The Battle of Shiroyama took place on 24 September 1877, in Kagoshima, Japan] It was the final battle of the Satsuma Rebellion, where the heavily outnumbered samurai under Saigō Takamori made their last stand against Imperial Japanese Army troops under the command of Generals Yamagata Aritomo and Kawamura Sumiyoshi. The battle culminated in the annihilation of Saigō's army as well as his death, marking the end of the Satsuma Rebellion
During the U.S.'s grueling advance through Italy in 1944, a Japanese-American company from the 442nd Infantry Regiment found themselves pinned down by German Machine gun fire. Out of ammunition and unable to call for fire, they fixed bayonets on their M1 rifles and charged out of their foxholes at the Germans screaming "BANZAI!" at the top of their lungs. Almost 60% of them were killed, but the German machine gun nests were captured and the Americans won the fight. Can't help but wonder if this historical event was going through their heads when it happened.

So for anyone who doesnt know what shiroyama is about and people who want to learn more here's i summary i made based on wikipedia: in 1877 The japanese government was beginning to change laws and policies towards a more imperial empire and some people (mostly traditional people) didnt like the idea of leaving the culture of samurais and other traditions in favor of a more imperial government so they revolted various times. The Satsuma rebellion is one of those (and the last) rebellion that lasted from 1877 january 29- September 25. The first major battle of the satsuma rebellion was the siege of kumamoto castle, a strong fort in the island of Kyushu. The rebels, led by Saigo Takamori, to capture Kumamoto on February 14. When they arrived the defenders opened fire on the rebels attempting to force themselves in. On february 22 the main rebel army arrived and attacked kumamoto head on, fighting continued in the night and the imperial forces fell back and the generals lost control for a bit. despite their sucesses the satsuma army failed to take the castle. after 2 more days of attack the rebels dug in around the castle and tried to starve the defenders in a siege. the situation was especially desperate becasue the defenders already had low supplies because of other recent rebellions and a warehouse fire that happend recently. On april 8 a force from kumamoto opened a hole in the sutsama lines and gained supplies that they needed. The imperial army arrived at kumamoto on april 12 outnumbering the rebels and putting them to flight. The battle of Tabaruzaka (which happened at the same time that the siege of kumamoto was happening) was a very bloody 8 day battle that started when an imperial force that was on their way to aid the defenders met a rebel force. the rebel force was outnumbered 6-1 (15,000 samurai vs 90,000 imperials) and after 6 days of fighting the rebels ran out of supplies and were forced to fight by sword and the imperial forces just gained supplies and men so after one more day of fighting the rebels fleed too kumamoto. After the failed siege and the battle of tabaruzaka the satsuma army retreated from kumamoto saigo made his men march to hitoyoshi. morale was very low and there was no strategy so the forces just dug in and waited for another wave of the imperial force however the imperials were out of supplies and fighting paused for several weeks. when the fighting began again saigo had to retreat to miyazaki leaving some samurai to apply guerilla tactics on the oncoming imperial force. On july 24 the imperial army forced saigo out of miyazaki and then out of Noboeka. while the rebels retreated the imperial forces catched up to them and encircled them from east and west, however the rebels cut a hole in the imperials and got to escape out of the encirclement. by August 17 the satsuma army had been striped from most of their modern firearms and artillery and they had about 3000 men left. The surviving rebels made a stance on Mount Enodake and were soon surounded. not wanting to let the rebels escape again, the general of the imperial army sent a force of about 20,000 that outnumbered the satsuma army 7-1. Most of the rebels at this point commit seppuku (kinda like suicide but with glory) or surrendered. Saigo escaped with his remaining 500 men to Kagoshima on september 1st and seized Shiroyama hill. Now we get to the main topic of the song: the battle of Shiroyama. Saigo was pushed to Shiroyama and he only has about 500 samurai left. the imperial army outnumbered them 60-1. the imperial forces didnt want to leave anything to chance so they brought a shit ton of men (30,000) to kill 500. the imperials also spent days building complex ditches and walls and other stuff to prevent escapes, plus they also brought 5 warships to be 100% sure that they couldnt escape. Saigo was sent a letter that offered surrender but he refused, after that The imperial generals ordered a full frontal attack on the samurai on September 24. by 6 am only 40 samurai were left and Saigo was mortally wounded by a bullet that hit his stomach. One of saigo's men, Beppu Shinsuke, noticed that Saigo had died and cut his head and hid it to show respect for him. After the death of saigo, the remaining samurai drew their swords and charged against the imperial force to their deaths. With these deaths the Satsuma rebellion ended. Quite the tale if you ask me. also sorry for the grammar mistakes i made a shit ton of them and im too lazy to fix them plus english isnt my first language. If i got my facts wrong tell me in the comments so i can fix them. Hope this helped :D
@@metricsystem1123 From the battle of Shiroyama? Officially only 30 imperials soldiers died but eye witness accounts claim that there was a melee and Saigo's line held for a "short" time. Considering imperial soldiers had zero training in close quarters combat it's safe to say that the Samurai inflicted more casualties than 30 men. However given how badly the samurai were outnumbered it isn't very likely that they managed to kill thousands, possibly hundreds assuming that a melee did occur. After scouring the internet for a few hours trying to find out how many died, I couldn't find decent source outside of the 30 imperial soldiers from Wikipedia. If you're asking about casualties of for the Satsuma Rebellion officially ~15,000 imperials died and rebels lost ~21,000. The imperial army strength for the campaign was around 227,000 and the rebels had around 25,000. For clarification casualties in this context includes wounded I couldn't find any credible information on how many actually died in the conflict. Last bit of clarification the term rebels isn't exactly accurate as Saigo wasn't rebelling against the Emperor post Meiji restoration, he supported the Emperor during the Boshin war and he also supported the reforms. Prior to the conflict Saigo was a senior member of the government who resigned due to a rejected plan to invade Korea (his plan was for him to go to Korea and act in such an insulting manner that the Koreans would kill him providing a casus belli to invade Korea). Due to rapid changes in Japanese society ex-samurai who were in the police and military forces had no role and many left with Saigo after he resigned. Saigo set up over 100 artillery schools in his home province that created a paramilitary force. These schools alarmed officials in Tokyo they sent men to investigate these schools who were captured and confessed under torture that they were sent to kill Saigo. The government responded with seizing weapons from an arsenal in Kagoshima (Saigo's hometown) which escalated the conflict. Ultimately fearing widespread rebellion as other parts of the country was sympathetic to Saigo and his mens' plight Meiji government sent the imperial army to stamp this out.
