- Episode 11. A brutal early 90s album. Join me for this listen to an album that is said to define a genre. And... is it worth the extra money to hear it on vinyl? You tell me!!!
One of the best death metal bands ever!
You should check out Morbid Angel 'covenant'. It was the best selling death metal album of all time.
Agreed (from my limited knowledge!).
Covenant? Will do. :-)
The Mercurial Number Six thank-you 😀
Done.
Blessed Are The Sick is the album that may have started 100,000 death metal bands after this.
I envy you hearing this masterwork for the first time.
Agreed... and I have so many more to experience!
"This is not going to be nice..."
Best preview ever
Funny thing about a lot of "double-bass" drumming... it's done with a single kick technique, especially when talking about Pete Sandoval
19:30 :It's strangely less heavy than I thought it would be"
19:45 kick into Day of Suffering
LOL
My favorite Morbid Angel album...
I've only listened to three albums so far. Liked all of them. A lot of really decent stuff!
The Mercurial Number Six Abominations of Desolation, Covenant, and Domination are highlights outside of Blessed are the Sick
Loved Covenant!
Torn between Covenant and Domination myself, although you cant really go wrong with MA... unless you open up Kingdoms Disdained, which is a hot mess.
Actually, would be interested in a Mercurial review of Illum Divinus Insanus, just for a fresh perspective.
@@toddwilliams8128 a lot of people hate on Domination idk why
I grew up in Tampa. We loved the English bands too. Love Paradise Lost! Napalm Death made Harmony Corruption at Morris Sound. I think the label pushed them into it. I still love all the bands I heard on the Grindcrusher EP. The music scene there was kind and generous to me.
"The fiends encircle me
They speak my name in tongues!"
💀🤘
Had to stop the video when I heard this....
"This isn't going to be nice....This is going to hurt"
LMFAO.
How did he know!?
+Immortal Disciple Ha ha! :-)
Back in late '91 I asked my new budy who had this in CD "are they hard" and he replied "they are the hardest".
Due to these 2 reviews of Morbid Angel, I decided to buy these new editions, although I already have those of the first press.
Thanks again! Besides, I had so much fun with your reactions!
The cover art is 'The Treasures of Satan' by Belgian painter Jean Delville,
closely associated w/ the Martinist Order Unknown Philosophers' avant-garde Salons de la Rose + Croix of Joséphine Péladon and later w/ the Theosophical Society of Madame Helena Petrovna Blavatsky.
The craziest reaction I've ever seen on UA-cam LOL
Sorry! :-D
my first morbid angel album i heard in 1992. then i heard altars. good shit....
Fantastic band. Some of the best music I've listened to recently. Can't believe I didn't appreciate them in their heyday!
Something id give a ten to, Cryptopsy- None So Vile
itd be fun to see your review of that
+Sokol88 I'll look into it. Cheers! :-)
This is easy listening music compared to None So Vile LOL. Not a criticism - its fantastic easy listening music mind you, but one minute into None So Vile and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about LMAO
Yes dude, that artwork was used on "A Tribute To Insanity" by Hexenhaus in 1988,which is a technical thrash metal band,it's one of my favorite albums, you should check it out
dethmetalguy \m/ explains why it looked so familiar. I had only listened to Altars of Madness before so I wasn't familiar with Blessed are the sick (until today, not this video, though)
We had a great Grindcore/Death Metal scene in England. Napalm Death, Carcass, Bolt Thrower, Benediction and a few more.
One of the best death metal albums ever made!!
This was cool . I forgot how good this album is.
It's bloody great!
Glad to hear!
Morbid Angel is one of the best man. Check out their 1st album Altars of Madness!
I really like this album. Looking forward to listening to it again with a few beers!
Little help, from left to right, Pete sandoval: drums, Trey Azagthoth: lead guitar, David vincent: vocals, bass and Richard Brunelle: guitars
:-)
Very cool! The most funniest and mad review i ever seen!
+Luís Fernando Valença Barroso Cheers! :-)
I'm impressed at how quickly you adapted to the vocal rhythm when reading the lyrics!
+John Boothman Cheers! :-)
Hi!
I suggest you review the 1995 domination album and also the Altars of Madness from 1989 which was re-released on FDR, too. Only Domination has been released on FDR.
Formulas fatal to the flesh (morbid angel) was probably what you were expecting when looking at the album cover. Now that album is fast.
Morbidxone Q I'll check it out.
Bought it when it came out. Messed me up permanently. There’s nothing like it.
