I love frieren's magic system because it literally works on the basis of 'will it into existence'
'Magic is a world of visualisation'-Frieren
And the thing is, it doesnt just apply to magic. This also applies to people and their dreams, goals and aspirations. Just like how Serie failed everyone who couldnt see themselves as a first class mage, you also cannot become who cannot see yourself becoming. And that, is the important take away from this magic system. If you can visualise it, then you can reach any goal.

Having not read the manga but watched the show, it seems that Stark’s warrior abilities work on the same principle as well, and may also draw on a sort of mana. Like when he was fighting the demon who copied move sets, there was a point where he mentally just stopped her attacks from killing him.

His fear of her came from the realization that she was a practitioner of the same style as his master. He overcame her when he realized that just because she had the same skills doesn't mean she has the same strength. And all his experiences when that style comes up until then was just his master. He thought the style made his master strong. What made his master strong was his dedication to self improvement. It made that dwarf a truly beastly presence. And Stark was already close to surpassing his master when they parted ways. Stark just didn't realize that at the time.

I just realized something about Ubel's magic.
She technically really could cut litteraly anything because if you think about it, it's technically possible to cut (or even just separate) molecules or DNA. Applying this to Ubel's magic could probably be possible which could make it one of the most powerful offensive magic.

It is true that it is based on visualization however, you still need to be able to understand the principles of how things work. For instance, Ubel was able to cut both Sense's hair and the unnamed first class mage since it was based on her logic that hair and clothes are meant to be cut. She sees through the magic properties of these materials and simplifies them into basic materials. My theory is that you still need to have a strong reasoning in order to successfully visualize. If you cast lightning magic for example, you need to ask yourself why would lightning strike in this area? What basis or proof can you come up with for it happen?
TLDR: Casting magic in Frieren is based on visualization however, a strong logical reasoning is still required for it happen.

Imagining it it be real.
Of course, understanding it through whatever science they have for magic helps them believe that they can create. That is why magic is abundant in that world. However, that same science also limited their own imagination by putting themselves in a box. Only those who truly understand their science, or better yet, lack thereof are the only ones to transcend their limits and be a 1st class mage. It's a wonderful way of creating making up their magic system.

I know this is just a short, but saying that Ubel can cut anything is very much wrong. She specifically cannot cut a lot of things, including the very basic defensive magic spell in the world, because she cannot imagine cutting it
But things that she can imagine being cut, clothes, hair and etc, she can cut with ease no matter how strong defensive magic it has, even though she is fully aware of a coat made uncuttable with magic being enchanted to be uncuttable. The fact it is cloth is enough for her to visualize it being cut
So yeah, it isn't that she can cut everything (kara no kyoukai style) but more that her weird viewpoint makes the rules her magic works by is different from the ones most everyone else have

It is interesting to see how obviously the author had to come up with a magic system midway through the series when it turned into a battle focused manga for that one arc.
At the start of the series, the whole idea of Frieren is that she’s out there *collecting spells,* a concept which clashes with the "just picture it brah" model that gets posited later on. It’s obvious you’re supposed to intuit that there are some esoteric rules to spell crafting and spell casting that just don’t need to get explained in the story and so, it can go on with the illusion of depth. Visualisation probably plays some role in spell casting but it’s not the be all and at all at the start.
However when it became time to turn it into some form of a battle system, I guess the author felt it needed more explanation and so it got simplified to something that operates under more simple rules that can be played with to create interesting scenarios that showcase mastery, skill, ingenuity, tactics, power etc.
It’s a process that happens in many stories like this so it’s always fun to see authors display their ingenuity like that.

I think magic works the same regardless of species. You need to precisely imagine what you want to happen. Elves pursue this by having a deep understanding of the subject matter. To the point they can just intuit what is neccessary to make the desired effect happen. Demons are more like they just have naturally good ability to intuit effects and this leads to a deep understanding of the subject matter. And humans just copy what the naturally gifted races do. Which is a pretty impressive talent in itself. Taking what others achieved through hardwork or natural ability and just running with it.

Perhaps? I don’t know about the series you’re referring to but a notable limitation in Frieren is that the inability to imagine it makes you unable to overcome it. Frieren once said “Can you imagine defeating a mage that can control water when it’s raining? At the very least, I can’t.”
And Frieren’s teacher’s teacher (Serie) asked Frieren’s teacher (Flamme) if she doubted in Serie’s ability to defeat the demon king. Flamme responded by saying “We will not be able to achieve that. After all, Master, you cannot visualize yourself living in a peaceful era, can you?”. Being able to imagine defeating your opponent is a necessary component.
It’s such a cool magic system. I know it’s probably not original, but I still find it fun.

Possible, but you’d have to have something or some concrete idea to hold onto in order to will it into being with magic. Like you’d have to truly understand the body and mind, or not understand any of it at all, in order to encompass that into a spell.
