Brilliant use of archive material, the whit walks were very similar to the ones we had in Manchester different days depending on which foot you put forward, many thanks. I particularly enjoyed the cinema sequence about half an hour in, I worked in film , mostly in telly but helped projectionists on occasions, not often you see the operations - women doing those jobs was unusual. The Royals' visit is also a gem. all that pomp!! I doubt you'd get so much reverence these days, mind you they'd probably send a minor Royal (pun intended). As to some of the comments below, when I used to go busking with my guitar and a pal on saxophone in Wigan playing jazz, we were very well received, it was harder going in Bolton.. like anywhere it's had its ups and downs, thankfully there's the Wigan Jazz Festival and live music in the town still.
This is very rare footage of Wigan, nice to see shots of Ashton too, didn't think they'd be anything like that. It's strange there's no footage of the Queen opening Heinz factory in Kitt Green, I would've thought there'd be some professional news film of this or at least some amateur footage but then again So much has changed & much for the worse I'm afraid. Those lovely walking days will never be like that again, too much traffic on the roads today.
Bring back the good 'ol days; the no 1 reasons - no CCTV in pubs, cafes, cinemas or pretty much every damn public place like you have today (what's all that about?), no asbos, chavs, Jeremy Kyle wannabes riff-raff, McDs culture full of the great unwashed and no 6 yr old kids coming out with the f word every second (heard some kids today coming out with it and they looked only 8 yrs old), not to mention a town that used to have character and not the clone of another town it is now (so called regeneration), no greedy puppet council that only think of themselves.
+john ebags Yeh I did see a couple of bag heads as soon as I got out the car, should promote Leigh as the new Knowsley Safari Park, just drive round it and for fucks sake don't open your door or feed the animals.

Why does Wigan Council not organize anything like this anymore would really help to give people a meaning in life
Cost, the money is better in their pockets (in their eyes)

Yeh the good old days, polio, other curable illnesses that halved your life expectancy, the good old days yes.
To be honest it's our fault. we are responsible for this generation.
Booody shame about those houses and cobbled streets, pure vandalism
Bygone Wigan, Leigh and district? The Town on Film? Which Town? Wigan? Leigh? or one of the others in The District maybe?
Only just discovered this. Fantastic.
They still dress like that in Leigh( the town that time forgot)
I went the other day, what a depressing shit hole it is.
