  • Many thoroughbreds may face an unsettling future once their racing days are over. Which is why Judy Parker started an adopt-a-horse program in Florida, rescuing and caring for former race horses until they could find new homes. Correspondent Bill Geist reports. Many years ago I had the pleasure of riding a retired thoroughbred on a trail ride. He was a fine, gentle horse as and it was a great day of trail riding.

Does anyone know if she still does this? She is heaven sent for these beautiful horses! I thank you! Wish I had the room for another horse I’d take one in a heartbeat! ❤️❤️

It took some Googling, but they have a page on Manta, and it says they aren't accepting any more animal and it's harder to adopt out animals since the economic downturn in recent years and dwindling donations.

That’s understandable then, and very sad. Since 2008 everyone was hit hard and some of us just haven’t quite recovered yet. I say yet because I keep hoping for everyone including myself and family. Best wishes to you and this wonderful woman. ❤️❤️

Thank you so much for saving these resources. They are precious and they give their all for us and I wish that people would give back to them. They deserve it.

Just like human athletes, no one will care about them after they’re gone, even if they live in poverty for the rest of their lives.

I think she was way ahead of her time. The cost of a race horse should have built into it a retirement factor. A "trust fund" of sorts for the horses' future care.
