No one in Iron Maiden is a Satanist. They are famous for writing songs about literary figures and historical events. From Wikipedia - "According to the song's writer, bassist and band-founder Steve Harris, it was inspired by a nightmare he had after watching the film Damien: Omen II, in addition to the poem Tam o' Shanter by Robert Burns.".
The meaning of the song is pretty clear, people can say poem this, and movie that, but it's very hard to misinterpret the lyrics, these people believe in Satan, the general public need to come to grips with the reality, and not offer up excuses for other peoples beliefs.
One-Eye yeah, and I also believe that Dance of Death may have some reference of the Dancing plague of 1518. I may be wrong, but if I'm right the song would only get more epic.
Sori is a Maiden fan and she knows it!! :) The song is just about a dream or nightmare and the dude that is having the dream becomes enthralled with all of it. The song was inspired after Steve Harris watched "The Omen". He had a nightmare and wrote the song the next day :)
"According to the song's writer, bassist and band-founder Steve Harris, it was inspired by a nightmare he had after watching the film Damien: Omen II,[1] in addition to the poem Tam o' Shanter by Robert Burns.[2]"
B Well The source of your quote is wrong mate. In the music video it even includes scenes from the Hammer movie of TDRO, and the lyrics clearly reference scenes from the book and film.
the quote is correct. The video may have pulled footage from a different film due to right issues. But Harris has stated on many occasions that the song was inspired by Damien.
Khellendross The quote is taken from Wikipedia! Anyone can log in and write whatever they want. I know the inspiration behind TNOTB because I've spoken about it with the man himself, on a few occasions.
Dude, totally! I've been suggesting the song on several occasions myself just like a few others like "Wasted Years" for another angle. The answer for another flawless Maiden anthem though should be "The Trooper". It's Rock'n'Roll and Heavy Metal on point. For catchy satanism though I'd recommend "Come to the Sabbath" by BLACK WIDOW and "In league with Satan" by VENOM. That'd be a nice pick up on the discussion, don't you think?
They’re not Satanic. They were playing on the General Dillusion of the Satanic rage of the 80’s. If you take this song seriously as Satanic, it’s silly.
Not much difference if your children are running round the house singing "666 the number of the beast", "come come come to the sabbath, come to the sabbath, Satan's there" or "Evil, in league with satan", innit?
Merkur Schröder - I don’t care if my kids do. They’re lyrics based on mythology. Who cares! Haha. I think it’s worse to teach your kids that mythology is real. Just sayin’...
Iron Maiden was well known for writing fictitious stories that revolve around a multitude of ideas. This song is about someone witnessing a satanic ritual and not knowing what to do about it. It was a time when it was more common to write stories for songs instead of personal experiences... it becomes more obvious should you choose to listen to more of their songs like “Powerslave”, “Somewhere in Time” or “Aces High”.
Did you guys listen/read the lyrics? The narrator stumbles upon a satanic ritual, is going to inform the law but gets hypnotized into joining the cult. The story is pretty straightforward.

Yeah, there's even the line "This can't go on, I must inform the law". I would not see a real satanic band singing that. It's like Alice Cooper's songs, they are made for fun. The devil is usualy the bad guy... cause he is! 90% of the bands with occult imagery and lyrics are not satanists anyway. It's just that you can't play that sort of music and sing about flowers and blue sky.
Now you have to react the Iron Maiden song Revelations which was on the album after this one. It was their answer to all crap that they received for this song.
Steve Harris wrote this one. He said he wrote it after having nightmares after watching a movie called The Omen. He kept the subject matter quiet for years so they wouldn't get sued, or have to pay royalties.
C'mon Vin. This is just a fun song with basically silly lyrics (in old-time horror movie style) about a guy who comes across a ritual and the protagonist thinks (and maybe) he's losing his mind. The verse (misquoted as it was) just tells us that a human will be able to recognize evil and even the beast, This is just fun power-Metal antics with scathing guitar solos and a solid bassline driving the whole thing.
