Fun fact, it's a Japanese word seitan セイタン/生蛋, the kanji means raw+ the first kanji from the word protein 蛋白(tanpaku). It should be pronounced say-tawn lol. Hearing the short A used in Japanese words like yAkitori, teriyAki, yAkiniku (yaki meaning grilled) kills me everytime I hear it 😂😅
Thanks for the correction! This product is new to me and like the names your parent(s) gave you, I like to pronounce it correctly and honorably. I be sure to share the correct info.
When you write "say-tawn" I read that as /sɛ͡itɒːn/ whereas "セイタン" I would read as /sɛːtan/, am I missunderstanding what you mean by "say-tawn" or am I missing something else?
I've been making seitan from flour that needs using for nearly ten years. One thing I noticed was that you didn't wash all the starch out. The washing process for me would take hours as I would continue to wash the dough until the water is pretty much clear! This does make the gluten much harder to work with though, as it is stiff and doesn't want to be manipulated! 😂
I'd make it too but it looks pretty tricky and time-consuming. Making pizza dough is the most I've ever done with flour, I don't think I'd have the patience to go through this whole process like a masterchef. I'm only a low level cook lol
Ha! Not praying, but I do wish I had a partner that was vegan and had the patience to make these amazing creations as well. With 5 jobs and in school, I just don't have the energy.

It's an essential molecule found in every living plant and animal -- most abundantly in animals -- and something we've been eating and craving since the dawn of humanity." Therefore, if this chemical is solely responsible for the taste of meat, then my flour = meat equation is correct! Simply add Heme to the flour and... meat! #science
@@willmosley3215 except meat is the flesh of an animal. It has nothing to do with taste. It's the actual flesh of an animal. So no. A plant can never be meat. It can taste kind of like meat but never fully. but it can NEVER be animal flesh

Seitan is super cheap and easy to make. I make burgers, steaks, chicken, pork, etc. It's all about how you flavor it. The way this world is going and inflation...people will be thankful for knowing how to make meat alternatives. Packed with protein and no cholesterol.
This is just plants to meat. Cows have to eat the plants and turn it to meat and then we have to butcher it. The carnivores have to mimic the vegans power sir.
Too much work and cost, might as well buy vegan meat out there now. Vietnamese dried vegan meats sell very good prices, just soak in water then season them and cook as any meats, come in all sizes and shapes to make vegan meats at home. Some Chinese markets not sell them.

You guys don’t need to knead for 15 mins. It’s the time that is doing the work. Just fold it a few times and let it sit. Fold it every 10 mins or so and you have the same result with little to no work done. It’s called the “stretch and fold technique” often , look it up
I saw a guy at a Renfair once that made sandwiches with his feet....

Mark, have you tried not kneading it, and just resting the dough for a few hours covered? It autolyzes the dough, and makes it shreddy after cooking!
That sounds good! I can't knead anything with arthritic shoulders.

Excellent. Thanks for the info. 👍
Made this yesterday, and it was great tasting, but due to the amount of work and time I doubt I'll ever do it again. I think all said and done I was at just over 3 hours.... And as a working parent of two active boys, and all of their extra curricular activities, it just isn't feasible. Great video as always, thanks!
That's what i said takes up to much time
Ty for the update
I’m not a vegan or vegetarian, but I am a keen cook and have a vegan brother who I’ve wanted to try cooking something special for for a while, this might be it
You should try Yessica infante’s vegan carne asada
Cook a real steak for him and say it is gluten
Now the question is ... If you serve him this and tell him it's not actual meat, will he even believe you?🤣 It's so realistic
Thought the same, it would be a nice surprise!
Doesn't better than bullion contain concentrated beef broth?
Seitan went mainstream. So cool... I'm so glad that you experiment for us... You make our lives easier. That's for sure. Thank you. 🙏
Its wild right! Its so funny that it took tiktok to make it popular haha
Maybe tiktok made it popular with the trendites, but you, Mark and a few others like Miyoko Schinner have cemented it in the hearts and kitchens of serious eaters and home chefs.

I was going to make my seitan today. Looks like I'll be doing this.