I want a game where you have to fight in the most famous last stands in history and Shiroyama is the climactic finale where you take out as many as you can and there’s a secret ending where you win and restore the samurai in Japan, really just a secret ending for each of them depending on if you win or lose.
@@mandast7455 no but the dlc fall of the samurai is during the war that preceded the rebellion that this last stand was a part of and thats as close as it gets.
Every song or person they reference in their songs usually mentions them. "White Death" is mentioned on Simo Hayha's page, "Winged Hussars" is mentioned on the page for the Battle of Vienna, "Rorke's Drift" is mentioned on the page for, well, Rorke's Drift, etc.
“I have dreamed of a unified Japan. Of a country strong and independent and modern. We have railroads and cannon, Western clothing. But we cannot forget who we are. Or where we come from.” - Emperor Meiji.
Until the Dawn they hold on, only 40 are left at the end. None alive, none survive. Shiroyama I dont know why but these lines always drive the tears into my eyes. Great song. Breathtaking band. Great topic. Great battle in history and the bravery of the 500 should never be forgotten.
This song is pretty sad when you think about it. It wasn't a slow transition of samurai being brought to a close like other cultural and battle driven things. It was a very sudden and violent one. Imagine those 500 people knowing they will die, but they will die living by the code of honor that's run through their history and blood for hundreds of years. The rest of the country has moved on, be it willingly or by force, but they will die as they lived. With honor, and in the face of battle.
samurai really didnt have much of a code anyways and werent particularly honorable they were more or less mercenary groups and would more or less do anything for their master. it was common for them to take bribes from other lords and betray their masters and friends and such lol ( dosent stop them from being badass though) from what i know samurai are akin to what a knight is in europe and are a step above peasants the ideal samurai is honorable and just but ofc many of them abused their powers to use them over peasants and such
Didn't you know that samurai are trained to want to die. In their eyes their life is sacrifice. They are told that they are already dead and their only goal is to fill out their honourable goals and the goals of their master. They don't want to die like pussies of old age. They want to die filling out their masters goals and litter the ground around them with as many mangled bodies as large as possible. Oh and they probably have big dicks as well
Really!? What you're talking about are Ronan. A lot of samurai abused their power and we're dickheads but they were literally expected to kill themselves if they ever lost a battle. And they weren't supposed to kill themselves quickly with a flintlock ball to the dome or hand themselves, they were supposed to stab themselves in the stomach then force it sideways to ensure optimal splatter. Also they we're supposed to do it voluntarily and OFFER to kill themselves if they ever do so much as fail the spelling bee. Does that look like not dedication!!?
i didn't say they weren't dedicated i said when you think about it they arent honorable at all, they may follow one man and do what he asks to a T but if that involves slaughtering innocent pesants regardless of how you look at it it isnt honorable or noble is it? samurai were no better then knights and knights werent very chivalrous at all ( unless to other nobles ) lol
does anybody ever noticed how this perfectly fits the sinking of the Yamato? "When the nee meets the old it always end the ancient ways the old always goes out in a blaze" It fits as to how the age of mighty battleships is over and aircraft carriers is to begin
I think about this, and the Pacific theatre, literally every time I hear this song. It works for the Satsuma rebellion but it also works for WWII era Japan so well.
What I love about this song is that although, out of all the heroes and armies Sabaton has written songs about the 500 Samurai were perhaps the most doomed to defeat, they got one of Sabaton's most triumphant and uplifting riffs. Although the Satsuma Rebellion waa never going to succeed this song makes it seem like a great victory for the cosmic forces of good that it happened at all. Reminding us that even in crushing and futile defeat, great acts of heroism will be remembered.
I visited Kagoshima this year. I went to Shiroyama & where Saigo finally laid rest. When im reading the history, this song was always playing in the back of my mind. It really captures the spirit of the samurai's last stand.
The Meme definitely didn't help lower the Hype for the Hussars, it made the Hype soar to new heights the likes of which have never been seen before! SO LET THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVE!
You die three times First when you exhale your last breath. Second when you are laid to rest Third when the last person says your name. Thanks to Sabaton the Samurai will be sung about until the end of time. They are immortal - like the unnamed Soldier of Heaven [War to End All Wars]
@@federicoamati9184 I don't know why the samurai had to die out... when matchlock came out they used them why not modern rifles as this battle and the war on terror has taught us is that close quarter combat is not dead.
Liam McKenna hahaha lol the samurais used the same bolt action rifles and preww artilleries as the imperial force they only revert back to their ancient weapons cuz they ran out off ammo they were never stupid enough to charge at guns without reasons
1877 500 samurai charged 30,000 imperial soldiers in a last stand to defend their honor led by Saigo Takamori whom many described as the last great samurai and hero of the Japanese people

