Just about everyone says "Gene Hoglan", and then the guy that has played with Gene Hoglan says "John Bonham".
I was about to say the same thing haha
it sounds even more ridiculous because Bonham is not a metal drummer :)
Hellhammer
I was gonna say that😂😂
Dmitri Katsman he influenced a lot of metal drummers
man I feel like Thomas Haake never gets any love
devan reiss He does. Even if Meshuggah doesn't get a mainstream praise they are still very respected among the bands within metal
They probably didn’t say that because they thought someone else would
You should check out the interview with Bill Burr about Thomas!
I think his greatest asset is something that is absent in many modern drummers: exceptional groove.
Most likely because Gene is one of the pioneers of technical drumming in metal. He was doing the shit these prog drummers are doing way back in 82.
All non-metalfans: Man! You gotta be in shape to be a metal drummer!
Gene Hogan and Nicholas Barker: Hold my burgers...
did you see the vids where gene plays drums with combat boots & ankle weights? in shape or not, he never skips leg/calf day :D
@@davidbonar5190 not to mention Hoglan's lost a lot of weight
@@manuelfinale9231 Yeah is a much better look than the Michal Bland thing he had going there for awhile. Being obese isn't great for long term career goals either.
genes lost a ton of weight, he looks great now
Vyl has entered the chat
Tomas Haake is my choice.
unun septium \m/
It's gotta be Animal from the Muppets.......
That would be Keith Moon and yes one of my favorites
Yes!
@@Z32spdstr not metal tho
Gene Hoglan is probably the most legendary because he was part of so much great shit over the years but if we're going with straight ability I don't see him beating someone like Tomas Haake, that dude is a machine.
The Atomic Clock
+metfan4l idk If they had a go to see who is better and if Gene beat Haake, I don't think it would make Tomas any less of a drummer. Gene is a beast, and I've heard him play some really great stuff. But there is just so many killer drummers out there that its really hard to choose. There are a lot of guys that are criminally underrated, like Flo Mournier. Some say he is sloppy but I'm telling you, any band that has him as a drummer, wouldn't be complaining. He doesn't sound sloppy to me. Other guys that are criminally underrated Lex Kincaid he played on a record with Soulfly. And after listening to him, I think he can play just about anything, had he been out there more, he definitely would have made a name for himself as a monster. Chris Kontos the best Machine Head drummer, imo. Just a whole bunch of really good drummers out there no one talks about. Jon Dette who always seems to step up for Slayer when they needed a drummer, but he never found a permanent seat in that band, also really good.
100% agree
Chris Adler, anyone?
There's nothing that Haake can do that Gene can't do. Sorry, Gene is better.
Gene Hoglan has been very influential. Being the greatest is subjective of course, and for me he never fails to amaze and satisfy.
Tomas Haake hands down. Not only a brilliant, top tier drummer, but an incredible lyricist as well.
Haake is a mix of swedish church drums and herb alexander from primus
Mario Duplantier, man :)
dave o Barrie Barlow
yes
dave o The best? No, but Mario is really creative and knows how to write a really good drum part.
Stranded
how could you argue with that? everyone loves those frenchies
Any drummers that played in Death
FlyinVJs30RR Gene Hoglan lol
Sean Reinert.
Richard Christy
But that also includes Chris Reifert and Bill Andrews who are just standard death metal drummers. Not bad drummers by any means, but far from the 'best' drummers in metal.
FlyinVJs30RR Richard Christy is my favorite drummer, he’s so intricate but at the same time so powerful. Shame all he does is drink beer with his ass nowadays.
Martin Lopez, used to play with Opeth. *Masters Apprentices!*
And Brann Dailor. Always makes Mastodons sound so interesting
Danny Carey.
Eddard Stark lololol
The fuck are you loling about? Have you ever heard Danny Carey play?
Nathan McGlocklin yeah, best metal drummer ever? Not even close come on dude
Brendan McDonald He is one Of the best ;) you dont need to play Like a Fucking machine gun to be a Metal drummer man ;D
This would have been my pick
Gene Hoglan. His work with Death was genius, he allowed Chuck the opportunity to push the boundaries. Nick Menza gets a posthumous mention from me.
