Another informative and honest video. Thank you Andrew
👍😃
Excellent thanks very much for posting another very enjoyable and informative video.
As always a great and interesting video.
Great video Andrew, nice cultivator doing a great job.
Typical Simba, ahead of its time,
Thank you for another great blog Andrew
👍😃
Interesting video thanks
Andrew, great video as always, I remember back in the day (1970s) just up the road from you on the Barnby Manor Estate, just east of Newark, we were using a MF 1200 on a set of heavy disks, that would always crab a little on virgin stubble resulting in cracking of the rear near side hub through the mounting bolt holes. This happened a couple of times.
That’s not far from me! My neighbour had a 1200 too.
Andrew, it’s not the first time you’ve been in a Valtra!! You’ve been in our exactly the same model! Regards, your nephew! 😂
I know!! As you know, your uncles memory is not what it was!!! 😬
Thanks for the update Andrew. Finding ergot in your malting barley samples is a pain over the years I've had loads of wheat and barely with ergot and it's not been picked up in the sample but malting barley is obviously subject to more tests so is more likely to be picked out. Hopefully getting it cleaned should get it through keeping my fingers crossed for you. Thanks again.
I think it’s worked thanks David as the loads went back to Burton on Trent yesterday and went through.
There is never a good year in farming, just when you think your drying costs would be down and a fairly straightforward harvest and along comes Ergot to take a bit of profit. Hope you don't get anymore hidden problems Mr Ward. Good update as always.
Exactly. I suppose we can’t moan, imagine if we’d had to dry every ton as well!
The Case sounds very throaty! 👌
Great tractor. 👌😃
Every video contains more stuff you’d never even thought about or knew about.
Thank you, I try to keep them interesting!
Excellent bonus mid week video. Never seen a grain colour sorter before, does the farm where it is installed use it on all crops or just on Barley ?. Never been keen on duals on front axles, fine on the rear, but does put a lot of strain on hubs and steering joints etc.
The. Ollie sorters do a job because we got 3 loads accepted which we wouldn’t have done before.
What an amazing piece of equipment the colour sorter is. Can you not use the tailings as a part mix in a covercrop mix, would the ergot just rot in the ground.
It really is.
Another interesting video 👍, do you ever work out your base saturations in your soils, I see you know your clay contents off by heart be interesting to know those base saturation levels builds a fuller picture
I don’t but soil health and make up is something we need to get better at.
Valtra q series they just launched looks really good.
Anyone who has one speaks highly of them.
Andrew, you obviously get on well with the Simba kit which always was good stuff, you know the top man who was at Simba and Mowbray, you have a good workshop, can’t you get the original drawings and build some new kit to suit you. It’s complicated but you have all you need at your disposal.
The new model equivalent would be the Great plains Qualidisc I think.
It’s very complicated and would take a huge amount of time and work. I’d rather find a used machine if I can.
Had the same problem with ergot last year cost a fortune with extra haulage and cleaning but this spring we bought some spring barley seed off a merchant and was full off ergot they told me you are allowed so much in it 🤔 I will not mention the company name but it is a big company
One rule for one………..
That’s the reason I use as much of our own seed as possible.
Clay has incredibly small particles, bentonite is smaller than bacteria and has a very high charge compared to other clays
Good update.
Can’t wait for the 8RX to arrive so I gay my £10 🤣
I had my fingers crossed…….!!!
Have you tried a horsch joker yet?
Yes! Great machine.
What angle do you set the discs on the Simba Xpress?
The surface must be left level so disc angle depends on soil type and varies field to field. Common complaint with some of these type of machines is they don’t leave a level finish but that’s because operators keep the same settings for every field.
Do you do any ploughing on your farm?
We’ve not ploughed anything since 2003.
Not convinced by that sorting machine, seemed to be rejecting alot of barely for 1 or 2 ergot🤦
The loads went through fine so it worked, with the ergot in, the crop was virtually unsalable.
Can’t you feed the waste seed to the pheasants and wild birds over winter
No because I don’t want the spores spread over the farm, it needs to be got rid of.
May I just ask why you don't just get a wider simba express ?
Simba was bought by Greatplains years ago.
That’s what we are looking for but not that many were built so that reflects 2nd hand availability. Also the 10m ones had some design flaws and so I need to be careful buying a load of trouble!
