Not first, but first-time commenter. Been watching 2(?) years now and I have started my own pre-bonsai shelf (with several bushes/trees). Enjoy your vids and watching you as you work. Thank you!
It is true therapy for me to view Nigel talking and hear the sincere love he seems to have for his trees. I always loved plants and especially trees so I would guess we have some in common there. I also like to view other bonsai enthusiast/experts but Nigel is by far the most down to earth and fun one . Also he don't use wire really which is how I do on my own "pseudo bonsai" as I call them. Mine are at best pre bonsai but I am doing my things and pick up what I like and have no prestige on doing always the right thing. Take care Nigel and all other viewers and I/we look forward to your next update :D
Hi Nigel! Here in Brazil, bougainvilleas are know to flower on times of drought. Prople often stop watering these trees for two to three weeks during summer, so they will flower and better mimic nature.
Thank you for putting the black background up. It really helps. I’ve been growing my bougainvillea for several years and it’s time to get a little more serious on it’s shaping now.
That tree is beautiful! When you said what size it should be, I said out loud "Nope, 10 inches for sure!" I was right! And hubby looked over my shoulder and exclaimed "Hey! You're checking out another man's wood?!" ... Yes, yes I am, and it's 10 inches tall. Nigel has nice wood... O.O Highlight of my week amidst the news of the first confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Thunder Bay. Thanks Nigel! Be safe.
Really appreciate your videos and soothing instructional style. Turning to bonsai during these challenging times. Greetings from the Pacific Northwest.

I cleaned up the moss off one of my trees with a toothbrush and tweezers.... and all I can think of was, “Dang, Nigel has so much patience.” But I did get it done, phew!!
Luv this tree. Makes my day every time I get to see a video with it in. One day I'll find one that isn't crazy priced to put in my collection. Thanks again for another great video Nigel
Love your work on this bonsai. It is looking good. Could certainly 'hold its own' in a competition here in s. FL. Looks as good as many of our bonsai bougainvilleas down here. Well done!
Thank you Pat, a nice compliment coming from Florida! It is difficult growing tropical trees in our climate, but I always think, there is always a worse place in the world somewhere!
I just simply love this tree, sadly I really don't have space for tropical trees. So I only use local trees, so I can keep 'm outside on my small balcony. Seems to me you have a similar climate. I am still in a very experimental stage with my trees. Your channel (and others) have given me boatloads of ideas. Thanks, keep it up.
Hi Nigel, I like bonsai because everyone has a different view on a particular tree... I would actually grow it taller and prune away the first two branches... Great work 👍🏻
Thanks Patrick, ideally this would make it more tree like, but at this point I don't want to do any major pruning as it will leaves scars and could start the trunk rotting from these pruning points. I should have removed these lower branches many years ago, but back then it was hard to imagine it growing to even 10 inches tall!
i want a boogie so bad but im out of room. its a "growing" problem lulz. bonus tho my hard wood hibiscus cuttings are all doing great. even the thumb thick ones gonna bonsai the one i like the most and put a few in our front garden i have the white and the purplish blue too thanks nigel as always. awesome video hope you and the family are all doing well in this wild time we are in nowadays
A really good video ! I'm wondering, is the lower main branch structure original growth ? The trees looking great and the Pomelo seedlings look like they're doing really good.
Yes, the lower branches are originals from when the tree was just a tiny thing. They are a little low, but I don't want to do any major pruning at this point as the scars I think would spoil the tree and it would begin the process of rotting the trunk. The Pomelo's are doing well, but I still have lots of trees in the Citrus family to plant to round out the Citrus collection! I hope your trees are doing well, I finally got caught up on your latest videos, they are really good ones!
Love these long detail pruning videos. I feel like I learn a lot seeing all your little pruning decisions. :) I notice on this tree many of the branches are fairly straight, headed out horizontally from the center. I wonder if that's related to you pruning off all the upright branches? I am curious if you ever think of keeping the upright branches sometimes and cutting them off other times to get an undulating style! Just a thought, I always love seeing your take on things. Your trees have such a natural style, which makes them really stand out to me amongst the field.
Hello Erik, when the branches are younger, they have more movement to them, then as they grow thicker, the tree naturally smooths out the branches and they become more straight looking. This happens with the trunks on many trees, they start off in life with wild curves in the trunk, but over time nature straightens them out. The branches do still have movement to them, it's just subtle. It gives the old mature branches a unique look to them, a very miniature look that is hard to duplicate, other than with age. I keep new shoots that flow nicely with the existing branch, trying to get a nice look to the branch, I generally avoid sharp kinks on this tree, just to keep it smooth looking. My Larch trees will be the opposite, I'll be keeping all the kinky type branches to develop that random Larch like look to the branches. Take care and bonsai on!
Always pleasant to watch you Nigel! I have a question outside of this video. Since I love Japanese maples, I was wondering why you don't get one? Stay safe!
They are really hard to keep alive here in Ontario with our cold winters. If I get them through the winter, it seems boring beetles attack them late spring and kill them. I have tried many times to grow them and they just keep dying, some after many many years. I have decided to concentrate on more Canadian native maples instead. Sometimes you just have to go with what works in your region.
Hey Nigel! Great video as always! I have a question about your ficus microcarpa from seed. Back in the days, when it was a young tree, was you removing all the lower branches/shoots from the trunk, or you was letting some to grow, to create taper? Would be nice to see photos of it younger, if you have any.
I just found a whole bunch of photos of this tree when it was young, I'll make a video showing the development over the years and hopefully answer your questions! Stay tuned Andrii!
Hey Nigel, I was thinking about repotting my ficus Benjamina this summer, do you know what the best soil is and do you maybe have more tips for repotting?
Summer is a good time to repot a Ficus. It is best when it is hot and humid outside. Any good free draining bonsai soil will work well, be sure your pot has good drainage holes too. After re potting, mist the tree often and keep it out of direct sun for a few days until the tree begins to recover.
Nigel, did you change anything with colour balance? This video has much better colours than previous ones. They had heavy oranges, and yellows, and this one is nicely balanced.
Yes, I shot this in Canon C-log with a custom colour temperature correction. It turned out really well under the yellowish spotlight. I'll have to contunue with these settings!
Hey Nigel I have a pink pixie nd the leaves turned yellow and even the new ones grow out yellow and have a burnt look to the outside of the leaf all the way around it. Tried using iron and it didn’t work. You have any idea what could be going on?
Here is an article that gives some of the reasons for yellow leaves... www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2006-12-03-0612030333-story.html I hope this helps.

They will flower on the new shoots, these shoots need to grow and elongate before they flower. I think if I stop pruning now and let it grow, it should flower in the summer. (Hopefully)!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone thank you for your answer but just to be clear I had not pruned it’s out of shape so it will flower I’ll prune after thanks again
Hello Henry, the chickens are doing well, we have a new little silky, born just a few weeks ago! I'll have to get a video of it. So far everyone is doing well here, we're all staying socially isolated and we don't go out unless it's for food. Hopefully all will go well in the future with all of us.