My apologies. I am a fan since '79. They are pure heavy metal of a style that was later called that horribly named genre from the NWOBHM era. Sincere apologies to all for using that term.
I would say that Iron Maiden are the fathers (grandfathers?) of power metal. Helloween, the group that basically started the 'European power metal' scene, all they wanted to do was be the next Iron Maiden and tried to emulate Maiden's sound to some extent while not being a copy.
This song was influenced by the 1978 movie Damien: Omen II, which is about a 13-year-old Antichrist. It was written by the bass player Steve Harris, who explained: "Basically, this song is about a dream. It's not about devil worship."
You got it in one shot. Basically what you said, plus Iron Maiden literally making a song out of part of the book of revelations. People don't understand that metal is also highly influenced by folk music, ie telling legends and stories, etc. Iron Maiden is very much in that light.
Well yeah, just as most things on this planet are. The human body also consists of a larger portion of hydrogen and oxygen (aka regular old water), the point being?

This is the first Iron maiden song that i ever listened to and originally i had listened to it as part of the music player on the video game Tony Hawks Pro Skater 4 for the Playstation 2 and every time I hear this song it brings back many memories of having fun with that game.
Iron Maiden - Phantom of the Opera (1980, off their first release , transformative metal, their original lead singer, a longer song, based on the novel)
Nearly four decades later, Bruce Dickinson was still hitting the high notes - and piloting the band's commercial jet. Drummer Nicko McBrain said he was a committed Christian. Saw Maiden, .38 Special and Rainbow on a triple-bill in 1982 at Kalamazoo's Wing Stadium. Maiden brought Eddy the Cyclops on stage.
UP THE IRONS!! 🤘🤘 Bloody brilliant review as always. Longer Iron Maiden Vin challenge accepted: Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Empire of the Clouds, Dance of Death Debauchery - Demonslayer
Iron Maiden are anything but Satanic lol As a comment said previously this song is basically the product of the the founder and bassist Steve Harris having a nightmare after having watched Damien the Omen: II and reading a scary poem. The lyrics are basically about his questioning whether or not his dream is really happening on is it just that.....a dream. Iron Maiden is a very thematic Band that writes songs about events in history without any political or social bias. They also tell stories in their songs such as Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Can I Play with Madness. If you watch any of their live shows on YT you will see what they are all about live. They have built a global following for a reason since 1980.
Iron Maiden songs you NEED to do at some point Dance of Death When the Wild wind blows Pacshendale Aces High 2 minutes to midnight Powerslave Rime of the ancient mariner The Nomad Children of the Damned So many more
Now that Salty is there it seems unbalanced. I do believe a lava lamp on the right side of Sparky at the same height as Salty would complete the lit back centerpiece.
I know that Nicko Mc Brain is a christian and I think Dickinson is either an agnostic or atheist, don't know about the others, but I'm pretty sure none of them are satanists.
Nicko is the only one that has said he is a Christian and Steve and Bruce, while never confirming or denying any particular beliefs, have frequently talked about the follies of religion.
This song was influenced by the 1978 movie Damien: Omen II, which is about a 13-year-old Antichrist. It was written by Iron Maiden bass player Steve Harris who had a dream (nightmare) after seeing the movie. Steve Harris said "Basically, this song is about a dream. It's not about devil worship."
IRON MAIDEN:LIVE AFTER DEATH 1985-LONG BEACH CALIFORNIA: I saw them in Long Beach California where I lived at the time I’m in Santa Monica now but they played 4 nights from Thursday to Sunday and I was there all four nights in 1985. They filmed 🎥 the shows for what became the Live After Death cd/dvd! My favorite Bruce Dickinson moment: SCREAM FOR ME LONG BEACH…SCREAM FOR ME LONG BEACH…SCREAM FOR ME LONG BEACH ARENA!!! UP THE IRONS!!!😎😎😎🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Glad you found Maiden to be more to your liking on the second go around. Epic Iron Maiden song, clearly, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, which tells the tale of the poem from Samuel Taylor Coleridge. That song alone is about 30% of the reason I started playing the bass guitar.
