India’s first vertical-lift bridge - the Pamban Railway Bridge - facilitating the connection between the mainland and Rameswaram Island, is set to commence operations soon, as declared by Railway.
The new Pamban bridge, which is being constructed parallel to the old Pamban bridge by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited at an estimated cost of Rs 560 crore, is a breathtaking marvel.
The Pamban bridge is an essential connection between Rameswaram Island in the Gulf of Mannar and Mandapam. Train services were the only means of transportation between the two locations prior to the 1988 installation of a road bridge. On December 23, 2022, train services between Mandapam and Rameswaram Island were discontinued as a result of the 1913 rail bridge's closure for safety reasons.
