I think it's that he realized that the Qun IS more important than relationships, friendships, and his bros. Your choice sends him back to the old Qunari teachings, and away from becoming his own individualized person. So of course he would follow Qunari orders when the time came. He probably does feel bad about it, the way he did about the Chargers, but hey, you're the one that taught him that the Qun matters above all else.
I just replayed it guys, completely forgot to do his mission so the charges are alive and he was not expelled from the Kun aaaand he betrayed me. So yeah, guess that's the point. He probably won't betray you if you "save the charges" because he's not even in the plan, in that case...
Personal favorite in this one is Cole confirming that the Qunari (race) do have dragon's blood in them. It's also interesting because King Calenhad's entire family line from him down to Alastair also have dragon's blood in their veins. I wonder if it's from the same draconic bloodline...
ooooh now i gotta look that line up, is it the one where he says Bull's horns are not bull-horns but dragon-horns and he coulda called himself the Iron Dragon? or is it something else?

Cole is a little further along because of how he came to be physically in the real world. I can definitely agree with your assessment of Dagna. The only person more focused on their work (that I've seen) in Thedas is Sandal.
Thank you for posting this! Cole's banter with Iron Bull (and Solas) is some of the most heartwarming in the game, imo. In my first playthrough recently, my inquisitor was a dw rogue and he ended up having Cole, (Tal-Vashoth) Iron Bull, and Solas in his party almost always. Their banter was such a joy to listen to. I'm trying to change things up with my following playthroughs, but I miss that trio whenever they're not there. Even more so after doing the Hinterlands with them and seeing them approve of all these little acts of kindness that most other companions barely register, if at all. Cole brings out the best in Solas and Iron Bull, and the whole overall vibe is one of warmth and acceptance and understanding.
The thrown away idea of demon (spirit) interrogators is genuinely terrifying. That's like the whole *thing* with Cole. He's a spirit of compassion mixed with a sad, lonely, invisible boy, and he's an assassin. He's impeccable. Consistently nice; *choosing* to be nice, and when the best for most people is someone's demise, he disappears and dispatches them without anyone being the wiser. If people as a whole had not forgotten him, and there had been a chance for there to be rumours about him, people would have had much better reason to be terrified of the Inquisiton. Leliana as Spymaster is one thing, openly fighting side by side with a known Ben-Hassrath another, but having a spirit that can disappear and make you forget him as an assassin? Sorry Zevran, the Crows have nothing on Cole.

I returned to DAI after years and I find Cole outstanding, I love when he makes everyone uncomfortable by telling them their true thoughts and fears! Cole and Bull - pure gold, Bull and Casandra about borrowing her armor... o my God 😂😂😂😂
