As for the window mounted unit, here's what I've seen other people do. Install Curtain tracks on the left and right side of the window, then slide sheets of see-through plexiglass about 10 inches tall into the slot, then push it up to the top. Then slide and other piece in and slide that one up. When the window area is filled, use wide clear packing tape to stick the pieces together, on both the front and back, to create a seal, so rain doesn't get in. Easy to take apart for the winter.

I have a 10,000 BTU portable in my bedroom. The noise doesn't bother me. I'd rather have the noise than have it too hot in my room. The white noise from the air conditioner can be quite soothing.

Agree on the white noise. When I worked 3rd shift, it was a definite plus. It would block out the outside noises of neighborhood kids/barking dogs/lawnmowers/etc during the day while i was sleeping.

portables are basically dehumidifiers with AC function and a way to exhaust heat. Older dehumidifiers would just heat up a room while drying.
To make a portable work well.
    1) best to buy a two hose unit to avoid sucking cold air out of your room.
    2) cycle the whole unit OFF every hour. Wait 30 minutes and then back on. They should be built this way, but you need to do it. If it has a memory (meaning it'll restart if unplugged), then an appliance timer should handle that like a light or water heater. This will keep even a one hose unit from vacuuming the house of cold air.
    3) shorten the hose by installing a neat dryer vent in the wall. The hose will then be only 12" to the outside and the unit installation will look much better.
    4) I find the unit itself doesn't get that warm, just the exhaust. You may insulate that hose with a simple wrap.
    5) if you have a one hose unit, consider where the extra air should come from and maybe crack a window or door from that direction, but close doors to hot rooms. You can retrofit a 2nd hose to a one hose model's intake screen, but you have to consider the diameter. It must be larger than the exhaust. I have old floor ductwork, so I just position the unit over that vent.
Window units are proven tech. Simple straight airflow over coils and the coils are outside. A 6000btu window unit cools as well as a 10000 portable. Simple physics. However window units are heavy, clumsy and dangerous if they fall. They always leak on the windows and they can be easily removed for a burglar to crawl in. The hose assembly allows for a window to be locked with a much smaller opening, or install the dryer vent.
Portable units are, well portable. You may easily move it to a bedroom in the evening and your office the next morning. Window units, that would be a pain, so you buy two and tend to leave them both on all day.
Also portable units today mix conventional AC compressors with evaporative cooling. That is a promising improvement to traditional AC (especially in dry areas), but a young idea so it'll be quirky.

John Doe and Fernbark, I can't agree so much. Then again I only live in a warm place, not terribly hot. My hose only gets semi-warm. But two suggestions are... First, prop the portable AC up to the window as physically close as possible (make sure to tie it in place using hooks and string!), then collapse the hose down to the minimal 1 ft length, minimizing the space the air would travel (also a collapsed hose is thicker). The other point is like someone said, wrap the hose with some special material to trap heat.

One can just open a hole on the bottom of the wall leading to the outside instead of using the window opening. Works great and the hose extends only a few inches.

Love my portable 10,000 BTU unit. I agree the double hose makes more sense isolating the cooling of the condensor to the outside where it should be without negative pressure. My single hose seems to work pretty well. I guess the various cracks leading to the outside are balanced out throughout my dwelling as I don't notice any warm spots etc. due to negative pressure. I will say the window units are more efficient but they are a burglars dream entry point.

2:38 My wall unit has the "energy saver" setting to shut off the fan when the compressor goes off and it's wonderful. Even with the vent closed, the fan seems to bring in a lot of heat and humidity, so shutting it of gives you a nice cool, quiet period, and I have no problem sleeping through the transitions. The temperature regulation is a little sloppier though, since the thermostat takes a little longer to sense room temperature changes while the fan it off. I still like it better that way.