Sean Reinert is such a wonderful drummer, he takes the cake for me!
Sean was on a totally different level, we're so lucky that Sean and Chuck played together!
Rest In Peace Sean 💔
George Kollias, Kirk Arrington, Dave McClain, Charlie Benante, Pete Sandoval, Mike Portnoy, Gene Hoglan, Dave Lombardo, Michel Langevin, Nicko McBrain, ....to name a few.
The metal drummer I've been most obsessed with recently is Jaime Saint Merat from Ulcerate. Heavy, fast, and complex as shit, but with touch, sensitivity, details, and dynamics that's extremely rare in metal drumming, especially in extreme metal. In a way he's like a return to the days when Bill Ward was so influenced by jazz.
James The Rev Sullivan
Nick Menza
Gar Samuelson
Vinnie Paul
Nicko McBrain
Dave Lombardo
Thrash Metal - Dave Lombardo, Charlie Benante, Nick Menza, Gene Hoglan, Igor Cavalera
Death Metal - Gene Hoglan, Nicholas Barker, Derek Roddy, Dennis Röndum, Tomas Haake
Grindcore - Nicholas Barker, Pete Sandoval, Adam Jarvis, David McGraw, Kai Hahto
Black Metal - Hellhammer, Frost, Inferno, Nicholas Barker, Dominator
Progressive Metal - Mark Zonder, Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, Bobby Jarzombek, Danny Carey
Power Metal - Thomen Stauch, Kai Hahto, Ingo Schwichtenberg, Ed Warby, Mike Terrana
Solid list :)
I would add Brann Dailor to Progressive
Nice to see some love for Hellhammer
What about mario duplantier?
BassManqk You forgot Lars Ulrich, Peter Criss and Ringo. I’d have put Ringo instead of Hogaln or whatever his stupid name is, but that’s just my opinion
Gene Hoglan. Any day. He has taught me so much over the years, especially with his dvds. He is not only a damn amazing drummer, but he just seems like a great, humble, down to earth guy. I haven't met him yet, but it is my absolute dream to some day meet him.
Richard Christy (Death, Iced Earth, Charred Walls of the Damned) for pure drumming excellence.
Great drummer with a unique style.
2nd best Death drummer ever! Reinert was on another level.
The sound of perseverance is my jam
@@buckfuttler2877 Hard to rate them dude, they had 3 absolutely top class drummers
@@buckfuttler2877 Reinert, Hoglan and Christy. These 3 are fucking beasts.
'theres a 7 year old kid in Asia who's probably better" lol
Shun Jags it’s funny because it’s true
Hideki Aoyama
Total douchebag answer
@Sasi Naos likewise, but mine was well written
Dumb answer
I'm glad Max mentioned Bill Ward, that dude is truly a beast. I think War Pigs was to metal drumming what Good Times Bad Times was to rock drumming.
My favorite metal drummer is Dave Lombardo, ex drummer of Slayer, This dude is amazing.
Here's my favorites in no particular order; John Bonham, Tomas Haake, Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, Gene Hoagland, George Kollias (suprised he wasn't mentioned), Nicko McBrain, Inferno, Lars Ulrich, Tommy Lee, Dave Lombardo, Charlie Benante, Nick Menza, Chris Adler, Hellhammer, Dave Holland (RIP), Cozy Powell, Vinnie Appice, Carmen Appice, Nick Barker, Frost, Vinnie Paul, etc...
I agree with most of those but Tommy Lee?
I wish Pete Sandoval had been mentioned even once.
One of my favorite concert experiences was watching Pete do a soundcheck on his drums. To hear his blazing speed all by itself
Yeah, I think him or Haake would have to be my pick.
I mean he practiced to be faster than a fucking drum machine. Never went to school to learn how to play drums and can play not only metal but in a symphony Orchestra while recovering from surgery!!.
Alk the great blast beat drummers of today and those who were influenced need to recognize this guy we owe him so goddam respect. Sounds like a machine gun and was the first to introduce the world to his machine gun sounding conmando shotting drum machine sounding beats!
Pete Sandoval.
Gene Hoglan, Steve Asheim, Romain Goulon... many amazing drummers impossible to choose.
So general consensus is Gene Hoglan.
