  • Tom Petty felt that this was one of the finest songs he'd ever written when he finished playing it on the piano & recording it on cassette alone in the wee hours of the morning back in 1985. The album cover presents a painting by Winslow Homer which the artist created right after The Civil War in 1865. It's entitled "The Veteran In A New Field". There's a discarded Union jacket & a canteen in the bottom right hand corner. I'm not paid by YT, so please like & subscribe. Thank you 💘 (Lyrics & more info below).

There's a southern accent, where I come from
The young 'uns call it country
    The Yankees call it dumb
I got my own way of talkin'
But everything is done, with a southern accent
    Where I come from
Now that drunk tank in Atlanta's
Just a motel room to me
Think I might go work Orlando
If them orange groves don't freeze
I got my own way of workin'
But everything is run, with a southern accent
    Where I come from
For just a minute there I was dreaming
For just a minute it was all so real
For just a minute she was standing there, with me
    There's a dream I keep having
Where my mama comes to me
Then kneels down over by the window
And says a prayer for me
I got my own way of prayin'
    But every one's begun
    With a southern accent
    Where I come from
I got my own way of livin'
    But everything gets done
    With a southern accent
    Where I come from

[TOM PETTY: I remember writing it well. It was around 4 am. Really, really late in the morning. Or early in the morning.
I was all alone in the studio, everybody had gone, and I was playing the piano. And boom, here’s this song. In F. On the piano. One of the best songs I ever wrote. It just appeared. I did it all real fast on the piano. And I had a cassette deck, and I remember I taped it on the cassette deck. And I couldn’t go to sleep, I was so excited about it. That was a lot of fun.
That was exciting, man. Everything was taped on cassette those days and I had a little cassette player that was on the piano. and luckily I just turned that on and got it all on the cassette. So we made the record the following day."] Paul Zollo (from The American Songwriter) 2020

Loved this one, since I have a Southern accent ! Dad being from Baltimore, he was always correcting my speech. I still live in the city I was born in. This was beautiful. Thanks.❤

I've never been further south than KY & VA. I don't think New Mexico counts! These are places I've lived. I have been in South Carolina for a tiny visit & Texas (The Gulf) for a vacation many years ago. People were more laid back in Kentucky than I'd ever felt anywhere up north or in the Midwest. I could use the milder climate down there as well! Winter depression hits many where I live. Take care ♥

@@steelyman08 I enjoy not having to deal with ice or snow. But there are always exceptions to the rule. Right now, we've already had low's in the 30, high 20 range, which is unusual for us this time of year. But high today is 78! My HVAC Unit is Gas heat, electric air. Gas heat can really dry one's skin. Constant battle. I'd rather it be either hot or cold. Turning air on during the day, and heat at night is a pain during the transition. Trying to dress warmer at night helps cut down on needing heat. I try to do my part if I'm able. My 1st long airplane ride was to Texas City, TX. Flew into Houston Intercontinental !! First husband left, and I flew there to see if the marriage was reconcilable, waste of money, but at least it wasn't my fault. I'm actually using ceiling fans in the day, instead of turning on A/C. My electric bill (gas & heat) went up $60/month for this year. I do budget billing so bill is the same for every month, then renews in Jan./Feb. each year. Either you owe them, or they owe you. Helps uncertainty. Still battling bad nightmares, going to see doc tomorrow, who said I have some PTSD regarding my older "embezzling" brother and 20-year estrangement. Was hoping that would go away when he died 3 years ago. You wouldn't believe the cruelty besides the financial loss. Hope you're doing better than me, my dear friend ! ❤

This track is a beautiful composition and celebrates one's linguistic cultural heritage. I'm fond of this song's melody and its lovely switch at the bridge. Pretty good that a song about American Southern accents captured the ear of a music fan in South East Asia. 😊❤
