Just personal experience with training fasted. If grappling I tend to have around 30 minuets in the gas tank. After that I have to take 10-15 minuets to let the body restore energy.. after the 10-15 minuets Mark I’m good to go a fast pace again. Still seems to flag around the 30 minuet point. Mostly I fast on heavier lifting days now. The longer rest between sets still lets me lift at a normal pace

Hi Coach. No need to apologize to us for being away. We are grateful for the information you give and your willingness to share with us. Missed the live-stream but perhaps you have time to answer one more question. Have you ever encountered a student or athlete who seemed to be prone to connective tissue injuries such as chronic ankle or wrist sprains, and if so do you have a strategy to overcome the problem?

One more thing Mr. Zahabi, when you fast, OMAD, drink some bone broth. Whole Foods sells quality bone broth.
The collagen protein is important for fasting.

I would suggest the following: (1) Create a slightly more professional looking setup. It looks less like an off-the-cuff chat and more like a serious show that way. (2) Get the show on a regular schedule, which is clearly articulated, and give it a name. “Ask me Anything 27” isn’t terrible, but I would recommend something simpler like The Firas Zahabi Show: (followed either by the date or episode number). And if there will be different types of episodes, go with The Firas Zahabi Show: Ask me Anything #27; or The Firas Zahabi Show: Weekend Conversation #3. (3) I also would not use the title “Coach” if you’re intention is to make the show wider reaching than that. The use of the term makes it look like this is just a training chat. Personally I was late to come to this channel for all of the reasons I listed. You can hit a tipping point quite rapidly on UA-cam, and I really believe this channel could explode if handled properly.

It's possible the black coffee (which I assume you're drinking in the morning) is starting your circadian clock and thus breaking the fast which stops the production of certain hormones/functions in the body, maybe this is contributing to your cardio issue? I think some people find better results with 1 meal a day/23-24hr fast when they consume nothing except water outside of their brief feeding window, aka no calories or anything that starts the clock. Rhonda Patrick has discussed a lot as of late the difference between the Circadian clock and a Intermittent fast, but I'm not sure what exactly the difference is and how much the black coffee really does or doesn't effect thing, just a thought!

    Amazing podcast!
I’ve done a lot of fasting in my teenage years, for detox, deep body cleanse etc, following the advice of russian biologist Michail Tombak, who’s been quite known in Russia and eastern europe for last few decades. According to him, it can be done for up to 40 days but you’re not supposed to exercise while fasting. Peace.

The first publishing about fasting as a cure was done in 1931 in Yugoslavia by Alexi Suvorin, who was famously curing “incurable” patients. He was Russian but was forbidden to practice in Russia in those times and finally forced to emigrate to Yugoslavia. His student N Sutkov stayed and tried to continue Suvorin’s practice in Russia but was soon arrested and executed without a trial. Suvorin did a lot of amazing things with his method but it’s difficult to find anything online in English about this. The main point is what you briefly mentioned, that at the certain stage, the body starts to digest it’s own cells and the first ones to go are any “faulty” cells. That’s why it is supposed to be so effective with a cancer etc. I believe there are still some PDFs in Spanish available to download but nothing in English.

Re: Podcast Time. I don’t think 2-3 hours is necessary. There is value in doing a deep dive on a topic, and that can take a long time especially when you have a guest. But for a one-man show, with a host who doesn’t babble or ramble (which you don’t), I think one hour or ninety minutes might be the sweet spot. Ben Shapiro for example does a one hour political talk show daily. He talks fast, he hits each topic efficiently and then moves on, and an hour is plenty. Particularly with what you’ve said about your schedule, I think you’ll hit diminishing returns if you go much longer than 60-90 minutes. I strongly recommend making UA-cam a priority, but that doesn’t necessarily mean long shows.

How big is your 1 meal? What's your caloric intake and macros breakdown for that? Anyone can lose weight in a caloric deficit. You're probably not getting enough protein to maintain what muscle you have. Even with consuming BCAAs trying to preserve your muscle. So you'll lose weight but muscle as well. Also, being so low in calories for too long can cause metabolic damage.

Hey Coach Firas I am curious about what you discussed with Joe Rogan on his podcast about training, but not being sore. Was this how Bruce Lee trained? Did he focus on volume other than high intensity? I have read so much about Bruce Lee's training methods and know he constantly worked out, but I have no clue how he did so much everyday. If anyone can help me I am all ears. Thank you for reading.

