The Costco grocery order was more expensive, but it was also immediately, visually obvious that they provided twice as much tomato as Sam's Club did. Now I'm curious what other quantity differences were present, and how that would have ended up affecting the price per burger vs the overall bill.

If you are on a tight budget, yes, shop at SAM'S. That 23% difference is not pocket change.
But what the 23% extra at Costco goes for is: treating their workers like human beings. Sam's Club pays employees an average of about $17.50 per hour, and between 20-50 percent of its employees quit each year for various reasons. Costco, however, pays employees an average of $19.50 per hour (both stats from the state I live in, the pay in your state may vary) and replaces between 6-20 percent of its employees each year.
ALL Costco employees are eligible for health insurance, including full-time and part-time (after a specific period of employment). Health benefits at Costco include medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage. While Sam's Club does offer health insurance, it's only available full-time employees.
Both companies offer a 401(k) plan with an employer match.
No shame in sticking to a budget in tight times. But if you are lucky enough (like we finally are in our house) to be able to share the wealth, that is just as valid an option.

Hold your hands around the romaine and firmly smack the core end against the table. It will separate out the core and you can pull it out in one go. Helps when you want to cut or shred a bunch of romaine without breaking it all apart :)

My teacher coworkers that used to work at Costco in high school/college are the only people who willingly kept their jobs there as they became teachers and are (relatively) happy with doing two jobs. Not only is the money useful because teaching in the US in a city is an absolute joke, but they really liked the benefits and the respect they have there. I fully anticipate them to eventually quit teaching and just do Costco 😂

Interesting that Josh talks about "nutty crunchiness" of shredduce. Due to some rumbly tummy issues, I eat very slowly. I've recently given up on shredduce in all forms because once my food cools, the shredduce tastes like stale peanut butter, especially on burgers and grilled chicken sandwiches. I still like whole leaf lettuce on things, but shredduce completely ruins the meal for me now.