Immolation - Dawn of Possession
You’ll appreciate it my mercenary 🤘
🤜🤛
I am dying man.The damn best review ever.I am from that era and I am total in Metal. And you man, did the best review ever.Yes, we metalheads love funny people.Go on man...Cheers
+blseddie Thanks for the enthusiasm! I knew there had to be a fan out there somewhere!!! :-)
Haha.Absolutely.I enjoyed the whole review last night.
Great video. Sometimes one finds gems on UA-cam. This is one. It beats other reaction videos by far by being genuine. Btw, I like the Piece of Mind, McBrain references as a huge Maiden fan. It was the first album I ever bought by them back in 1983. I still remember the scent of the gatefold sleeve.
I love that album cover!
Morbid Angel is my favorite band of all time. Blessed is my 2nd favorite album from them. This video/your thoughts on it had me dying laughing.
Cheers mate! :-)
Sick video my mercenary 🤘
man you were into it. Very entertaining to watch. Thumbs up
I was 19 years old when this album was released. I had a roommate and I broke his arm in a mosh pit in my bedroom listening to the first song on side two when it kicks into the heavy part..... As far as death metal goes and extreme music this album absolutely changed my life and making it more musically accessible to my ears. Something about Treys guitar solos traded off with Eric just made this album absolutely the heaviest thing I had ever heard even putting cannibal corpse and death under the shelf compared to something like this. In my opinion this is one of the top five best death metal albums ever made
Very interesting way of reviewing an album, very very entertaining. Good job!
Cheers mate! :-)
I was still watching this vidéo when i had a notification from you liking my comment. I feel like i'm spied on. Or maybe i'm just high.
As someone who has listened to Morbid Angel my whole life thanks to my brother, this was a treat, you seemed to be enjoying it atleast from what I could tell. Cheers mate! Had a laugh
Also the talk around 16:00 about being the nicest people you'll meet, Totally agree. Glad you have the same point of view.
+Acid Fuzz Great album! People should understand that this music is fun!
And now you're with a pipe. Brilliant. Love it.
Mr. . Merc. . put the album cover on your head and then head an then proceeded to headbang was the moment you earned my
subscription !!!! You are geeky, kinda know your shit mildly, AND you call us "your Mercinaries" and Yes I will join you for side two!!!!!
I would love to know why you call us that ??? I could watch you 4 extended periods of time INDEED !!!!!!!!!! Keep It Up !!!! Mr. Blast Beats !!!!!!!!!
This album was made for killers. and thats what we were, back in the day.
you did mentioning Cannibal Corpse and Napalm Death recorded their album in Florida. Well, many band recorded their album in Morrisound Studio in Florida. At that time, that studio is the only studio that can record and produce a death metal sound. well, i dont know much about the process of recording... but, in my observation i can compared each bands album sounds like. Take Master - On The Seventh Day God Created... Master AND Hellwitch - Syzygial Miscreancy album and compare it with other band like Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Napalm Death, Morbid Angel and Terrorizer and others album. Naaahh... i just enjoy this video haha!
Starts headbanging - wait, gotta get sommore of that cuppa - headbanging resumed
ALLLRIGHHHTTY !!!!! Then Mr. Mercurial Number Six !!!! You ARE NOW 100% my all time forever my FAVORITE--EST album
Revue -- er !!!!!!!!! when y
Bought this on cassette, when it was a brand new release back in the late 80's (at least I think it was then, my brain is fading, lol), this defines Death Metal, varying speeds, and quick changes, and blasting drums, insane riffing, insane vocals and lyrics. Still one of the best Death Metal albums of all time, along with Pestilence Testimony of the Ancients. Enfuckingjoy!
I definitely didn't expect this. Yes, that machine gun snare beat is blast beat. I'm no expert on Morbid Angel, but Obituary guitarist played (or still play) strats. Yes ND were on that label for many years.
Let me provide you with my understanding of difference between death metal and grind core.
-Death metal is kind of evolution of Hell Awaits / Reign In Blood, but with less edge, lower tuned and more agony-esk. Slayer is deadly, while death metal is the thing between getting killed and being dead. Picture of dying.
-Grindcore on other hand evelved from punk through hardcore punk. I mean there's punk influence in Slayer, but that doesn't make Slayer grindcore. Grindcore skipped the metal part sort of, just went for the most insane sickest possible. Without the technicality of death metal.
But these genres crossbreed very often even within catalogue of single band. ND Harmony Corruption (89) is for example praticaly deathmetal album, compared their other offerings.
If you put melodic vocals over that, you'll get melodic death metal, which also exist.
