I was put on a waiting list for the newer S400 2, I decided to get the S400 SE and boy I was glad I did, remarkable sounding! Every bit as good as the Dynaudio S40 I use to have. I am still a Dynaudio fan and I own several more expensive ones. I agree with you, no matter what I throw at these everything seems to sound good.
Oh my gosh, I've pieced together a solid state setup over the last three years and have been looking to replace the hand-me-down speakers that have become the weak link. The Buchardt s400 has been at the top of my short list but I've not been able to justify the expense with all of the competing expenses. GREAT PRIZE! And great channel.
Got the S400's,,,,, matched them with the IOTASV SA3&PA3 Killer system!!!!! I also use a Yamaha PF800- Turn Table & Yamaha CD player. Basically I use TIDAL HIFI, for streaming. LOVE the SYSTEM.... all for a Reasonable Price. Both, companies BUCHARDT AUDIO & IOTA are fine companies. MAD Barchardt & IAN are both the CEO's of the companies. They deal direct with the customer, when buying Direct from the Manufacture YOUR SAVING LOT OF $$$$$.... no middle man with high mark ups! The IOTA equipment is really in high demand, I waited 5 months for mine, well worth the wait. That's my 2 cents worth. I heard very little if any difference between the Special Edition and the Standard S400's. My Woodgrain S400 are SWEET!!! Thanks for the REVIEW !
Its nice your not making all those edits like reviewers who cuts so much that its annoying. I found that when you moved around the sound seemed stable but I would have liked to have a comparison with another speaker like the atc standing just behind. If I may do a comment, Id be one of those who would like to see a structure to your reviews but clearly your very good and natural and that may not be your way after all. Hello there. I have auditioned S400 as well, quite recntly. And must say, you must try to review AMPHION ARGON 3S. To me, they have everything what S400 has but go further! Try it and I hope I am not going to miss that video! Cheers!
Perhaps the only weakness is they don’t play well at lower volumes. At regular or louder volumes indeed one of the best speakers out there. I would love to see a comparison vs the best 2k-3k floorstander
I beg to differ.It not only depends on the speaker but also your amplifier.The volume on my Atoll IN200 signature is at 13 right now and I still hear all the great detail of my S400s.But when you turn them up the bass radiator kicks in and the bass fills in more.And of course the louder you push them the better they sound.But they are still very enjoyable at low volumes.
Aren't 3-ways better if done right like Andrew Jones' Uni-Fi series?... I'd be afraid of loosing midrange sweetness and concentric driver timing found in his UB5's - Even if the bass is a bit better in the 400's. I'm not comfortable with midrange and bass frequencies sharing the same cone. They have to be interfering with each other.

"Waveguide" is a HORN. A horn-loaded tweeter. A cone-shaped horn. They can call it what they want. Boutique brands like to obfuscate things by using alternative terms. This is NOT a comment on quality or sound, just terminology and how it varies.

I like you snapping the fingers before the demo to let us have a feel of the recording quality. But both demo tracks of same genre ain't helping us or the speakers to showcase the tonality performace. Perhaps a track featuring a guitar/violin or piano solo would be more helpful as we know how it sounds.

I am looking for speakers that can sound like Sonetto III but cost 20-25% less. What can you recommend? I have elac uni-Fi fs 5 - uncontrolled bass. I wanted something better and checked, for example, Buchardt s400. I thought I would add SUB and it would be ok. Unfortunately, it did not impress me. The seller recommended Sonnetto III, which charmed me, unfortunately they are too expensive.
I've seen some of your magazines. I appreciate your way of evaluating the equipment. But I have to make a criticism: for this type of music, equipment of this level of quality is not necessary. Any cheap radio will do. You should hear Jazz and good voices: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Keith Jarrett, Frank Sinatra, Brad Meldhau, Jason Moran, ..., and clasical, Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Mahler, ..., Piano, Cello, Violin, Orchestras. Also modern music, but with quality. I mean Music! Cheers.
Great speakers, no doubt. I like my JBL Studio 530 a bit better, in terms of timbral accuracy and musicality. But not much. I'll keep both pairs. Interestingly, my vintage Polk Audio Monitor 10 speakers from 1986 sound better than both the 530 and S400. That design was magic!
I wonder how they would sound with grindcore metal thrown at them at insanely high power levels. That's what I do to my Legacy Calibre speakers. :) Something like Napalm Death at ear-piercing levels. :)
Hello there! Interesting review! I recently purchased a pair of kef r3. I don't have much experience on audio world. Hope you can share some thoughts about how the kefs, and the buchardts 400 compare. By the way I enjoyed the kefs review very much.
Great European engineering coupled with Chinese economies of scale make the R3 a better deal. The Kef R3 is a monitor in the best sense of the word, the Buchardt editorializes a bit for smothness and might be a smidgen more coherent - both good things for music. With the R3 you really need a modicum of absorption treatment on the side walls. The R3 obviously wins on bass quality / dynamics / SPL. That makes it a better home theater speaker. Also, the R3 prefers a bigger amplifier - the ATI/Monoprice Monolith 7x beast comes to mind.

Maybe next time I'm going to buy one "big" amplifier, or a good of the tube amps. I'm actually enjoying my left r3. .y previous was the kef's ls50, but I found them a little bright, and lacking bass. (The bass was good, but not big or with scale)
Dont get lost in the terms of the Cabinet. It is the speaker units that have the potentials, not the cabinet. The bigger the cabinet usually also follow a bigger mudded bass since the material of the cabinet is to soft and weak. Floorstanding speakers still have to deliver the speaker units potentials. S400 confuses since it have that slave bass.

Fruityflava He said only 20 were made. And the video says s400 se. EDIT: The SE are in black oak only that is also how you know they are signature, they made 25 of them and have since sold them out. The difference is the crossover got an upgrade. You can see the crossovers from all buchardt speakers on their website.

@Peder Hansen No distributor, no dealer mark up, they are over priced, there are comparable speakers from Aurelia that have dealer mark up and cost the same or less.
The S400 speakers are worth the money.They are a technological marvel.The fact that room placement does not effect them too much because of the more expensive passive radiator design is a huge advantage over a lot of other speakers and definitely makes them worth the price.The Special edition might be overpriced because of little difference in sound quality.But the original S400s are a hell of a deal considering the brilliantly designed speakers you are getting.

It's not an amp issue. I drive them with 300W per channel amp. You just need to give them decent volume to shine.

I change speakers like underwear, but my S400 speakers are permanent fixtures in my system. My favorite monitor under $5,000. This review nails it.

Completly wrong. 1k and 25k speakers use Sometimes the same speakers but the cabinet construktion is what make the sonic difference.

What preamp and amp? Equipment list?
Do these work for nearfield or desktop? Which one work better in that setup, S300 or S400?
The S300's would be much better for nearfield, but they are very large bookshelf speakers. The S400's need some space for the sound to come together.
How does it match with the Atoll IN 200 Signature?

For me KEF R3 are the winners here. IMHO from the current Buchardt line the S300 are a better choice in its price range than S400 in its price range.

The Buchardts do not have thin bass. For the size it has a very healthy and meaty bass in my experience over the past two years.

@Doan Trinh I feel same the more I see these UA-cam reviews. But we have risk free return option. We can try if we know what not right in our current speakers and what we want , rather simply buying based on these reviews :)
You shouldn't make that assumption unless you have heard them.
How do they pair with Hegel H190?
They sound fabulous with the Hegel H190. I also added a REL subwoofer but really don’t need it. The S400 goes pretty deep.