Check out Hoglan's drumming on Strapping Young Lad's Almost Again, it's sublime.
well.... he is a great drummer. its kinda not surprising at all to keep hearing his name as "favorite list"
Vinnie Paul? He's very skilled and has a very distinct sound.
Was 😣
@@Z32spdstr That's so sad, fuck.
pretty surprised yet relieved that nobody said Portnoy. Good mentions would be Spencer Prewette , Shannon Lucas, John Boecklin, Tim Yueng, Jon "the Charn" Rice.
Nicholas Barker for me
Travis Barker for me! Lol
Bonham and Peart are absolutely legends, and they have influenced every metal drummer ever, whether directly or not, but they were not metal drummers. It's same as trying to call Van Halen a metal guitarist. He is arguably the biggest influence on metal guitar playing and gear ever, and he is "metal", but he's not a metal guitarist.
Flo mournier of cryptopsy
Ahhh, I forgot about him. He's fucking unbelievable. His brutal drumming is what makes Cryptopsy so unique. Love how he incorporates some of his jazz influences in their songs
Hoglan and Lombardo are both acceptable answers.
I’d say those guys and Chris Adler
Hahaha, nope! The question was who's the greatest drummer in metal history not who's the greatest drummer in Lamb of God. Which we all know is John Campbell.
Since no one is mentioning him, Vinnie Paul? Insanely talented drummer, miss him
blown _away_ no one mentioned Danny Heifetz. his ability to move in and out of *simultaneously* held diff. time signatures across the body at the breakneck pace Mr. Bungle would always put out is beyond incredible!
This is me trying to be as objective as possible with this list:
1. Tomas Haake
2. George Kollias
3. Gene Hoglan
4. Francesco Paoli
5. Eloy Casagrande
6. Mario Duplantier
I think these guys are the best in Metal, thought I will say that Vinnie Paul, Chris Adler an Duplantier are my favourite drummers
Haake and Adler for me
Mike Portnoy, Brann Dailor. They pack the talent and they bring their own originality to the rock/metal genre
love Hoglan's stuff, especially with Death...... however my pick would boil down of guys like Lombardo, Zonder, Portnoy, Menza..... especially Mark Zonder is criminally underrated, his work on "Perfect Symmetry" album is a big reason why that record is not only one of the best prog metal albums, but one of the greatest albums in heavy metal...... also a huge fan his first band Warlord
Charlie Benante is awesome, as is Dave Lombardo. The one who surprised me the most was Mike Cox of Coal Chamber, his technique fascinated me.
Martin Axenrot (Opeth, Witchery, Bloodbat) is a great and very underrated drummer.
This video didn't have to be longer than 9 seconds, because the first answer was the right answer ... Dave Lombardo.
I would say the right answer was a little bit later, the mighty Atomic Clock, mr Gene Hoglan ;)
The one who taught Lombardo how to play double bass tho lol
Danny Carey and Brann Dailor
DC is too College Basketballed up.
@@melissaportillo9964 who gives a shit what he wears? go listen to some ffdp if image is important to you and the music isnt.
I saw Gene with SYL back in '08.
I feel very lucky to have witnessed a drummer many of his colleagues consider to be the greatest.
Charlie is surely up there in the top 5. Probably the most underrated musician in metal. Brilliant drummer, pretty reasonable guitarist, writes most of anthrax’s music and of course let’s not forget his work with S.O.D. Speak English or Die is one of the heaviest albums from the 1980’s .Just amazes me the lack of respect he gets for his back catalogue.
fr. Charlie deserves more credit
It's a hard choice for me to pick one in metal. I love George Kollias, Inferno, Dominator, and Nicolas Barker just to name a few. I can't pick one in the metal genre.
I'd say Nick Menza, Nicko McBrain, or Scott Travis
Oh man, I feel bad for not even picturing Nicko when this question is brought up. Up the Irons!
Clive Burr.
nicko could be the "greatest", but talent wise, hes not top 500.
Recently started listening to Quo Vadis, drummer name is Yanick Bercier,i think, to lazy to check that name, but dude is a beast, also love Gene and Sean and gotta give love to Nick Menza
For me it is Baard Kolstad of Leprous. I mean the dude was a prodigy in Norway or something.