In heaviness... that's hard question. IMO Slayer is the hardest band I've ever heard, the most "threatening", "knife to your neck" sort of thing. It's not easy to describe, but heaviest... man I don't know. First Carcass? Entombed- Left hand path? Sepultura - Roots? First or second Napalm Death? some Suffocation, Kataklysm, Cannibal corpse? maybe something more recent, like Whitechappel?
+ExplosiveNotes Good history! Cheers. Hopefully this will help others who stumble upon this video.
Or someone will want to crucify me due to disagreement on some details :D We'll see
ExplosiveNotes No, I really appreciate it. I'm not sure this video has gone down too well... but I enjoyed this album. I think heavy bands often display extreme talent.
M6 I wasn't talking about you crucifying me. I'll explain... eventualy.
Explanation: I was alluding to the fact we're on the internet and human stupidity is spread independently of musical styles, therefore there's possibility of someone wanting, for example argue to death that Reign in Blood isn't related to death metal at all. I mean argue in very "unproductive" fashion. But it supposed to be primarly joke/funny and it didn't work. No big deal :)
tky to support David ! (I never heard variety too short ) don't be angry
Classic death metal record, I enjoyed your review to it.
The previous album "Altars of Madness" is even better!
+barfyman362 :-) I like the way each album starts with the next letter of the alphabet!
I Can't believe you uphold the precious Java Bean IN high Esteem !!!! Coffee Best Drink Ever !!!!! Yours truly, your mercinary !!!
Over and Out !!!!!
Ha ha! Know my shit mildly! Brilliant! Thanks for watching. Always appreciated! :-)
Trey is a fan on Dead Can Dance. The thanks lists are an amusing read!
Tampa was one of those places for Death metal in the 90's.
Brutal BRUTAL ALBUM
You should do this with the Never Say Die album from Black Sabbath.
That's an interesting idea!
I think you’d love ‘Carrion Crawler/ The Dream’ by thee oh sees. Raw and electrifying psych/garage/punk thing
You rule. Morbid Angel rules. Did you do Kingdoms Disdained yet?
Not yet.
@@mercurialno6 well you're hella funny and I enjoyed your Morbid Angel videos. This happens to be my favorite band...
Fantastic band. :-)
A classic
Agreed.
Definitely not a Telecaster, hahahaha
Not really my taste in music. What turntable do you use?? Check out Old Locomotive by The Murlocs, Ambrose from King Gizz is in the band.
It's a Rega. Not sure of the model number right now.
Best ma album and one of the top 3 in the genre, definitely better than covenant and altars, not even close
You really need to do Vio-lence - Eternal Nightmare. I think you'll be pleased. But I gotta warn ya.....you might just get possessed and thrash everything in sight.
This guy has definitely killed someone.
Not yet...
The Mercurial Number Six lol
Dude. How much coffee do you drink?
+Samuel Saarinen A lot.
The Mercurial Number Six I LOVE this album one of my favorites, this review was freaking hilarious keep it up you're one energetic son of a bitch 😁
I would see them on the heavyness level around 7 like you do.Heavy Musik never comes from speed.
Love Morbid Angel! I like the Steve Tucker albums the best!
Justin Which is your favourite?
Try Formulas Fatal To The Flesh, arguably my favorite MA's album...
Cool.
@@sergiodavila65 Formulas!
My favourite death metal album hands down.
what is your job
100% agree
Hilarious, funniest review ever of a morbid angel album . Why not review Meshuggah "the violent sleep of reason" you ll love it
+Devon Rascal Do you know what? I've never, ever heard them! But I've read that they have an amazing drummer? You're right... I should give them a go!
A Strong 9* on the clock Mt.Merc. and am 8 on the heaviness scale mr.Merc.
I don't think it's useful to view heaviness as a sort of competition where there are established highs and lows, it's more like an aesthetic quality that can be applied in different ways without necessarily being "less" or "more." For example you can compare a drone doom band and a modern technical death metal band, they couldn't be more different in terms of how they achieve heaviness (the former from being glacially slow and vast, the latter from being oppressively dense and blisteringly fast) and yet they both sit pretty high up anyone's tier list of "heavy music." Then you have something like Orthrelm's Ov, which is both more droning than many drone albums (which normally at least have more frequent textural variations) and leaves less room to breathe than many tech death albums... and yet while it's probably undeniably "heavy music" to me it more so sounds very bright and alien. So does it end up higher on the list than the others due to being more extreme or lower on the list due to being less "dark" in tone? The answer, which anyone remembering the start of this paragraph can guess, is that they aren't truly in competition at all and are all just different expressions of a concept.
