Gwen Johnson, who was a member of the EFDSS, was the person responsible for the founding of Jockey. She was not impressed with the standard of Morris Dancing that she had seen and decided to create a young men’s side. This was in 1949. Gwen lived in Jockey Road, Sutton Coldfield and this was the inspiration for the club’s name. The rosettes that we wear on our kit are taken from the Sutton Rose motif and the Blue Baldricks are from the colour that is associated with the City of Birmingham where we are based.
We practise all year round at Highgate Baptist Church on Conybere Street, Birmingham. Our practise evening is Friday between 8:00pm and 10:30pm. After exerting ourselves in an energetic way we then usually retire to The Lamp Tavern on Barford Street to refresh our weary bodies.
