Project: Combining Quadruped Robotics and 3D Radiation Mapping for Radiation Monitoring

Dominion Energy combined cutting-edge technologies to remotely perform radiation surveys and produce a 3D visualization of radiation conditions. This project stemmed from first working with Boston Dynamics to equip our Spot robot with a traditional radiation detector. Concurrently Surry’s HP was exploring emerging radiation surveying technology: Gamma Reality Inc.’s 3D radiation detector, LAMP. Finally, both technologies were combined during Surry’s fall 2022 outage to evaluate newly installed shielding. Dominion’s Spot robot was equipped with Lamp and deployed in containment to perform this survey while operators received minimal dose. The resulting never-before-seen visualization of radiation validated the shielding’s effectiveness.
