy
Thank you, hope you're well in Kentucky
thank you for that video. My mama was born and raised in Martin there in Floyd Co. I live in NM and would love to see a video of that place. She grew up on Bucks Branch. My grandaddy worked on the railroad and with the coal mines. . I also remember Dewy Lake and Jenny Wiley State Park. I am 67 now but have great memories. Thanks again
Nice videos, nice towns, nice landscapes ...greetings from Morocco, North Africa .
hope things are well in Morocco, thank you!
@@realappalachia everything’s fine thank you 🙏🏻
Great tour of a beautiful area. I was through there about 15 years ago to do an event in Pikeville. It is good to see the businesses thriving there. For anyone that has not been there, you are missing a real piece of American history and beauty. Thanks for sharing your trip to there.
you're dead on , Ken, thanks for the comment
Great video! I think it looks like it has more than it would because it's the biggest town in the area it's in and everybody goes to it for things like to go to the stores from neighboring towns. Yeah I always remember the bus crash when I think about it too, one of the 4 deadliest bus crashes in U.S. history. One other one happened in Carrollton, KY and the other two happened in California.
I think you nailed it as to why it has more going on than other towns
Yeah. I think Paintsville might have more there than it's population would suggest for example too. And Pikeville too. Thanks for the reply.
My wife and her dad's family is from Prestonsburg. This was a bitter sweet video to watch. Thank you for making it.
Thank you for watching it
Thank you for this video. I enjoy all of your videos but this one was much more personal to me. My dads side of my family worked in the coal mines in and around Glouster Ohio. My moms family is from Wolfe County Ky, about 1hr west of Prestonburg on the Burt T Combs Mountain Parkway. This will be one of my favorites of your videos. So once again thank you.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it, that is awesome
That looks to be a prosperous town. Not like some of the other old coal dependent places you drive through. I wonder what they did right. Sad story about the school bus. Thanks for another good video.
thank you, I meant to mention in the video so I am glad you bring it up. Prestonsburg had a pretty long history prior to coal so it was a well-established town with an existing economy, much unlike a lot of the other coal towns in the area.
I see these sights every day!
This video thus proves that Kentucky is one of the best states I live in Prestonsburg myself, But if your looking for a great little town for a family I recommend to go and raise your kids in none other than Prestonsburg Kentucky btw WE EASTERN KENTUCKY FOLKS ARE NOT BAREFOOT CRAZY HILLBILIES SO DO NOT EVEN SAY NAH ONLY IN KENTUCKY OR STUFF LIKE THAT OKAY.
I used to look at the comics in the daily and Sunday papers, in the 50s and one of my favorite strips was LITTLE ABNER. his town was Dogpatch. I always thought that this town was a made up town or maybe in the Ozarks.
I have a west Virginia map and lo and behold just south of Logan, in Logan county, is the small town of Dogpatch!
I use this map to follow what towns that you have recently visited.
freestone
that is really cool, don't think I have been to Dogpatch yet but sounds like a good place to check out
One of the Big Sandy Community and Technical College campuses is there as well. The other three are in Paintsville, Pikeville, and Hagerhill. I was a student at the Prestonsburg campus betweem January and May of 2022 when I graduated.
The school bus crashed in to the Levisa fork river. The Big Sandy river begins near Louisa, KY, nearly 42 miles north of Prestonsburg where the Levisa fk and the Tug fk rivers converge.
Haven't been in Prestonsburg sense 86 when my grandmother passed. I have a question. Is the kidney dialysis place still there?
Love those honey buns! And Krispy Kremes are the best! As I've gotten older - have to limit myself to only one every two weeks. Kinda like bacon.
Thanks Shane
same here, I have to save them up for special occasions these days, sadly
I live in pburg with my dad and in painsville with my mom and they are both great places
spent my fair share of time in prestonsburg calling on doctors and pharmacists
I live in the bay area of California but I was born there. My mom owned a cake shop downtown lol
Prestonsburg history before 1850 was an absolute frontier town
Best thing about P-Burg is CK and Uncle Bill ballers!
My whole family on my father's side lives in that area the Goble family
Cute lil town..
I'm the father of two annoying cats, does that count? Great vid :)
you're in like Flynn lol
@@realappalachia Sweet!
Excellent video as usual Shane and show us your food. You know that I ain't but a hour or so away from most places you go.
just don't follow my lead on the diet lol
*Shane!*
Figured I'd play "program observer" on this one. Let's see if everyone can spot all these:
1:23 "The Star City of Eastern Kentucky"
3:50 96F (!!)
4:24 "Billboard Hell" on right
4:58 $2.14/gallon
5:10 "Little Suzie, don't you..."
5:54 Giovanni's Pizza Power!
6:06 SMASHBURGER!!!
7:00 (prayers...)
7:49 --unsponsored product placement--
7:55 brain f.....err, freeze. Yeah, that's it, brain FREEZE.
8:26 kudzu??
9:04 Alaskan dog in KY heat! (Is that a muumuu?)
Ah, the things you notice 2nd time through....safe travels as always, my friend.
-Ed on the Ridge
that...was...great...loved it lol. Thank you sir
are there people moving there, or can't they...?
