It is easy to criticize these players,as I have noted comments here and under other videos. In those days, training sessions before a match consisted of discussing tactics in an airport lounge right before. There was also very little money coming in from the sponsors they actually had. What was a real kicker for both the US and Canadian teams was the total lack of cooperation between the NASL and the two countries soccer federations. The people who ran the NASL had zero interest in the World Cup.None.The US federation, with no money to spend, had to settle for sub par managers like Alkitas Panagoulias and Lothar Osiander as part timers. All things considered, the guys who played for both national teams accomplished a great deal.Canada’s qualifying for Mexico ‘86 was amazing, and they actually did themselves proud.

Several of those guys, like Perry van der Beck and Arnie Mauser, could have played in the third or second tier of English football.A declining NASL and lack of attention(and appreciation) of those players skills lead to their fading into anonymity early.Sad.The players playing for the US now are standing on some very broad shoulders.

Canada and Mexico then played in the next round of qualifying in Honduras during Nov 81 and lost out to Honduras and El Salvador, 3rd and 4th respectively.

As an Englishman "we" would not have known anything about the U.S. and Canadian National teams trying to qualify ... all we would have known was the final outcome of the CONCACAF group That's All.
Looking at the standard of Football from the U.S. and Canadian National teams ... I would say the fifth tier of The English National League was in line with them.
I do not say it this with any amount of ridicule, as I have always wanted The World Game of FOOTBALL to grow and prosper in North America ... I am glad to see (Now) that it is Growing and Prospering and I say Come On North America, its Great to see you Join The Rest of Our World Game!

Surprisingly Mexico failed to qualify for the '82 finals in Spain. Lost out to Honduras and El Salvador. 😲
Canada qualified for their first and so far only World Cup in 1986 then, after a long absence the USA qualified for Italia 1990 and were in every World Cup until 2014.

@@TCDL11 remember canada's premiere qualification. they ended up in a group with france, hungary and u.s.s.r. i supported the soviet team. canada had a decent debut in the mundial, which for me was the most beautiful, as the greatest player of all the time played in it (in my opinion).

@@deaundrebondscheeks2 What You fail to accept is this ... The World Game of Football came first (your silly grid iron game stemmed from Rugby ... do some research) Our World Football governing body F.I.F.A. means Federation International FOOTBALL Associations and each Continental govening body (yours being CONCACAF, take a look at the meaning of it?) has the terminology of FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION or Association Football in it. 99 % of National governing bodys have the same Football Association or Association Football as The World Name, for The World Game is FOOTBALL ...Fact!.

@Welcome to Mars What you may not know is this ... Our World game of Football came to the U.S. & Canada in the late 1800s. People from Central/South America (via The British Empier) came into the U.S. & Canada playing Football along with Europeans as well. The game did not grow for many reosons; It was cosidered A foreign game and people wanted to become "American". At the same time The British brought the game of Rugby to the U.S. & Canadian Colleges, after 20 years or so You changed the rules of play and turned it into your Grid Iron game ... That was seen as an "American Game"