So to answer the "how heavy is Morbid Angel" question, they aren't the most extreme band (and weren't even back in the day) but they do a very good job of using the aesthetic of heaviness to paint a very dark and engaging picture. In my mind that makes it as valid to call them a "heavy band" as any other, even as people try to push the boundaries of music further and further.
Yes, I understand where you're coming from. For me it's more a nostalgia thing. I remember certain bands as being 'heavy' yet time has mellowed their impact. No surprise really. I'll probably do some more old school heavy bands for that same reason. I think there's so much variation in what makes music 'feel' heavy. 'Heavy' can be just a voice and an acoustic guitar. Thanks for watching!
I feel you, the way we experience things definitely changes with time and new experiences. Thanks for video... ing!
I've been listening to this album since it was released and it is surely a classic. No-one sounded like this at the time. Technical and so easy to listen to. The lyrics are fantastic. And this record does sound like it's been enhanced compared to the original record. The lyrics in Day Of Suffering sounds like it's saying 'Christ! Gonna kick your ass!' instead of the printed 'Prize a call to take your hand'. Thank you lists were like and how we got into other bands that they liked at the time. As this music has been demystified since the dawn of the internet age ejits like yerselves twitch and discouragingly mewl about it's lack of depth and compensate in an act to disguise your normalcy. You are jaded and kinda soulless in you're projection here. You should spend time enjoying phoney phonecalls for your entertainment instead.
+Legwich Boat Yes... fantastic album. I need to have another listen with a few beers and no talking!
I remember there were some folks slabbering a year or so after it was released that it was so catchy and accessible to be likened to a pop record. In fact I heard someone say they were the Kylie of death metal. That perspective is bullshit to me though. It goes with the whole it must be faster, heavier than thou expected at all times attitude. This I find is disrespectful as I would never consider a record like 'Blessed Are The Sick' a novelty. And most of the people who'd say shit like that were just 'scenesters' for want of a better description.
What a shame. My first reply was before your edit. You hadn't called me an idiot at that point and I thought I was agreeing with your general sentiment. More fool me! Ha ha!
I am not listening to this album 'then'... I am listening to it 'now'. My point was that I am 'now' surprised at how 'light' this 'death metal' is. Was. It is not a negative. It is just a sign of the times. Everything that starts as frightening ends up becoming the norm. I listened to some early Napalm death the other day and it sounded like music. It absolutely did NOT sound like music to my ears in the eighties. It is simply the evolution of music. What at first sounds 'new' eventually sounds 'stock' (I can imagine Lars saying that in Some Kind of Monster). That was my point here. People should not be put off listening to music just because they fear it will be too heavy/experimental/whatever. Sometimes the band name alone is enough to frighten a person.
I have only listened to two Morbid Angel albums but, overall, I think I preferred Covenant. Superb album. Who the fuck are you to talk to me about compensation? And who the hell are you to tell me I'm soulless. I like this band. Get over yourself. Such a shame. You people are living up to the worst stereotypes. Judging me? You don't know me. I have the ability to enjoy a wealth of music. And I have the ability to be honest about it. I can pick fault in music that I like. Even music that I love. I don't feel the need to be territorial about it. Holy shit. There is nothing wrong with me expressing an opinion. You obviously feel fucking entitled to express yours. I thought this album was good and I thought Covenant was excellent. What more do you want? Holy fuck?!? You're the fucking scenester.
Ha ha. Well I stuck around for the whole album. Eejit is better than idiot.
Agreed. Eejit is better than idiot. Love Father Ted. Thanks for watching anyway. You should give my Covenant video a go. I hope you'll see that although I do try and inject humour... I am genuinely enthusiastic about this band. If we never meet again... well, hell, at least we had an interesting exchange! Have a nice life. I mean it. :-)
You should do a video of napalm death harmony corruption
3:56 Who is that? The joke totally went over my head lol.
Wasn't a joke. She's just the presenter of the quiz show, Only Connect.
Ah, thank you!
Listen to Death Live in L.A!
+Keven Burnett Will do. Cheers. :-)
I'm french learned English on this !
43:33 I'll Wait. Van Halen! Drum Fill.
lol where did you get your information from? "an album that is said to define a genre" the album before this Altars of Madness was way more influential and genre defining
+Mark Firestorm That's really laugh out loud funny?
people really take a "lol" that literally?
+Mark Firestorm Yep. I pictured you guffawing!
