Wow! So glad to hear you counsel folks to straddle the bike to kick it. That’s how I learned to do it many years ago. Certainly less embarrassing if the jiffy stand accidentally folds as well. Watched that happen a few times in my 50+ years of riding. Awesome bike, Mike! 👍🏻😎
Nice Video Mike. I had 1942 Flat Head back in 1955 when I was 14. I treated that poor thing terrible, but it always started and ran. I agree with you totally of straddling the bike to start it. I could never understand the side winders. It just looks awkward to me. Wish I had kept mine. Hind sight and a family. But at 82 I am still riding a 99 Softail Custom. Not long rides anymore, but around the back roads where I live.
@@pacificmike9501 Quick question Mike! On the subject of not being started on a regular basis, can the hyd lifters on the non compressed valves creep up to hold the valves slightly open dropping the compression when you kick her over for the prime kicks?

I didn't expect you having problems because you know the bike like the back of your hand. You understand the different systems and what happens when left sitting for that period of time, and we all know that experience is one of the best teachers. Good video!
I'm a straddler too. I'm 6' 1" and 275 lbs. When I kick the bike through it will lift off the side stand and move on me. When I am on the bike I can hold the front brake and push against the handlebars to stabilize the bike. I do have issues with my right hip now from kicking bikes over for so many years. I'll have to bring my Pan over so Baby Doll can have a talk with it about proper starting behavior. I started mine last night, last time it ran was June 14, 2022, it needed quite a few more kicks than yours to finally agree. However there was no oil out the breather and it didn't die so I'm happy. Such a pretty bike!!.....I have a real soft spot for the pans....think they are just the prettiest of them all... everything is balanced on the pans... don't know how else to describe it......great video,Mike....are you getting back to the flathead anytime soon?

HI Mike, great video! can you show us how much oil is in your catch pan? Just curious, as I usually catch mine with a "special" fitting I put on the hole at the rear of the inner chain cover that I can put a hose on it and route to a small bottle. in cases where I have let it sit as long as yours, I usually take that oil I capture, run it through a coffee filter and pour it back in (since oil is been getting very expensive lately!). After it runs and no more oil goes into the bottle, then I remove the hose, and it will just drip as designed again out the hole and (hopefully) get some oil on the drive chain when you ride. Great Video and great sound!
I run belt drives on my Pan and my Knuckle. So, the chain oiler is turned off. I just huff air unless there is a wetsumping issue. She didn't huff any out, but the crankcase had a lot to recirculate.

Nice video Mike. Say on a side note and sorry if this has already been addressed but what year is that front fender? Or is it aftermarket? either way, it is a beauty
Good video Mike. I have a beautiful 77 FLH that sat in a shed at the beach for about 8 years. This because of about 5 surgeries I had and then, she was just too far gone for Sunday riding. She's a beauty now. But, I left gasoline in the tanks those down years. I finally got all the crud out and kept it in a large baggie. It looks like the intestines of an alligator. Horrible residue!! Empty tanks or staybil is always best. My question for you is why did you choose the blacked out bottom to the cop windshield? Mine is from National Cycle and I always run a clear top and bottom for better viewing. I always wonder why other riders chose black though. I appreciate your time reading all this. Thanks again, great video!!
I’ve had the shields both ways on many bikes and I find the lower black on my Heritage sorta appealing and don’t feel I’m missing anything. Could be. Plus I got a bag there. But it’s nothing like the intrusiveness of a fairing. Not at all. The black is wearing, getting a blotchy look, and I find it even more attractive. Probably helps keep a lot of bright chrome reflection out of my vision as well.
@@yoso585 you know, like Mike, I also look over my windshield, on my K12GT as well. And I always thought that the black lower looked the best of all that I've seen. And I actually wondered if riders chose the black to block some chrome reflection. A ton of my stuff like the headlight nacelle is powder coated black so a black lower windshield would look fine on there. I appreciate the reply and my next lower will be black as well. Ride safe Brother.
Hello Mike Really enjoy your video's for there entertainment and instruction value. I have an 84 shovel FLH that has lost all the fork oil due to aging seals I assume. I have zero experience working on Harley forks and was wondering if you had ever done a segment on seal replacement on this model? If so, is there a way to reference this video? Thanks
If you go to our UA-cam Homepage. Just go to UA-cam and type in Pacific Mike. Then click on our logo of the yellow knucklehead motor. When our homepage comes up, click on the word "videos." We've had plenty of forks apart, but look for stuff on my light yellow Shovelhead.
Single point dist. would really make you happy. I've set a number of those dual point units. They work fine, very difficult to get them right, then they need attention too often.
When you say you opened the throttle all the way. Are you keeping it pinned during those three or so priming kicks? Maybe I haven’t been giving a enough fuel, I’ve been worried about flooding the carb
Yes, closed choke and wide open throttle. When cold, generally two or three kicks that way. Then, open the choke. Barely open the throttle. With timing retarded, and ignition switch on, kick it to life.
Kinda makes ya feel giddy as a teen age girl on prom night when they start on the first kick don't it ? Especially when there is an audience....ride safe.....
Am I correct in assuming Mike has non ethanol petro available and is always using it? And I wonder what he does when he’s on the road and it’s not available? Had to get the cat off my lap and go get my headphones to hear the bike correctly 😊
I have a 1981 FXE shovel head, when I push the start button, the starter turns her over, but won't stop until I disconnect the battery. Even if I try to start it, by jumping the solenoid. Scratching my head
The solenoid appears to be sticking, or it is the starter relay. Those pieces get fryed and stick. Also, be careful of low voltage in your battery. It can make your solenoid stick. It will just sit there and burn itself.
So all the oil goes from the tank into the bottom of the engine, and when you start it it throws it all out the breethervalve, is there an easy way to collect that oil, and if the tank is totaly empty the engine will run without oil so I have to put some oil in it first right.
Put a pan under the breather hose. Make sure you aren't empty. The oil will balance out as it is returned to the tank by the return side of the pump. Keep checking and later, you can add oil as necessary.
@@pacificmike9501 yeah I kinda extended the breatherhose so it comes on top of the rear chain so with normal use the litle oil that comes out of the hose lubricates my chain, have to change that unless I want 2 liters of oil on top of the chain now
Hey Mike quick question I have my evo on the engine stand I switched out the cam bearing and was going to get it to tdc but for some reason it won't stay at tdc it keeps rolling past it a little bit is this normal? I even creep up on it by hand but it won't stay just rolls past