Check out his drum cam recording of ‘Rewind’ and ‘Third Law’. To me, he has it all: skill, speed, creativity and passion.
0:10 Finally Nicke gets some recognition, can't say he's the greatest, but he certainly deserves to be consider among the best ones.
@@anon8510 Do you at least know what is Wikipedia and that you can research people in it?
@@anon8510 Oh well..it's Nicke Andersson as Tomi says in the video.
Nicke's work on Clandestine is top notch, perhaps the ultimate in death metal drumming
I would habe said Gene Hoglan, Richard Christi, or Sean Reinhardt.
Reinert
You listen to a lot of Death, don't you? Excellent picks!
Most of Death drummers are insanely awesome
@@RealDeathMetalLover didn't realize that until now. Death is awesome but those dudes generally kick ass. Despite having played in death. Lol
I would also say Gene Hoglan, saw him with Testament and his drumming blowed everybody away. So clear, dynamic and powerful. But there is also the Jarzombek Brothers (Watchtower guitarist, Blotted Science, Spastic Ink) : the drummers played on theses Albums were the most technical, precise and advanced drumming I ever heard and Bobby Jarzombek is the most underrated or unknown metal Drummer in the World.
Shocked but not shocked that Gene gets all the love. I saw him side on once..... drinking a can of red bull....he turned towards me, it was two cans of red bull in the same hand. Oh Gene.
I have to agree with the popular vote, Gene is a legend with an epic catalogue of recordings. My personal pick though is Dirk Verbeuren, nobody touches him in my opinion. The parts he writes are beautiful and nobody can play extreme metal while still having groove the way he does. People can play his parts, but it doesn't sound the same at all.
Jamie St. Merat from Ulcerate is probably my favorite :)
askingforafriend that dude is a beast!
askingforafriend now THIS guy gave the right answer
Kinda sad that almost everyone referred to Gene Hoglan but only the Guys from Cattle Decap also mentioned Sean Reinert, his drumming on Human is legendary
Donald Tardy of Obituary is amazing, and "Away"from Voivod as well, highly underrated .
Lemmy said it was Mikkey Dee and it's hard to argue against Lemmy...
Other than Mikkey, I'd pick Dave McClain from Machine Head.
Dave McClain? You mean that guy that isn't that good, who replaced an absolute beast? No. Learn more about drumming. Mikkey Dee is awesome, though.
Loping Camshaft Finally someone who mentions him.
alphaenemy Isn't that good?
The guy is a fucking beast even at 51.
What happened to Kontos?
Nobody even knows him anymore.
Loping Camshaft Dave McClain is just a standard metal drummer
Lemmy does not even listen to metal.
Scott rockenfield from queensryche
Madly underrated.
Yes, unbelieveble drummer
James Redding right on man
All of these are great. Not fair to try and pick a best. I've been listening to high on fire the last few days and Des Kensel is no joke either. The new kid for Sepultura, Eloy Casagrande is a beast too.
Aside from the obvious favorites (Gene, etc...), I have been impressed with Jamie St Merat, Matt Gartska, and Spencer Prewitt lately.
Almost everybody said Hoglan, but the only guy in the video who ACTUALLY plays with Hoglan (Chuck from Testament), names somebody else jajajaajajajaa
Bill fuckin Ward.
For technicality I like Marco Minnemann. Not only does he play in the technical death metal band Necrophagist, he also has a jazz fusion band called the aristocrats. He has also played with a wide variety of bands from Joe Satriani to Kreator.
For huge body of work, Gene Hoglin.
And for sheer drum pounding,, complete off the chart insanity, Dave Lombardo. The best drummer I've ever seen live. He's a fucking machine.
Billy Rymer for me, his ability to incorporate jazz elements and execute it in some crazy technical songs brings everything he does to a whole new level than many of the drummers I see mentioned, I still agree that gene hoglan is definetly one of the best though his playing is just so tight sounding
When it comes to Metal I gotta go with Mario from Gojira, Brann Dailor from Mastodon, and Justin Foley from Kse. If AAL was more of an actual metal band, Matt Garstka would be easily #1
lol the first 2 you named are both better than garstka. most overrated drummer on earth.