Noise & bulk maybe defining factors for some, but my research indicates windowed units are less power hungry. My window unit may be loud, but it's in old window that rattles a bit. My window unit is 8,000 btu & my portable is 10,000 btu. In my personal experience between the two the windowed unit put out more cool air. So I think I'm going to return the portable and get a windowed unit since my current window ac is getting older. Last summer I took it out back and flushed the aluminum vents with a garden hose. Caution make sure electrical parts stay dry or are completely dry before plugging back in. I find the internal air filter for most window air conditioners to be lacking. I was able to augment it with a foam filter picked up at the local store. Point is if it moves air it's going to move more than air. Dust & dirt in the air can and will affect performance and shorten life span. Clean your vents on all your electronics. Air conditioners, computers, & so on. Speaking of vents ever look up at the vents in the local store? Ugh! I'm talking about wal-mart & walgreens. I don't have high expectations for wal-mart, but walgreens c'mon?!

I have 2 different particular portable ac/heat, and after owning and using those for 3 years, I just bought two window units. One of the portable's died, and I knew it was going to happen, wound up one week of 90°F heat for a week and a half. Uggh. Anyway, after installing my 2 window units and running those for a few days, my final thought is this …. Stay away from portable units unless it is an absolute must to have one.
    Here are my reasons why:
    1. Portable units do take up a lot of real estate as you stated.
    2. My units never fulfilled the claims made. 16,000 BTU's, hogwash!
    OR
    3. Portable's are just so darn inefficient because the unit creates heat inside the home and so does that exhaust tube. So it's battling itself to keep cool.
    4. I live in a humid environment, so emptying out the unit was more frequent than I anticipated, and that was a chore! Also, very inefficient because I had to open up the door to get the unit outside for the draining process which in turn allowed undesirable heat or cold depending on the season into my home.
    5. Much much noisier than my window units and decibel ratings for the portables were rated lower than my windows! Another bogus claim made by the manufacturer! My window units are much quieter. Reason for the unwanted noise is because all working parts are now inside the home.
    6. Portables use a lot of energy! Mine used around 11 amps and during the cooling process almost never shut off.
However, with all that said, under the circumstances, I had to buy portables to cool and heat my home. As much as I dreaded doing so, it worked out. The house that I bought a few years ago came with an HVAC unit that I did not feel comfortable using and to replace that unit with all the bells and whistles that I wanted would have cost me around $8,500.00 including installation when all was said and done. At the time, the house needed so much more work, I did not budget for an $8,500.00 heating and cooling solution, so a $1100.00 temporary solution seemed a little bit more feasible for my budget. Another incident that took place was that two houses located to one side of my house were abandoned houses and in severe neglect. The owner decided to have those houses demolished. I think I would have been extremely upset to watch two houses being demolished within a few feet of newly purchased window units. Window units draw air in from the outside into the home and the portable units blew air out. So nasty demolition air was not drawn into my home. So, it was a lucky call not to buy window units at that time.
A week or so ago, I decided on two Frigidaire 8000 BTU AC/Heat, one for each bedroom. Those utilize 7AMPS each and pull plenty of humidity out of the two rooms. So now cooling is distributed evenly in that section of my home. YAY! The past few nights have been the most peaceful nights of sleep that I have had since I've lived in my house. Another YAY! I purchased two brackets for my units, the name of the manufacturer is Top Shelf. The brackets work just fine for my type of window opening but doesn't work for all. So that was the uncertainty until I took the gamble, bought it and installed it. Another YAY!
I will be purchasing two more of those Frigidaire units for the other sections of my home knowing that those do function as the manufacturer claims. I live in the northern Florida region, so it is very rare that the temps go below 35°F, so heating will be done via heat pump again utilizing only 7 amps per unit. I purchased one air purifier manufactured by a company name Whynter to complete my system and the system works beautifully! The whole job will cost me around $3000.00 when all is said and done which is way less than an HVAC system. I am not sure if I will ever have an HVAC system installed if this solution works out over the next few years. More pro's about window units vs. an HVAC system: I can run a window unit off of a solar energy storage unit if need be in the event of an emergency. Try that with an HVAC, lol. An HVAC is one complete unit, and the old saying goes, two is one, one is none.
Thanks for sharing your input regarding the portable vs. window unit. I had to in addition include why HVAC might not be a good solution either.