Your cinematography and editing quality has improved so much! it's so professional now like a food network production.
My mom had this once in a Chinese restaurant and had to double check that they hadn't just given her chicken. It was delicious, too.
I grew up with this...my mom up to this day uses it. I'm from the Caribbean ❤.
This looks like it would make an amazing Broccoli and Beef!
MMMMM Yes!!!!
I was just thinking, i've never tried a vegan stake... i guess I'll try this?? Kinda scary how real it looks eeeek
Waiting for that episode where Mark is like "yeah, this is believable."
I love 😄 this guy, he knows how to make Vegetarians feel happy 😁💞....
Gross , eat it only if you're gonna run 26 1/2 mile
Never cease to amaze. Been watching you since last year, and I keep thinking "surely he's done everything". NOPE!! Drops another video. Keep it up man
This is insane! Next time I have nothing to do for an entire day, I’m all over this 😁 Great video as usual, man.
hahah Its definitely a process!! But so worth it! Luckily most of it is resting time, and though out the more you rest it the better it will be!
I know this is an old video but I finally got around to using it, and damn it turned out good, thank you so much
I'd make it too but it looks pretty tricky and time-consuming. Making pizza dough is the most I've ever done with flour, I don't think I'd have the patience to go through this whole process like a masterchef. I'm only a low level cook lol
After watching this video:
Me: God i don’t want to make this, please send me a partner that has the patience to! 🙏🙏
I think you should be praying to Seitan for that instead
@@mihailkiryakov7529lol.
Ha! Not praying, but I do wish I had a partner that was vegan and had the patience to make these amazing creations as well. With 5 jobs and in school, I just don't have the energy.

Just wanna let you know: This is the most complicated seitan recipe I have ever seen...(With a better result? Don't think so)

Best seitan I've ever seen .very good.
A steak from flour?!?! This is the work of seitan! I wanna try this!
steak is meat. This is flour...therefore it isnt steak
Flour = plant
Plant = kinda like grass
Grass = cow food
Cow = steak
Thus,
Flour = steak? Maybe.
@@willmosley3215 not how it works. flour is still a plant. STeak is still the meat of an animal
"Heme is what makes meat taste like meat. It's an essential molecule found in every living plant and animal -- most abundantly in animals -- and something we've been eating and craving since the dawn of humanity."
Therefore, if this chemical is solely responsible for the taste of meat, then my flour = meat equation is correct!
This is so cool. I had no idea it was this easy to make seitan. I am transitioning into becoming a vegetarian and this will help in the transition. I can't wait to experiment with flavor profiles.
Thats so awesome!! Have fun and remember if it doesnt work the first time, grind it up and make it a burger and try again! haha Seitan is a little tricky, ive messed up my own recipes a few times, but in the end it always comes out to something haha
Wow! ❤❤❤ will try For sure.looks so good !
For those ... cliche primitive questions about why some vegans are trying to imitate meat taste and texture, to keep it short, I am vegan not because i hated meat taste or texture , I'm vegan because i do not want to contribute to the torture and murder of alive sentient beings. Hope its clear.
At my grandfather's funeral, the Buddhist monks were eating vegetarian versions of our traditional cuisine. Among them was seitan. They invited me to try it, and I really liked it. It's incredible seeing it in all of these new contexts.
It's scary how much it looks like a real meat 😮 congrats for all the work you've done 🙂

Seitan is super cheap and easy to make. I make burgers, steaks, chicken, pork, etc. It's all about how you flavor it. The way this world is going and inflation...people will be thankful for knowing how to make meat alternatives. Packed with protein and no cholesterol.
I had this years ago, amazing meat analogue. Just wish there was a non-wheat flour capable of doing this.
Wheat can be tricky now a days
can rye and barley work?
Meats: Look what they have to do to mimic a fraction of our power

This is just plants to meat.
Cows have to eat the plants and turn it to meat and then we have to butcher it.
The carnivores have to mimic the vegans power sir.

Too much work and cost, might as well buy vegan meat out there now. Vietnamese dried vegan meats sell very good prices, just soak in water then season them and cook as any meats, come in all sizes and shapes to make vegan meats at home. Some Chinese markets not sell them.