@@buckfuttler2877 how long have you been drinking your bath water? Garstka is awesome. Bonham is over rated.
@@warrenstemphly5756 yeah hes really good. Not better than Mario or Brann though. And i agree about Bonham.
@@buckfuttler2877 Garstka is more “progressive jazz” than metal for sure, a modern Stuart Copeland maybe. He certainly should be mentioned alongside the others. Have you seen the Meinhl video of him playing Missy Elliot’s Get your freak on? It’s killer!
@@warrenstemphly5756 i love me some Matt. i've seen most of his vids on UA-cam, and i've seen AAL probably half a dozen times. love them.... when i say he's "overrated", all i mean is that some people will claim he's the best drummer in the world, when there are a ton of guys just as good or better. I put him in that "hes in my favorite band, so he HAS to be the best drummer on earth" category. Ala John Bonham. I also think Matt is the 2nd best drummer AAL ever had , lol. Navene Koperweis is better imho.
Mike Smith from Suffocation should have been mentioned
Def one of the best blasters
@@jaymoto9820 the best blaster is Fjellstrom
Lots of great choices. My PERSONAL choices Dave Lombardo, Ben Koller, Chris Pennie, Billy Rymer, Early Paul Bostaph for metal.
It's all opinion.. im a drummer and i really love people like Gene Hoglan, Thomas Hakke, David Diepold, Alex Rudinger, Adam Pierce, Daniel Erlandersson.. then there, Portnoy, Peart, Mangini, all different styles, all personal opinion...
George Kollias.
I was wondering where the Kollias hype was!
George Kollias is anazing too
Blah
joey jordison, tastiest grooves, fastest double kicks that never get old no matter how many times you hear it, one of the nicest metal musicians out there , never played bad live, could play when he was so sick he had to be carried on stage, could play in weird possitions and upside down, no matter what he never sounded bad behind the kit, that my friends is a quality musician right there.
Jordison was a phenomenal drummer, but there were drummers with faster double kicks, faster blast beats and overall technical proficiency.
That being said, Jordison fucking ripped, and he inspired countless drummers.
@@johnzackarias11 faster maybe, but no one can replicate his style and energy
@nordicshredder4128 I love Joey, but drummers like Nicholas Barker could play circles around him.
@@AK-47ISTHEWAY nick barker was awesome but vimic era joey was practically equal if you listen to his drum work from them
Federici Paulovich from Destrage. Not very well known but across the board....groove, tech, speed, style, etc.
Some PERSONAL favorites... Lombardo, Chris Adler, Tomas haake, Abe Cunningham, ben koller, the rev, dan carle, and maybe Matt greiner
Bill Ward, almost never 4/4 time and wrote most of the lyrics that set the benchmark for metal
UA-camrs usually aren't that impressive to me, because they do alot of covers. Writing your own stuff that jams is way more impressive to me than just playing technical, or fast.
So many greats. All different with a great style to add. I like Scott Travis. He's like this merciless pounding machine. And he nails all those old signature fills.
Amazing that Travis the only one who really made a very interesting and right choice. Sean Reinert of Cynic/ Death is one of the greatest for sure. Love that guy.
If you would ask me for top 3, it would be Sean Reinert, Mario Duplantier and Steve Flynn, but really there are a lot more amazing drummers.
That is what I am saying. Too sad that he passed away…
picking a favorite drummer is like being a parent-it is next to impossible to pick a favorite child or person.
Flo Mounier, personally.
Top 3 for me
1 - Mike Portnoy
2 - Dave Lombardo
3 - Gene Hoglan
Ad 2 more make it top 5 and ad Reinhardt and benante
Hoglan was teaching Lombardo in show no mercy album how to play.....he's 100 times better....
nick barker crushes all of them
Matheus Navarro ,plus LARS ULRICH from Metallica.