Always enjoy these, Shane.
thanks so much, Michael
4:57 my dad works at that speedway i live there
Thanks for your videos, I'm looking for a quiet place to retire, prestonsburg looks interesting to me,
It is a nice little town
Thank you for the Great memory, of the Beauty of your Town…I hope to have the blessing, of visiting your area again …
Glad you enjoyed it, Dennis
Been to prestonberg many of Times
That was a beautiful ride, Shane. Some place I'll probably never get to see. So I live vicariously thru you! I noticed you're in a white vehicle...where's cute little Red? Hope you had a wonderful Father's Day! Stay safe & blessed!
thank you, no worries it was just an alternate car, my red corolla is alive and well :)
Is Dairy Cheer still open?
You ain't from there. What the heck
Beautiful country side, I see a white hood...did you get a new vehicle?
an alternate vehicle for the trip - my good ol' corolla is still doing most of the work
New car…truck?
alternate suv, no worries - the lovable corolla is still alive and well lol
Shane, You kind of roll through a stop sign as you speak about the tragic school bus accident! Also, you should have eaten at the pork place instead of the sugary junk food! Lol I enjoy your videos. Where was Melody? Miss her voice! I'm from Long Island. I love to see this part of the country I've never been to. Thanks for allowing me to see! Very nicely done, but don't give Melody any days off!
no worries, Melody will be in every video I can squeeze her into from now on. She is great to work with and a hard worker. This video was done before she joined me on camera, although she has worked behind the scenes for a good while.
@@realappalachia . Love you guys. I'm a fan. Love that part of the country, and the character of the people. Their soul comes out through their music. It's great that you do this. Thanks again.
Thank you for the great vid, I'm from a little town not too far away, West Liberty in Morgan County. It's claim to fame is the Sorghum Festival plus almost being wiped off the map when a tornado tore through downtown
a few years back. They're working on a comeback but it's been a slow process. It's a great little town in a great area. Thank you again. Hope maybe you can do a video on West Liberty someday. Many blessings for all you do to entertain and educate us.😊👍
Happy Father's day Shane!
thank you so much
Another Great Video ! Thanks for sharing this gem of a town. What model camera are you using? It is doing a great job and I am in the market to replace my current camera. :)
I mix it up depending on a lot of different factors but I usually have been using a go pro hero 9, it does pretty well except it doesn't zoom very well. I might be in the market for another camera myself.
@@realappalachia I agree on GoPro9, that seems to be the major drawback on it and the other is the 'Bending' that takes place on the wide angle setting. Thanks for your reply!
Prayers
my grandfathers home town and an awesome place
i loved it there too
That is a very pretty small town, haven't been over that way in years, town is not run down like many of our WV small towns.
We used to have an Ace Hardware as well here in my small North Carolina town, but sadly Lowes took them out of business. Not so small now. I've seen a rural town from the 80's become a pretty big city with strip malls and fast food restaurants everywhere in the 2000's. Anyhow, great video. I hope to travel that way soon.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful family and beautiful wife I wish I can find a genuine girl like her ✨👍🤠
Thanks for the tour. My mom grew up in this area in a coal camp called Glo.
I've been checking your channel out good stuff . Something I've noticed though is a lack of any footage from Martin County Kentucky. Might want to give it a look before the seasons change.
Thanks for the kind words. Hope we can get to Martin County someday, our schedules are insane right now
Were your home town
Richlands, Virginia
Shane and Melody, I love your channel and all the wonderful content that you have on here. I was wondering if you could do a more detailed history and tribute to the 1958 Floyd County Bus Crash near Prestonsburg, KY. The 64th anniversary is coming up next week and it would be nice to see a proper and respectful tribute to all the folks that were lost in that tragic event. Thank you for your consideration.
thanks for the kind words, i am not sure we have enough time to put something together to do that story justice but it is a very important story to be sure.
just horrible ive seen alot of photos i was born and raised in floyd county starting in 75 but everyone knows about the wreck, my father was 9 when it happened , some stories ive heard really just to sad talk about
Beautiful place. Thanks 😊 P.S. do the planetarium in the future, I love those.
i never seem to be there when it is open, can't wait to check it out
Thanks you my friend see you soon
Have a nice day
Great video with beautiful scenery! Thank you for the tour - Best Wishes!
thank you so much, sierra
Thanks for another excellent video, Shane
thanks for watching and the kind words
My dad grew up around there during the great depression. He told me some harrowing tales of life there during that time. Never been there so Im gald someone took the time to video this. Hes been gone since 1997. I just imagine my ole man walking the streets with his old beat up banjo. Thank you!
i dont know him, i dont think but i could picture that used to be alot of pickers here but time has took alot of them and like my kids generation if they cant do it on a phone there not gonna do it!!times sure have changed and honestly i dont like it but as my ex would say ! its not my world !! lol
@@brianpinion5844 My dad played banjo in the most unusual way. Us kids who could play guitar had a hard time with his melodies because they really had no organization. The chorus changes would have the best players scratching their heads. I called it "True Appliachian Style"He picked this style up somewhere back in the hills of Kentucky or on the streets of Prestonsburg.I miss hearing him plucking away on the porch.
I ❤ Tom T. Hall!!!!
My dad was 25 when that bus crash happened he lived in Allen about 5miles from where it happened. Ty for the ride alone
Shew, I'm sure he never forgot the day that happened. Thanks for watching
I lost two cousins in that bus accident
@@timgoble9891 I'm very sorry to hear that
Thanks for sharing this video.
Thanks for watching!
Happy Father's Day Shane!
thank you so much
Great video as always
thank you, glad you enjoyed
Past always follows one In prestonsburg!!
You did not make full stop at the stop sign
might explain why i have had 16 traffic tickets in my life