necroplastful fucked it? Imperial Japan was the greatest Asian power to ever emerge. The British, who controlled the seas for decades were starting to sweat. America made imperial japan possible and then put an end to it.
Of course, while the old must give way to the new. Japan must never forget the words of Emperor Meiji. "We cannot forget who we are or where we come from." So happy that, to a degree, Japan still respects and honors the old ways/culture. Something the rest of us could and SHOULD learn

If you'd spent 20 years of your life locked in a cage by some nasty gang that took everything that was yours, destroyed your home, enslaved your family forced you to live in abject poverty, what would you do when you finally broke free? During the U.S.'s grueling advance through Italy in 1944, a Japanese-American company from the 442nd Infantry Regiment found themselves pinned down by German Machine gun fire. Out of ammunition and unable to call for fire, they fixed bayonets on their M1 rifles and charged out of their foxholes at the Germans screaming "BANZAI!" at the top of their lungs. Almost 60% of them were killed, but the German machine gun nests were captured and the Americans won the fight. Can't help but wonder if this historical event was going through their heads when it happened.

So for anyone who doesnt know what shiroyama is about and people who want to learn more here's i summary i made based on wikipedia:
in 1877 The japanese government was beginning to change laws and policies towards a more imperial empire and some people (mostly traditional people) didnt like the idea of leaving the culture of samurais and other traditions in favor of a more imperial government so they revolted various times.
Do you know how many imperial forces survived?
Wtg

That "Shiroyama" gives me the chills
Same, man
Same man, I cried like 40% of the song
All song give ne chills and make me want to cry, fr ;-;
With honor, and in the face of battle.
samurai really didnt have much of a code anyways and werent particularly honorable they were more or less mercenary groups and would more or less do anything for their master. it was common for them to take bribes from other lords and betray their masters and friends and such lol ( dosent stop them from being badass though) from what i know samurai are akin to what a knight is in europe and are a step above peasants the ideal samurai is honorable and just but ofc many of them abused their powers to use them over peasants and such
wasnt really excluding knights really i was just using them as a good comparison lol
Then the winged samurai arrived.
If that had happened all of the world would be Japan by now
I for one, welcome our new samussar overlords.

This is by far one of the most emotional songs Sabaton has made. It's a glorious and tragic story about tradition, the human condition and change.
Me and the boys when we are the last ones standing in dodgeball:
I love playing nerf wars
because i got a foam katana and i specailly love when i am the last one standing against my neighbourhood
Didn't people bitch that Blood of Bannockburn was too "different" and not in their normal style? And now people are bitching that this is just more of the same from previous albums?
people bitch no matter what tis the way of the world
Haha yup.
This!
Simple, people like complaining
I really love this song! Bannockburn was different, but that was also a good sobg. People have to realize that Sabaton has a distinct voice, you can easily recognize if it comes on the Radio. Just like I can easily notice Disturbed or Sevenfold because of their distinctive sound! :) This comment was a good one ^^^
Sabaton = History class on steroid !
Le chat Timbré fuck yeah it is
that's why i love their music im a history buff

Le chat Timbré my teacher said we could listen to music if it was appropriate, she tought history, heard the loudness thinking it was rap, she listens, now she has a fucking Cd Full of. Sabaton
That explains why my brain is punching out the math I learned to make room for Sabaton songs
Samurais are from japan
Uploader: Nuclear Blast Records
Japan: *Oh shit*
It feels awkward that Nuclear Blast records
Publishes a song talking about Japan
Hiroshyroyama?
lmao poor Japan
Not funny
Именно эта песня заставила заинтересоваться, что там вообще было в этой битве. Спасибо Sabaton за прекрасное переложение истории в песню.