The album was probably sold to me with those statements. Now that I've heard Covenant I'd probably hold that up as a better 'genre-defining' album, what with the TV play and massive sales. But you do realise that I know nothing about this band... hence 'first impression'?
There's always someone who will say Kill 'em All did it before Master of Puppets. But thanks for watching! :-)

Were you born in the early 80s like me?
if you listen to morbid angel almost sleeping sounds real scary
makes my laught ! good!😁
Funny you mentioned it sounding like a kids cartoon at 43:50. I’ve always referred that riff to the diplodos-riff.
m.ua-cam.com/video/UvRpYiOYxYk/v-deo.html 0:39 in.
Great review! :D
Cheers! I've never seen that cartoon before in my life!
it's six past fuck and I'm going to the tabacshop by a couple of beer !tky 😂
my god listen to formulas fatal to the flesh that album will make you hard
But let me know if you don't want that record I'll definitely take it
There's more than one type of heavy though.
Heavy production? Domination is their 10 for heavy production, Blessed is a 6.5
Heavy spirit? Blessed (and Morbid Angel in general) is more of a Black spirit than Heavy, this album a 7
Heavy music? When the production is not on the heavy side it can skew what a person views as heavy. If this album had Domination production one wouldn't bring up the question of it being heavy. The groove and chug of this albums is heavy. 9
That band actually cut themselves before shows so they’d come out bleeding to express their spirituality. No kidding.
Nonsense
Why do you look like Ray Park?
Please do more obscure music reviews.
I will try. Thank you! :-)
I just ran into this by accident, but morbid Angel is my favorite band, and you're a fucking wacko, lmao... That's a good thing man...hahaha
A copy of ‘forest of equilibrium’ for you fella.
I'm Charlie
Mr Sandoval is the first from left.
No he's not. He's all the way left. Trey is first from left.
@@redgreenblue12356 Trey is second ;)
Not my cup or char, this lot, but if it helps keep people off the streets, then have at it.
fishy paw Well... it kept me off the streets for a good 40 minutes.
satan is here
Even back in the days they didn't sound heavy to me at all.Was like to proggy combiened with blast beats. There are many bands older than them and they sounded thousand times more brutal and heavy long before Morbid Angel.
Gatefold!!! People dressed in shirts and tie with short hair are croutons... Trey Azimov... Earache my eye... No to He-man, Master of the Universe, yes to She-ra, Princess of Power!!! Did you know that with as much jumping and flying around that She-Ra did, there is only one episode that you can see She-Ra's panties (they're white)... Steven Tyler probably wears white panties too... Britney Spears doesn't wear panties...
+Evilwhiteclownpunk Yep, Britney Spears definitely doesn't wear panties!
Not sure it's even worth listening to on UA-cam, I'm afraid, Seis. I'm more a King DIamond man, you know. I really don't like that daft clearing the throat style of vocals. Unless it's Joe Cocker, natch.
+Pádraig Floyd I love it. But it's nostalgic for me. And I liked Kellogg's Variety packs. A little bit of what I fancy. Definitely not for everyone (anyone?) though!!!
No, never a fan of Variety Packs. All rather the same and the cardboard had more taste.
+Pádraig Floyd Ha ha! I suppose! I was a huge fan of things that were bad for me. Tony the Tiger held the number one position! Now it's decaff and almond milk. And bottled water.
Why bottled water? What's wrong with tap water? Or filtered?
Pádraig Floyd I don't do tap water. I need to fool my brain into thinking I'm drinking something special! This is to make up for the hole left by my beloved Cola. I have been soft drink free for coming up to a year. Don't mind filtered water. Or just really cold water. But I still like a bit of fizz!!!
First impression, what a load of 💩🙉
+Simon Bradbury Ha ha! You're not a fan then?
Simon, this is because you have no taste. MA are one of the all time greatest Death Metal bands. I think more likely the case is that you do not like Death Metal itself as a genre.
+Simon Bradbury
My first impression of you was that you're an idiot. Then I checked out your channel, and saw that you're a guy with a lot of guitars who will never have the capacity to contribute even a fraction of what Trey Azagthoth has given to music.
Trey wasn't just a great guitarist, he completely reworked the idea of how an electric guitar could be played.
ua-cam.com/video/pyNIyUzye3g/v-deo.html
This is a guy covering Morbid Angel solos. Forget about the fact that it's all beyond your skill level, music isn't a competition. Just focus on the fact that you'll never be that creative, and no-one in your record collection will ever be that creative.
Final impression - you're an idiot.