✊🏻👍👌nice . We still can’t get ‘61 pan to start . Gots 6 volt system dual points and coil. Gonna switch to 12 volt system. Many thanks ✊🏻👍👌mike -
Single point dist. would really make you happy. I've set a number of those dual point units. They work fine, very difficult to get them right, then they need attention too often.
@@pacificmike9501 thank you mike . Yeah I think he’s looking at that now . 🙏🙏🙏✊🏻👍👌
I don't mean they're bad, just a little more involved than necessary.
@@pacificmike9501 🙏👌👍
The only kickstart bike l have is my little Kawasaki two-stroke but l think l have an inkling of how you feel. 😊
Yes, she is fun.
No spark control of coarse but same basic method for a 80ci cone shovel?
6:17
Burned a lot of what in Mexico?
LOL
Couldn't have been me or you. Must have been two other guys.
Impressive ! One kick after sitting that long. When are you getting back to the flatty build?
One thing at a time. Flathead screaming for money. She's getting it.
🙏👍🙂
mike you need to shoe the back of the hat, so we can see have it adjusts
Typical nylon punched strap.
😎🔧👍
Thank You.
Kinda makes ya feel giddy as a teen age girl on prom night when they start on the first kick don't it ? Especially when there is an audience....ride safe.....
Thank You. You too.
Mike, need help. Looking for a set of 80 ci shovelhead jugs. There was spacer plates under mine and one jug cracked.
Those plates are stroker plates. Figure out what's in that motor. S&S has tall cylinders.
Why would spacer plates be under the shovelhead jugs?
Stroker plates. Pistons travelling further than stock.
These modern day engineers deturmaned we don’t need a VENT in gas cans that’s what in find is the problem
True.
What are you running for a voltage regulator for that battery?
Cycle Electric generator and attached regulator as a complete charging system.
Am I correct in assuming Mike has non ethanol petro available and is always using it? And I wonder what he does when he’s on the road and it’s not available? Had to get the cat off my lap and go get my headphones to hear the bike correctly 😊
You're right.
👍🙂
I have a 1981 FXE shovel head, when I push the start button, the starter turns her over, but won't stop until I disconnect the battery. Even if I try to start it, by jumping the solenoid. Scratching my head
The solenoid appears to be sticking, or it is the starter relay. Those pieces get fryed and stick. Also, be careful of low voltage in your battery. It can make your solenoid stick. It will just sit there and burn itself.
What wood happpen if you run a pumpf4om drain hole to the oil tankwith manual swich to return oil as needed
Harley built an excellent system. I try to keep it working just as they planned it.
How does hot start differ from a cold start with a Linkert?
If the bike was just turned off, kick it with the throttle just cracked and the timing retarded. If it's been an hour, you may need a prime kick.
Just valve spring pressure. Makes it hard to set timing. You'll get it. Sometimes an extra pair of hands can do it.
I miss my petcock.
'nuff said.
Wise internet father, can you please inform us what octane gas is best to run on (kick only) shovelheads and panheads
Depends on how high the compression. But, in California, we all run 91.
@@pacificmike9501 8:1 compression. I live in Chicago where the weather is chilly most of the year. I suspect 87 low octane is better in cold weather. Mild weather - midgrade 91. And only on super hot days run premium 93.
Would you agree?
We don't have 93 out here. 91 is the most we get. It's what we run year 'round.
Guday again Mike, I wonder if you know of anywhere to get a 6 volt LED tail light globe for my 46, my mates tell me my brakelight aint too bright. I've looked all over the place here in Australia to no avail. Thanks in advance for any help. 👍
I don't know of any 6 volt LED lights. But, you could make sure that light is well grounded.
Is Amazon Available in your area. If so I would try there 👍🙂
@@cameramanmike2072 Thanks cameraman Mike, I will have a look there. 👍😊
I'll go rhythm
Thank You.
What's up with the Flathead?
Almost there. Sit tight. I want to build the entire motor without any long stops. That's just what's gonna happen.