Firas, what is your post-workout refeed meal like? Can you give us a breakdown of what you eat in your 1 meal after fasting? How do you manage to hit your protein needs which I suspect must be around 120g on the low end? You say your cardio is hurting and suspect lack of carbohydrates to be the culprit - are you replenishing your glycogen stores properly? I can imagine it being super hard to hit all your protein, carb and fat needs in just 1 meal, let alone all the micronutrients, unless you have a separate stomach for the greens :)
I am asking because I have been doing intermittent fasting for a couple of years now with one or two high protein, high fat, low carb snacks close to my bjj/striking/weight training in the evening and a big, low fat high carb post workout. This is the regimen that gives me just enough energy for the training sessions and enough freedom during the day because the snacks are quick easy to prepare and can be consumed while working. Try it out or something similar if you feel like your energy has dropped down ;)

Fernando is wrong, Fung is right. Fasting for 48-hours actually speeds up the metabolism by 3-14%! Now, fasting for longer than 7 days will definitely lower your metabolic rate and protein demands. That’s the point where your body literally goes into conservation mode and wants to maintain as much energy as it can. It's all about duration. The human body evolved to go without food for many hours or even days, it's only after extend, unusual/un-natural amounts of time that these stresses kick in that Fernando refers to. I IF and am in the best health of my life, but if you don't believe me just take a look around... about 40% of US adults are clinically obese and should have fast metabolisms from eating 3 meals a day with snacks in-between!!!

Hey Coach Zahabi really enjoyed this talk. I have a question. I have been "slow bulking" for the last few years eating around 2.5k -3.5k calories every day slowly getting bigger (I am still very lean). How do you reconcile the need to bulk with fasting? I really want the health benefits of fasting but I know that if I start fasting I will lose all my weight. Should I just get as bulky as I can really fast and then start fasting?

Try Keto diet, then your body doesnt need glucose for the high intensity cardio because it's running on fat. First few weeks of keto + one meal a day I lost a fair amount of my upper end strength/endurance, but once I was fully adapted I was back to how strong I was on rice+chicken+brocoli

Firas's belief system about fasting isn't helping how he feels during his workouts. He believes that he NEEDS glycogen through carbs to replenish his muscles. So when he doesn't get that, he is expecting to be low energy. Placebo is a very real thing, even for the most intelligent among us. What you believe, you feel.

I can’t encourage Firas more strongly to make a major effort to establish himself in this UA-cam/podcasting space. Right now that space is being dominated by people who simply aren’t that bright. No offense intended to folks like Dave Rubin and Joe Rogan. They are intellectually curious guys who run a professionally produced show and attract fantastic guests. But neither is a true scholar in my view, and neither is capable of engaging big ideas in a meaningful way-instead they either serve as a conduit for those ideas, as Dave tends to do, or they can subject them to fairly unsophisticated pushback like Joe often does. Firas has a greater breadth of knowledge, and frankly he just has a bit more cognitive upside. It’s still early days for internet-based talk shows, and the current kings of the industry are akin to Miguel Torres and Mike Brown. It’s time for GSP and Anderson Silva. Firas can be one of those guys in my opinion. MMA is a cool sport, but there’s a lot more to the world out there. It would be great to see Jordan come on the show, for example. Let’s blow this up!

Maybe try to put a timer of 10mins by question, make a plan and answer simply to the question, you can touch a more variability of question with a lot more attention ! Great job by the way, no doubt you're one of the best trainer in mma (top1 i think), would be interesting knowing your opinion on duane ludwig striking method ?

someone needs to tell antonio that eating food is by far the most stress the human body does in a life time. like anything you need to find a sweet spot and what works for you and your life style and goals. end of discussion.

Coach, Olivier needs to shave his mustache, it grows by leeching off his strength.
Just curious coach, you don't have to answer if this is personal. In one of your Instagram posts you refer to Melisa your wife as the mother of your three children. In one of your previous videos there was a user who asked you to adopt him, and you said you already have four kids and not up for the fifth. So do you have three or four kids?

    Diet is divisive like politics.
My neighborhood in Queens NY is mostly Jewish and heart disease and t2d are out of control. Obesity common. But they don't eat bacon/pork. Look at Netta. American dietary advice against eating pork is bullsh`t.
You are not supposed to do OMAD every day. Maybe do it for two day,s then do 2 meals a day for two days, then OMAD again.

Could you have posters of your sponsors on your back wall instead of being inserted in the video? It's a tad bit distracting.
