    I have a huge beautiful stash and feel absolutely zero guilt. Why? Because I am supporting small businesses and artisans, folks who are following their dreams, something I wish I was brave enough to do. I love that I can use my extra resources to support fiber artists, farmers, shop owners (so many women!) and get something beautiful in return. My stash brings me pure JOY!

    Buying yarn and using yarn are 2 totally different hobbies. You do not need to defend yourself when it comes to your stash. I’m pretty sure that 90% of your stash has some sort of memory associated with it. So just enjoy it for what is and also what it will become. Im excited to see where this year will Bering you on your knitting journey.

      that’s so true! a lot of the yarn have memories and travels attached to it and that’s wonderful but I feel very content with it right now and don’t want it to become overwhelming which is also why I’m planning to knit with it as I am ☺️ plus I was all bought with intentions and plans in mind and I do want them to come to life as well!

    Stash. It is such an individual thing. I have an extensive stash which I am very happy to have. I downsized my entire life, but the stash has come along (knitting, spinning, weaving and sewing). When I was young, I could only buy beautiful yarn if I found it in a deep sale bin. I would buy as much as I could in the lightest color I could find knowing that I could always over-dye it later. As I got older and my career gave me more disposable income, I continued buying beautiful yarns and tucking them away. I considered it a yarn-y retirement account. Now that I am retired, I don't have as much disposable income and the price of these yarns is only going up, so I am dipping into my stash heavily, rather than buying more. It is probable that I have achieved SABLE, but I am very grateful to my former self for having the forethought to consider what I might or might not be able to afford in my retirement. Anything leftover once I'm gone will be split up between my daughter and my best friend's daughter, who both knit, crochet and weave. Yes, some would look at it and consider it overconsumption. Isn't the saying, "What other people think of you is none of your business."? To everyone out there, take that saying to heart. No one knows your circumstances or motivation beside you. Don't worry about the judgy people.

    • @marleneknits
      @marleneknits  7 днів тому +1

      thank you so much for saying this!! I very much connect to your explanation for building a stash since I believe it has been influenced by my childhood and having grown up in somewhat poor circumstances as well 🫶🏼 and the saying is a really important thing to keep in mind for sure! (:

    So true Marlene! A stash is super personal. I am just getting into knitting, but I have been a sewer for about 16 years, and my collection of notions and fabric was huge. I have recently let go of so much to make way for my new style and projects that make me more excited. There is no point holding onto anything that doesn't excite you when it takes so much time to make things. Thanks for sharing your make 9 with us!

    So glad to have found your channel. For the past 3 years, I have kept a count of the projects I have completed. I have tried each subsequent year to better that count. The problem with my doing this was that I didn’t stop buying more yarn. I do like your idea of doing 9 out of my own stash, and will do that now. So happy to have a new goal, with using up my stash! And not buying more yarn!

    Love how you shared a make 9 from stash, your plans are really thought out. I made a make 9 for the autumn and have carried some of the projects over this year with wool from my stash. I personally have a love/dislike relationship with my stash; it’s good to knit with it but also nice to continue spontaneous creativity by adding in a few new skeins & projects too. I’m currently making the same scrappy blanket you are, not quite as far along. I’m always trying to find ways to use my scrappy leftovers. I love this video (all your videos - you’re my favorite UA-camr) but this one especially.
    I love your conversation around stash. I am at a point I feel a bit overwhelmed by my stash. It’s not as big as a lot of my yarn friends, BUT it is probably a couple of years worth of stash for me since I have a demanding full time job that means I don’t get to spend as much time knitting as I’d like. This year, I want to work from stash as much as possible. That said, 1) I am definitely a product knitter over process knitter so when I make something it really needs to be something I will love and want to wear rather than something to make just for fun, and 2) I think that due to poor math skills I have a lot of ALMOST garment quantities… so I know that in order to be able to use my stash AND have end products I really enjoy I will need to buy yarn lol.
    So my goal is mostly only buying small quantities of supplemental yarn to make patterns with what I already have. That said, since it’s going to be nearly impossible to find matching yarn… I think supplemental purchases mean this will be the year of color work and stripes for me 😂
    On the same note, I am going to Rhinebeck this year finally and since I know I will want to go crazy because that’s not something I can do every year, I want to make sure that I go in with some pattern plans to make sure I am buying with a product goal, getting the right yardage, and not be influenced to buy, buy, buy just because I can. I have no problem if I go crazy… I just want to make sure it’s with a plan and thought out crazy, not just because I can 😂
    I hope I will see you at Rhinebeck and can’t wait for all your 2025 videos. Your vlog content and podcasts are always so great and I can’t wait to follow along with all the beautiful things you make and how successful you are as a human and maker this year!

      I love how you’ve figured out all these things about your life and your making, I believe that’s incredibly valuable and I totally agree, going planned out crazy at rhinebeck is an option! I’ve already knit though half the yarn I bought there last year and I love all the plans that are still to come 🥰 I really hope to be back this year and wish you a fulfilling year of making - thanks so much for taking the time to watch and share your thoughts! 🧡✨

    I just cast on the sweet shop blanket as well. Great project to use up my random skeins. I also am working on saying no. I try to think of it this way when deciding "what are the things i want to say no to but say yes?". In terms of your stash I think you have quite a healthy approach to it. For someone who works at a yarn shop and does knitting content, it makes sense for you to have a big stash. You don't need to justify it. A stash is indeed a personal choice and up to each of us to decide. Personally I am a beginner knitter and it is a hobby for me. I don't have a stash really. Just leftover skeins. It's because I don't have the budget for it as well I change my mind a lot on the pattern and yarn choice: ) So I plan just for my next project and buy yarn specifically for that.

    I don’t like having a stash - at least I haven’t got a taste for it, yet. I prefer getting yarn for the next project I have in mind and then casting that on more or less immediately 🙂. Sometimes I get a souvenir yarn, but usually for something small, like socks. ☺️
    One reason is that I haven’t tried that many yarns yet and maybe one day I fall in love with one kind of yarn and then wouldn’t cherish my past stash anymore.

    I think everyone should have whatever stash makes them happy. Personally, I have a lot of yarn I got when I first started knitting and before I developed a knowledge of what I like. So I hope to de stash those things that I don’t love. Moving forward, I’m hoping to only have sweater quantities for projects I am ready to knit and knit through the couple I have that were lingering. I want to have a minimal stash of accessory yarn so I feel free to buy special yarn a festival or something and can use it without ignoring a bunch of other hat quantities. And I plan to continue to give myself mostly free rein to buy sock yarn. I typically keep a couple on the needles at all times and could not possibly have too many 😂 my goal is to make 24 pairs this year! Other knitting goals are to finish my blanket project from 2023 and a cardigan from summer 2024.

    Yarn stash is very personal. My family doesn’t understand my stash. But my mom only knits socks with one color or a self striping yarn. I do quite a bit of color work beanies and socks. So I have a lot of 1+ skeins of colors. I only have 2 sweater and 3 short sleeved tops quantity. I don’t think that’s too bad. Especially I got all of that during awesome sales. I did purge quite a bit. I decided to be honest with myself and went through what I had and tossed everything that I had for 2-5 years. Does it still speak to me? No? Toss it. I put it in my neighborhood group for free and it was gone in a few minutes. I still have a box less of yarn now and I have plans for sweaters and tops with what I have. But then honestly what yarn we have is no one’s business. It brings me joy.