The Rev was always one of my favorites (RIP), but for me it’s hard to top drummers like Dillinger’s Billy Rymer, Blake Richardson of BTBAM, Mastodon’s Brann Dailor, Tomas Haake of Meshugga, Thomas Pridgen from Mars Volta’s Bedlam in Goliath album, Chris Turner of Oceans Ate Alaska, Danny Carey of Tool, Sepultura’s Eloy Casagrande, and of course Luke Holland.. and idk if you can consider them metal drummers, but all respects to Zach Hill (Hella) and Lee Smith (Estradasphere)
Dave Lombardo , Pete Sandoval , Gene Hoglan , George Kollias , Tim Yeung , Sean Reinert (early day) , Ingo Swichtenberg
Gar Samuelson
Beast.
you my freind are 1000% correct
And Nick Menza
Gar was great
+1 virtual hug
Lombardo
There are so many that it's impossible to choose. Gene, Dave Lombardo, Pete Sandoval, Chris Pennie from Dillinger Escape Plan, Tomas Haake, Kenny Schalk from Candiria, even Lars Ulrich because he laid down some good groove before even taking drum lessons, it's a damn hard choice.
I can answer one of my favorites is easily Mario Duplantier of Gojira. Guy must be constructed out of like 5 different clocks to keep all that time
Bill Ward, Vinnie Paul, Igor Cavalera, Mike Bordin.
Love Mike Bordin! One of my all-time favorites in my favorite band of
all time! He's about a solid as they come. Nothing too flashy or technical, just straight up grooves that fit perfectly
None of them said, "Mike Portnoy"? Smh
They were wise.
please xD
Tony Avila fuck that pretentious overrated douchebag
Say whatever you wanna say Mike has been an incredibly influential drummer over the years, his drum concepts are the basics of modern metal drums, along with Tomas Haake and other guys, and he inspired a whole generation of players. Of course there are faster, more technical and superior drummers but this doesn't mean he doesn't deserve any recognition just because he's an egocentric douche. Now the reason none of the musicians in the video named him is because all of them play a genre of metal that is quite distant from the dream theater one.
MrNoxxis I agree, this is feels like a bias video tho
So glad someone mentioned my favorite metal drummer ever and probably the most underrated Mikkey fucking Dee!
Kirk Arrington from Metal Church. He was my favorite growing up in the 80s.
How did Tom hunting wasn’t mentioned?
yes awesome drummer too
As much as I love Tomas and his incredible footwork. I’d also say Gene, not only is he fucking skilled, clean, smooth etc. He’s also a huuuuuge influence to the metal community in general. Death will always be a part of our soul and without gene, there wouldn’t have been a “Death”
Ishmam Ahmed That is not true at all. Gene Hoglan didn’t come around till Individual Thought Patterns. Death would of existed with or without him, even though he contributed a lot to ITP and Symbolic.
Agreed but it wouldnt be the death we know today
Deen Castronovo, the man can play any style. plus he's played on artist/bands like cacophony, marty friedman, Tony macalpine, james murphy, joey tafolla to name a few. Mickey Dee is also a beast. those first 3 King diamond albums were masterpieces.
Tomas Haake, Brann Dailor, Dave Lombardo, Hideki Aoyama, my personal favourites. plus many more...
Matt Garstka and Elliot Hoffman.
The guy before Garstka, Navene Koperweis. Check him out with Entheos.
I'm no expert and I don't listen to every metal band there is but how a bout, um, Chris Adler?
SplendidTruth easily the most technically enhanced drummer right now
Chronic Delta I think you need to look better or deeper... Just to get you started Marco Minneman or Matt Gartska
Paulo Mendes yeah just recently found Marco cuz of the aristocrats he's phenomenal
Steve Flynn(Atheist), Ken Owen, Tim Alexander, Gene Hoglan, John Dolmayan, Dave Lombardo, Pete Webber, Chris Kontos, Vinnie Paul.
Going with Gene Hoglan.
His work with Dethklok and Galaktikon is astounding.
(Yes I know he has more work, but those are the ones I know best)
Nils Fjellstrom- Dark Funeral
dude's a beast for sure
OP
Dale Crover. His drumming is like molten lava flow.
WarHead he fuckin blew my mind when I saw the Melvins a couple months ago.
Morbid Angel has the lava flow.
@@xamphibiax yea, Pete Sandoval is sick as well.
Crover is like the power behind the throne. The impact Melvins had of metal is always overlooked and understated. Dale and Buzz built the weapons that killed L.A. music.
Glad to see someone mention Nicke Anderson.
So, so, so many greats. I love Jarzombek, Hoglan, and Priester.