They are not worshipping the devil but are rather describing someone who is worshipping the devil. Awesome video though guys, we need some more Iron Maiden! This time go from the songs of either Somewhere in Time or Seventh Son of A Seventh Son albums.
For fun, the song is based on a nightmare the bass blayer (Steve Harris) had. He quickly wrote a song about the nightmare, and the song went together quickly... The number of the song on the album is to place it first on the B side (it was obviously made for working well on vinyl). That said, the next song is Run To The Hills, a song about the treatment of the native americans at the hands of the europeans. Iron Maiden often sing about history and such.
Rime of the Ancient Mariner from Maiden's 1984 album "Powerslave" a little bit longer. It has 13 mins duration. It is based on Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem. I would like to see your reaction to this song.
Iron Maiden - Rime of the ancient mariner - flight 666 version. There you guys will be able to experience the live atmosphere of maiden's concerts. The band was on point! Bruce's vocal were amazing and the performance was just epic! That's the epic song you are asking for! Cheers from Brazil
This was merely what sold in the 1980's. Metal was huge. Every one of them are extremely talented at their instruments. Dickinson has an amazing range. Now days, they tour occasionally and Dickinson and McBrain spend their time piloting their own 727's around to soccer games. They worked the market, and became successful doing it. Good for them. You can't be an idiot and pilot your own 727 around the globe.
Haven't checked out a video in a month or so , but it's Maiden....all of their lyrics are pure story telling. They were heavily influenced by Jethro Tull and it shows in this regard.
LeBron Colbaugh Steve Harris, or the rest of the band ,have NEVER been reticent of being influenced by JT... know your band history. You realize they even did a cover of Cross Eyed Mary.
Dickinson and Harris have pretty much always mentioned Jethro Tull in the same breath as Deep Purple when it comes to their main influences. And listening to both bands there are quite noticeable similarities in song structures.
Around maiden mostly write songs based on books, movies, poems, or historical time piece. If you want great songs to react to, get "rime of the ancient mariner" "Powerslave" "22 accacia avenue" "The talisman" "book of souls".... there is so many actually. Such a great diverse and powerful band.
Been a Maiden fan for a while. They are not a satanic band. They have a lot of great songs. They have a lot of different songs that are stories. Try to find out a little about the bands and lyrics, but not too much, because I enjoy the reactions. Keep it up.
Iced Earth - Dante's Inferno One of the most epic songs ever. Great traditional heavy metal with a lot of amazing riffs and lead melodies. Not to mention Matt Barlow is one of the best metal vocalists of all time.
I think Stu does a fine job but I wish he had tried less to sound like Matt on that track and used more of harsh vocals he brought to the table from his time with Into Eternity. My guess is Jon (who seems pretty particular about things) didn't want him to deviate to far from how the song was originally done. But I think Matt does some really interesting things with his voice on that live version from Athens, almost taking on a death metal vocal style on a few lines of the song. It really enhances the overall feel of the song being a journey through hell.
Khellendross I agree. I like Stu but he does come off as a Matt clone at times, and yeah, Jon seems to run the show on how things sound. Hearing Stu do his own thing with his full range would make Iced Earth much better!
Greetings from Sweden, I love your reactions, and also this band. Iron Maiden is not a satanic band, the drummer is Christian, not sure about the others though. But anyway, their songs are often theatrical and they tell a story in most, many times from old books and movies or myths and legends, and their live performance are one of the best to be seen. A funny thing about the singer, Bruce Dickinson, is that he also is a children's book author, and on his solo albums he have covered a few psalms in a great way. You should really react to his version of "Jerusalem" on his solo album "The Chemical Wedding" album from 1998, and also to the Iron Maiden song "Revelations" on the "Piece of Mind" album from 1983. Thanks again for a great channel... Cheers...
