Wow, this is the spirit of Bop. As much as I love post modern, impressionistic multiple substitution-based harmonic playing Jazz, in a way there's nothing like hard swinging, burning 'traditional Bop standards. this is phenomenal, the whole band is incredible, didn't know Bjorn Solli's playing, fantastic to hear that Bop guitar is so well represented in Europe. Vibes player great too and the rhythm section is killing and on fire. And then there is Seamus Blake. My jaw is on the floor, This has to be arguably the greatest playing I've ever hear of him - He gets more and more into it w/ each chorus, There's a reason why music and playing like this is the bench mark where it all the modern stuff starts. What I'm saying is what you all know, it's quite difficult to stick to the changes and remain interesting for so many choruses. If you can do that, you're a bad mother. Seamus can play it all.
seamus blake is a totally top drawer tenor guy ,pure class.
i read ‘drop drawer’ but yeah, slaying.
my drawers always drop while listening to seamus
As a sax player, that line starting at the bridge @7:27 is the highlight for me, that guitar solo was pretty awesome as well. I'm feeling the drummer too. And those vibes sound sweet!!!
Never heard of this guy but top drawer tenor and great tone too. Top band - vibes, guitar very cool playing. All the best from England keep swinging lads!
I could tell it was Wikan from the shirt in the first second! Great to hear you all!
Great, kudos all around! Loved hearing you in this se thing, Tim, swinging so hard and keeping the four mallets throughout!
Se thing = setting (damn spellcheck)
Seamus Blake you are a wonderful modern boppers -Seamus school
Seamus a Beast saxophonist !!
Red and Tal are smiling down from jazz heaven!
Red Norvo and Tal Farlow, I presume 😉
wow had no idea you played at Herr Nilsen... I used to live in Oslo from 2008 - 2013.. Herr Nilsen was my joint! Was in there almost every week :D. I once saw the vibist Dave Friedman play a duet with Rob Waring in another club in Oslo vibes and marimba.. amazing times... was a real highlight for me.
I come to Norway fairly often actually - and I saw Rob Waring myself just a few months ago when I was there. Small world!
@@TimCollinsVibes it is indeed! I'm shocked! I'm living on the west coast of Norway these days... was in Oslo a few months back for xmas dinner and meeting old jazz friends...
Seamus Blake real treat !
Yo, Seamus KILLS!!!!
I'm discontented with homes that I've rented
So I have invented my own
Darling, this place is lovely oasis
Where life's weary taste is unknown
Far from the crowded city
Where flowers pretty caress the stream
Cozy to hide in, to live side by side in
Don't let it apart in my dream
Picture me upon your knee
Just tea for two
And two for tea
Just me for you
And you for me alone
Nobody near us to see us or hear us
No friends or relations
On weekend vacations
We won't have it known
That we own a telephone, dear
Day will break and I'll wake
And start to bake a sugar cake
For you to take for all the boys to see
We will raise a family
A boy for you
And a girl for me
Can't you see how happy we would be
Picture you upon my knee
Just tea for two
And two for tea
Just me for you
And you for me alone
Nobody near us to see us or hear us
No friends or relations
On weekend vacations
We won't have it known
That we own a telephone, dear
Day will break, you'll wake
And start to bake a sugar cake
For you to take for all the boys to see
We will raise a family
A boy for you
And a girl for me
incredible

Seamus kinda sounds like Stan Getz and Coltrane together.

@@JuanluGarcia sounds like a Norwegian tenor player.

Play at 1.25
Ok that's 👍
Hey Tim, sorry if this has been answered already but what mallets are you using in this vid?
They sound like they're a great pair for cutting through a sizeable combo, but not too shrill, would you say so?
Thanks in advance and all the best!
TR
I would agree- those are the old Dave Friedman mallets made by Malletech.. the new ones are pretty similar and made by Innovative Percussion.
bird would be really impressed by seamus blake
wowowowowowowowow
Seamus please share your cheat codes. Left, right, X, O, Y, up, down, down didn’t work :/
6:07
Drummer's face compared to others! Goes to show that we drummers have very little to worry about in jazz!
So this is improvisational jazz
9:24 That is just ridiculous....
Bro just screamed it out. What a fantastic solo.
Great guitarist. Interesting way of holding the pick..

Great command by Seamus, perhaps it's possible though to practice a little much. It's also possible that players like this work extremely hard to execute velocity like this over changes, ....I could not do it. Their virtuosity is spectacular, now I long to hear a ballad.
His solo performance of Body and Soul is pretty amazing

Drummer too…
this song is too easy. He should have used the Barry harris changes .
comments like your's are why I read the comments! ha
Joel Steinke
Indeed , comments can be good at times.
Play it at 1.25 (lots of fun I think)
Are the Barry Harris changes the same as the Monk changes for Tea for Two, aka Skippy?
lets hear you do it then , it would be a load of shite ,ha ha ha
Great technology, but no soul they've lost the plot.
What do you mean by soul? When I listen to this it sounds like it’s bursting with energy and every musician here is playing their heart out. It sounds and looks like they are putting every fiber of their being into this performance
bad intro by solli quintet
No soul.
You aren't listening closely enough... In my humble opinion this is radiating with nothing but love for the music and all the musicians were speaking very honestly. If that doesn't qualify for "soulful" then maybe I'm just out.
This is not a soul composition.
Donal Donnelly, you are why comments sections are known cesspools of negativity. Also Seamus is one of the more ‘soulful’ tenor players on the scene today.
You gotta be kidding me. If you have no ear/palate for Jazz and Bop, why do you bother? 'Soul'? Like those 5 sax arrangements on your channel? Did you record that on a keyboard? You think you got more 'Soul' than these musicians? You sound like one of those musicians w/ mediocre technique who are jealous of musicianship and chops and who every time there's a virtuoso playing at fast tempo will say it lacks 'Soul'.
It’s true, there are some echoes of Stan Getz when he used to play really fast in Seamus’ phrases. Much prefer Seamus’ overall tone though. Of course Getz played like that in the late 50s, so cripes, that’s over 60 years ago..
