- Java sparrow or Padda oryzivora is a small, 15 cm long, song-like bird from the Estrildidae tribe. The Javanese sparrow has a black head, white cheeks and a large red beak. Adults have gray plumage, reddish-brown belly, pink legs and red circles around their eyes. Male and female birds are similar. Young birds are brown. Even though until 2023 there are now many different colors of Java sparrows, as in this video, these are all white java sparrows. And as far as I know, there are several java sparrows that have pastel colors. But all that between white, black and brown only. There is no (or maybe not yet) found java sparrow that has a red, yellow, blue or other color.
This bird is endemic to Indonesia and is found in nature in grassland forests, rice fields and cultivated lands on the islands of Java and Bali. Today, this species is recognized in many countries around the world as a pet bird. I often know that Japanese people actually like this bird as a pet.
in the wild the behavior of these birds likes to flock and quickly move around. The main food for this bird is grain or rice, as well as other grains, fruit and insects. As seen in this video, java sparrows (in Indonesia) can also eat fresh vegetables, here we often serve them fresh sprouts, lettuce, raw sweet corn and mustard greens. Sometimes we also serve other vegetables.

Poor Poor birds locked up like that with all bugs crawling around the food dishes at the start. This is NOT how to keep birds. Java Sparrows are intelligent even though they do not act it, they are much more clever than a budgie. These birds should be free flying indoors. I also take some out in a hand carry cage and let them see the world, taking them to woodlands, beaches, nature reserves, cafes, city centres and towns. Not fair when I see stuff like this. BIRD POO all up on the breeding boxes all across there food worktop also. The poor soceity finches aswell :(
In my opinion, this aviary looks pretty clean and the birds look happy and healthy. They are free flying because they have lots of room in this aviary, and lots of fresh greens. It's evident
this owner loves his or her birds.
White Javas can't survive in the wild; even white Pigeons are predator magnets, but they can still fly much faster than Javas and Society Finches.
No estrildid practices nest sanitation. They couldn't care less if there are droppings in their nests. Even the parents poop right inside their nest when incubating eggs and brooding babies. Have you ever inspected an active owl, eagle, or hawk nest?
Society Finches are descendants of White-Rumped Munias (Lonchura striata swinhoei) domesticated in China more than a millennium ago. They are now as incapable of surviving in the wild as Fantail Pigeons, Cornish Fowl, and Norwich Canaries.
These birds are given plenty of space for flying exercise and to prevent crowding. Javas are among the more aggressive munias (males even ritually peck at their mates after mating), but the aggression level here is LOWER than what you will see in flocks of feral Javas living free in Hawaii and elsewhere.
The worst cruelties I've seen inflicted on animals were by virtue signaling know-it-alls who are more interested in feeling good by trashing others instead of learning something about the animals they claim to be concerned about.