Wanted to mention since it looks like no one else sees it this way in the comments. The song appears to show the protagonist go from merely an observer of the ritual, to being taken over by the evil it brings forth. It starts with him being confused and wanting to stop it somehow, then progresses to him confessing to feeling drawn to it, then finally speaking as if he is the evil itself, as if possessed. Hence in the end him saying he'll possess your body and make you burn.
Vin you reminded me of a story. Took girlfriend to Maiden concert when we were 16. Her mom read me the riot act about (if they do anything crazy you guys get outta there quick!) like they were gonna sacrifice a goat or something. As a 16 year old I knew the song was just a story but the adults got all weirded out about it.
When I think about the lyrics of this song it seems more like a warning not to get involved with the devil. The guy in the song is afraid of these dark things but he have to know what is going on. When he finds out he knows he must warn others but it is too late and he can't escape anymore. He is drawn in and becomes something else
Coincidence?🤔 I'm currently wearing a Maiden Number of the Beast hoodie and this video appeared, metal on guys from Australia 🤘🤘. Every Maiden album is a concept album BTW."The greatest trick the devil pulled was to convince the world he didn't exist."-Nick Fury.
Not every Maiden album is a true concept album. 7th Son is for sure, and some others might have some themes that carry through an album. But on Powerslave, there's no connection between Aces High, Powerslave, and Rime of the Ancient Mariner that I can see (or any of the other songs for that matter).
Rodney Payne no every maiden album is not a concept album, only a couple, pull your head out of your ass and quit making false statements, the hoodie must be a hipster fashion statement as it is obvious you know nothing about Maiden
Sori you had it right. Iron Maiden are a ripping band, they are serious musicians but dont take themselves too seriously like some of the metals bands that came later. Bruce the singer isnt a dummy - he is also a pilot that flies the band around the world in their 747-400. When he wrote the song lyrics he would of been going for a feel that grabs attention of the audience but not necessarily researched to the hilt. These days you would find them on the golf course when not working, not devil worshipping. Back in the day they would of been branded devil worshipers early on so they would of just played on that perception but anyone who listened to them knew it wasn't true. Vin this Iron Maiden guitar line up were know as a couple of the best in the day. Dave Murray is one of the smoothest guitar players of this era, you should check him out.
Iron Maiden epics? Some of my personal favorites: Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, The Nomad, Dance of Death, For the Greater Good of God, Empire of the Clouds I’d say check out the last one for their longest song at 18 minutes. But all of them listed and not listed are incredible
If you want an epic style song, the first that comes to mind is "Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner". My English teacher played it in class when we covered the poem, and that's fact! If you want something that's not as long, you can't go wrong with "Alexander The Great" or "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" either.

Somebody who does his research thank you
LOL
Hahaha, even Nicko is a born again christian.
The meaning of the song is pretty clear, people can say poem this, and movie that, but it's very hard to misinterpret the lyrics, these people believe in Satan, the general public need to come to grips with the reality, and not offer up excuses for other peoples beliefs.
Bruce’s ‘horror scream’ - one of the great examples of his vocal range which is very underrated.
Yes Number of the Best and Run to hills are two of there very best examples of that and probably my 2 favorite Iron Maiden songs
Isnt this song about a dream steve harris had, a recurring nightmare? not actual preaching at you and 'spreading evil'
Totally agree
Yes that is VERY correct.
Yeah apparently Steve Harris had a nightmare after watching Damien: Omen II
Ya, they don’t ever actually glorify evil in any way. They’re just story telling
One-Eye yeah, and I also believe that Dance of Death may have some reference of the Dancing plague of 1518. I may be wrong, but if I'm right the song would only get more epic.

Yep, there's your epic opus right there.
Adam Covers - Yeah, me too. I hope they do that one (complete with fireworks!).
Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were part of the new wave British Metal in those days
No, Judas Priest is a band from 1968. The New Wave is from 1978 more or less.
"Obviously this is a satanic band" jesus christ, I've never seen someone be so far off on his reactions
I was sure that was sarcasm. Unless this is one of the earliest Maiden reactions they did and were mistaken about them at the time.

It's about a nightmare Steve Harris had years ago. None of the band members are Satanic!!
Love how honest Sori is, no matter what. And you gotta love a woman who digs Pantera, Tool and Maiden.
She's a true metal mama for realz. She just doesn't know it yet.

Yes finally some more Maiden!
Rime Of The Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden is over 13 mins
Nearly four decades later, Bruce Dickinson was still hitting the high notes - and piloting the band's commercial jet. Drummer Nicko McBrain said he was a committed Christian. Saw Maiden, .38 Special and Rainbow on a triple-bill in 1982 at Kalamazoo's Wing Stadium. Maiden brought Eddy the Cyclops on stage.
You have to see Iron Maiden, the energy on stage and in the excited audiences they generate is incredible.
UP THE IRONS!! 🤘🤘
Bloody brilliant review as always.
Longer Iron Maiden Vin challenge accepted:
Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Empire of the Clouds, Dance of Death
Debauchery - Demonslayer
Iron Maiden - For the Greater Good of God.
Why would they do For the greater good of overly long garbage pseudoprog?
Ivan Gushkov Because it's awesome
My personal favourite from 'prog' Maiden is Brighter than a Thousand Suns, which has so much amazing wordplay. I wanna see if Vin gets them all.
Turb0 Flat4 I loved all the albums. When the Wild Wind Blows is one of my favourites
THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER... forget the lyrics, the music is a masterclass on heavy metal.
Signature Maiden Epic "Rime of the Ancient Mariner"
Iron Maiden songs you NEED to do at some point
Dance of Death
When the Wild wind blows
Pacshendale
Aces High
2 minutes to midnight
Powerslave
Rime of the ancient mariner
The Nomad
Children of the Damned
So many more
Pretty good list! When the wild wind blows really grew on me.
Freaking beautiful, Vin visibly disturbed, Sori with a gratification smirk !
Man, that bass was awesome!
Iron Maiden - Dance of Death live
More Maiden please!
Now that Salty is there it seems unbalanced. I do believe a lava lamp on the right side of Sparky at the same height as Salty would complete the lit back centerpiece.
A trinity of a sort lol
That was my exact thinking
im drunk again but i rewatch funny when sori declared she like him like a new dog..lol have fun god bless
Definitely the best reaction channel, pick killer metal songs. You two are alright in my book. Funny, cool and laid-back. Good work.
Thanks !
The members of iron maiden are Christian they are not satanic. None of them are. Ps awesome video
Well, they're not Christian, but they are not Satanists. Most of them are atheist, actually.
Only Nicko is a confirmed Christian.
Rae Gonzalez the drummer is Christian and I think Harris is too
I know that Nicko Mc Brain is a christian and I think Dickinson is either an agnostic or atheist, don't know about the others, but I'm pretty sure none of them are satanists.
IRON MAIDEN:LIVE AFTER DEATH 1985-LONG BEACH CALIFORNIA:
I saw them in Long Beach California where I lived at the time I’m in Santa Monica now but they played 4 nights from Thursday to Sunday and I was there all four nights in 1985.
I saw them on this tour with the Scorpions, great show! One of my buddies was actually scared! lol
22 Accesia Avenue!
They aren’t a satanic band, they just use the imagery for some of their lyrics
Haven't checked out a video in a month or so , but it's Maiden....all of their lyrics are pure story telling. They were heavily influenced by Jethro Tull and it shows in this regard.
TwinRavens Jethro Tull? Lmfao, what inspired them? The flute solos? Please
LeBron Colbaugh Steve Harris, or the rest of the band ,have NEVER been reticent of being influenced by JT... know your band history. You realize they even did a cover of Cross Eyed Mary.
