I am rather leaning to the idea that the image is the completed economic/political/religious system. The Scriptures describe the Beast, and the image is it's actual completeness, which represents it.
Worshiping on Sunday right now doesn’t give people the mark of the beast automatically. It is when people choose to worship on Sunday when Sunday worship is enforced with death threats and economic boycotts that a person receives the mark of the beast.
