It would be cool to see you compare the compression boot to another recovery device such as a massage gun or electrostim device by using one on one leg and the other on the other leg.
@@oatmeal4life441 I was told you should Foam roll right after a work out bc your body understands it still as bruising vs foam rolling Prior to to loosen your muscles or foam rolling I might to stretch
Fully agree. The boot is a costly option, so many people like myself only use the cheaper massage gun option. Would love a video in the same vein as this one to see what the difference is.
I recently received the Normatec compression boots. My legs haven't felt this good in a long time and I'm near the end of a marathon training cycle. Even if they don't help me actually get faster they make me feel a lot better. Try some if you can. Then sell your plasma or whatever you have to do to pay for a set. :)
Cheers Mark great video. Being of similar age , it would be great to see a video about what your recovery protocol is with regards to diet and supplementation over that same period. Keep up the good work!
I've had Normatec before and they are amazing. I do wonder if you'd be willing to do the one legged experiment to see how foam rolling one leg would compare with the Myomaster leg in terms of DOMS.
Love the vids. This has already probably been said before but….. Repeat the experiment with same training parameters, but use boot on right leg instead.
MARK. Try the Nike Alpha fly. Same tech but wider platform, widely regarded as better for “larger” runners. also. Nick Bare wrote his sub 3 time on his vapours …. He’s a unit too !
Aware I’m very late to the party… The best way to test these without more participants would be repeated measurements, alternating legs. So use on a random leg after each workout (with good breaks between to return to baseline) and record relative discomfort (eg 0-3 scale) each time
Thank you - this has been helpful regarding figuring out that the Normatec compression gear needs further testing. I'll trial it on myself and my clients who'd like to try it. Thank you 🙌
Just got this. Did one leg to see if there is a difference. Most definitely, not only pain from the edema, but a visual difference between the two. I'm happy with this so far.
Great experiment! What a content to sacrifice one leg. May be include quantitative scale of how you feel? For example, scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the most sore in your entire life. Just to see the difference between the two sides if it's significant. And of course, it can be multiple variables, soreness, likelihood to train/rest, stiffness/morning stiffness, range of motion, etc.
Repeat the test more times, including both legs, until there's a larger sample size. Add an objective performance test for both legs for the day or days afterwards.
Thanks for telling us about your morning stiffness, that should go away once you hit your 50s. It's hard to "science it", but a "boot vs massage gun" comparison would be of interest. One on each leg, although the results are likely to not be significantly different enough to make good content.
Watching from Thailand! The humour in this and other videos got my sub! Would be great to see you go all out at something and rather than be above average be above awesome!! Which you are not far away - maybe CrossFit would suit? Enjoying watching your vids and thinking I’m fitter than I am as I flick now onto Netflix and tuck into my post 10k nutritional snickers bar whilst thinking I can run a 1:35 marathon easy …. Not! Keep the videos coming! Martin - living in Thailand!
Mark, great video, thx. I like your sense of humor. If you continue to use the compression it would be good to do another video after three months or longer. As these benefits could be temporary. Also I get the feeling that you are in a rush while talking, we got time mate, slow down and take a breath once in a while. 😉👍🏻
Actually, I'm loving the content. Had really wondered about those compression leg boots. I'm not competition ready, at the moment. But it's coming. Will definitely keep watching for more helpful content. Thanks once again! 👍🏾
I using a pair of cheaper ones over here right now these video's reminded me I had them ... so after rummaging about I foudn the boots without the power adapter *crap* ... found the power adapter and now ZIPTIED the two pieces together so it don't repeat ... yeah my cycling legs are 'really' feeling happy right now after a whole leg and then a sectional -_- ... these always make me want to pass out .... If I didn't have these cheapo's I would certainly be looking to buy a pair of these again because they are relaxing for sore legs in my mind
I just found out about them watching Neal Henderson training video/SYSTM. I want a pair. And you don't make me feel great that I only started back cycling 6 months ago and I am 67 years old. I just got up to 202 watts FTP. You are awesome and powerful. BTW great video! Thanks for the info.
I went with Rapid Reboot because (at least at the time of purchase) it had the highest compression capability. Got the full body set (sleeves for arms, legs and hip). I end up needing to wear a protective cup when I'm using the sleeve for my hips LOL
Great video, very entertaining! Not many UA-camrs make me laugh out loud! Cycling is my main thing, I ride 2-3 times a week. But I also do leg strength work to help protect my knackered knees. I find the doms horrific for 2-3 days after to the point I can hardly do anything except walk the dog! Any tips that don’t involve having to sell a child to fund. It wouldn’t worry me too much but the Mrs is pretty fond of the little blighters! Thanks
flipping love your videos. Got some boots, they are somewhere in a courier truck or warhouse atm. Your video settled my mind on whether it was a good decision or not. Thanks.
I bought the boots myself and the effect on recovery is similar with a hot bath. Even the sensation that you get at the end, when boot are decompressing is the same as the water drained and you feel your legs easy. It will not address hot spots, PVC pipe still remains the best for that. Recovery boots are especially good before bed, at night, and not after the workout. Studies show that any recovery aid just after the workout hinder the performance gain.
Thank you for the video. I am 48, and race triathlon and marathon. I do use a foam roller. Between a massage device like a theragun and normatec boots, which ones do you think are most beneficial for leg recovery? Thank you
Great video Mark, very entertaining. Everyone i know swears by their compression boots so i will side with you, bear in mind though my sample size is just 3 people.
Oooh I say Mark: @13:59 'the imbalance I feel *between* my legs' Imbalance - that might due to the 'pendulum effect'. I usually lash mine down before a run;) Then again, putting a boot on it might give me a bit more traction. BTW. Great vid. Now swap the legs over and run the test again:)
I would like to know if you train while you are sore or sick for exemple. I keep getting sick and I give up on training thoses days because I feel it's going to do more harm than good. but I would love your take on it.
Great video's as always.... Have to ask a year later - are you still using them after hard days or were they a fad for you? Sometimes I research things, get excited about the idea but in use don't continue to use them (foam rollers 😝) but because of the cost of these I'm second guessing myself on this purchase.
Great video as always and love the humour and attempt to test the boots “without bias”, but - and I hate to be that guy - even testing the boots on one leg and the other does not rule out placebo effect at all, which is why proper scientific experiments are conducted “double blind” whereas you (obviously) knew which leg you had used the boot on. Doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the video, but just as long as everyone aware its entertaining but does nothing to rule out placebo or other bias 😁 Entertaining content it is, science it is not 😛
I discuss this in my TRT videos - it's a bit complicated. Testosterone is on the banned list so if you are elite you need an exemption BEFORE you compete. If you are not elite you CAN compete BUT if tested you get the the chance to apply for an exemption retrospectively. In reality, people low down the rank are not getting tested. Can you imagine them pulling the guy in 10,000th place at the London Marathon and busting him over his medicinal use of a hormone? So basically, for me mucking about way down the field, I'm fine. If you think about it, over 7000 people ran Reading half marathon and hundreds of them beat me. Statistically, forget TRT - some of them would have been high on coke and some would have been bank robbers. 😂
Thanks for the content - it's good enough and funny enough that I knit to your videos on weekends. (Am I the only one?) For recovery, have you looked into palmar cooling? it would be interesting to see how it compares to compression. They are very scientific but also very approachable. Not as funny as you, but he has his moments (!).

A few of you suggested testing the compression boots by only using them on one leg - it seemed nuts at first until I realised it was genius 😂