When listening to Maiden think Hammer Films, horror stories, Lovecraft, Poe etc
Dickinson and Harris have pretty much always mentioned Jethro Tull in the same breath as Deep Purple when it comes to their main influences. And listening to both bands there are quite noticeable similarities in song structures.
Antares 8001 and bingo was his name-o🤘🤘🤘
Around maiden mostly write songs based on books, movies, poems, or historical time piece. If you want great songs to react to, get "rime of the ancient mariner" "Powerslave" "22 accacia avenue" "The talisman" "book of souls".... there is so many actually. Such a great diverse and powerful band.
"A picture in the dark" by "Eternal Storm" : eargasm guaranteed and lyrical masterpiece
Been a Maiden fan for a while. They are not a satanic band. They have a lot of great songs. They have a lot of different songs that are stories. Try to find out a little about the bands and lyrics, but not too much, because I enjoy the reactions. Keep it up.
Iced Earth - Dante's Inferno
One of the most epic songs ever. Great traditional heavy metal with a lot of amazing riffs and lead melodies. Not to mention Matt Barlow is one of the best metal vocalists of all time.
Alive in Athens version!
Khellendross that or the original studio version is fine with me. Just not the new version with Stu singing.
Nothing against Stu but this is naturally Matt's song!
They should react to it ;)
Greetings from Sweden, I love your reactions, and also this band. Cheers...
AWESOME Video... Great Song you guys picked... I'm a New Subscriber... Gotta catch up on all your Videos .... Great Job... AWESOME shirt...
Epic long Iron Maiden song = Rime of the acient mariner!!
he wrote this after watching damien the omen 2 in 77/78ish
LOL, Sori wanted fire insurance to avoid hell as a kid.
As a 16 year old I knew the song was just a story but the adults got all weirded out about it.
xD - that's a good one!
Rime of the Ancient Mariner is pretty epic listen to it off of Live after Death though. This is how I learned to play bass learning that album.
SORI you win this reaction.....this is a big camp fire song done very well ...it was fun and we want to relisten
ok vin win after28 mins......finding musicians hard as hell
When I think about the lyrics of this song it seems more like a warning not to get involved with the devil. The guy in the song is afraid of these dark things but he have to know what is going on. When he finds out he knows he must warn others but it is too late and he can't escape anymore. He is drawn in and becomes something else
Iron Maiden
Iron Maiden-the prisoner
Sori... right, as usual. Love ya, Vin.
The intro is spoken by none other than the great Vincent Price of Hammer house of horror 1960's/70's movie fame.
I was watching it with having the Number of the beast and Hallowed be thy name covers as posterflags on my wall. Coincidence? :D
No it's a sign from the metal Gods!🤘
Not every Maiden album is a true concept album. 7th Son is for sure, and some others might have some themes that carry through an album. But on Powerslave, there's no connection between Aces High, Powerslave, and Rime of the Ancient Mariner that I can see (or any of the other songs for that matter).
megadev what I meant was concepts through the albums,so I classify them as concept albums collectively through their catalogue(1st to latest album)
Small correction: the number of the beast was written and composed by Steve Harris by himself.
pretty much ALL of Maidens songs are written by Steve Harris (the bass player) (Steve writes basically all the music and lyrics...always has)
Definitely not all songs. Bruce and Adrian have written and co-written many classics (2 minutes to midnight, wasted years, etc.)
charles jones there are alot of songs that steve has not written. Get your facts straight before commenting
XAMS no that is not true.Adrian Smith co write the prisoner and 22 acacia avenue with harris.Gangland was cowritten with Clive Burr
Iron Maiden epics? Some of my personal favorites:
Rime of the Ancient Mariner,
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son,
The Nomad,
Dance of Death,
For the Greater Good of God,
Empire of the Clouds
I’d say check out the last one for their longest song at 18 minutes.