I think that's more speculation. I have similar setup (different brand). My hose gets semi-warm, not hot, but I'm willing to guess that even very warm or above hose should not prove to be a "room heater". Maybe the exact, immediate space next to the hose, perhaps yes, but not further away. Keeping in mind that the ac unit itself basically does not get warm / hot, just the hose. But I do agree some about raising the unit and shortening / collapsing the hose, if such is even needed. My guess is that it won't be.

Nice video and a lot of good points. Nice that you have both types. Agreed that, for the portable, the hose takes a bit of room (mine seems smaller than yours), but that's a price I'm fine with. Does seem strange that when in fan mode that it still pumps outside -- that should be gotten rid of. And I agree that if the portable machine were to shut on again and off again it would wake some people up, so the constant noise is indeed probably better. My portable is also 8,000 btu like yours and I agree it has fair volume to it, but I agree and can state that the noise is VERY solid and smooth, and I have fallen asleep. A very small advantage is the portable allows you to move / angle it away from or to you, unlike the window unit, however really not much because as you said the hose is rather stiff. If you are a simple guy with only basic needs then a portable should be fine, but if you have specific needs or specific problems then you have to do some diligent homework. For a simple guy I'm fine with the portable, for now.

The big problem is that it is sucking all the air out of the room, so new air must come from somewhere, usually, hotter humid air from elsewhere in the house. It is essentially a cold air fan. These will not dehumidify the room. The dual hose concept is interesting. I have never seen those.

My experience was with a whiner 15,000 btu portable ac. That unit never amounted more than what a 5000 btu unit. My 10,000 btu window unit cools much better than the winter unit. I thought something was wrong because it never cooled well. I took it to get it looked at and was told these are over rated, the coil was not big enough to produce 15,000 btu s. Was told I was lucky to get 5,000 btu out of the portable. This was the dual hose unit. It was a lot of hose and it took up plenty of room. I never did it to cool well. The idea of using the portable was to keep from having a window unit. I finally put the window air back in, it does circles around the portable. Ended up putting the portable with the trash in hopes of someone taking it. I never again want to buy a portable. My option is these portables are way over rated. With the hoses on, you have to duct the hoses out the window. The window units cool much better than a portable. 15,000 btu would cool my living room, but the 15,000 btu portable falls way way short.

Portable ac are not only under oower and don't do thr job right, also uses a lot more energy than window Ac due to been running non stop. That portable under the newish ratting SACC(Seasonally Adjusted Cooling Capacity) ratting is probably only 4,000 BTU at best. One way to improve it is to modify it to a dual hose Tuns of videos on UA-cam on how to do that. Media has a DUO hose (2 hoses in one) running a smart inverter it's BTU and SACC rating are very close together. For window the Media U shaped is the most efficent and very quiet it's basically a split unit in one. Media manufactures about 90% of all window/portable air conditioner's in the world other brands just put there name one it.

Yes window units do work better and are more efficient. However, they pose security problems especially on the first floor. I got tired of pulling my unit in and out everytime I left the house. The portable dual hose unit I got is easy to secure with window locks and 1x2 cut to length and the window screen stays in place. I also purchased an extra alarm magnet and mounted it so the house alarm still works at the window if there is an attempted break in.

I'm converting a cargo trailer to an RV and both have cons and pros from what it sounds. I really don't want a window unit hanging out, but don't want the portable taking up so much real estate. The portable is more stealthy in that you could install dryer vents on the RV and I could live with that and you could line up the vents so that you could essentially have the portable almost flush mounted with the wall seeing as you would need a very short hose and I think even the double hose would be tolerable. What do you think with my idea? I would like some input seeing as once I cut my trailer there is no going back without major body work.

While both portable and window a/c units have their applications, When practical I'd always go for a window unit. Why?
Consider this. All a/c units work by simply moving heat out of the space to be cooled. While a window a/c is mounted with 90% of the machine outside the space to be cooled, a portable a/c is entirely inside the room to be cooled. The heat is "piped" outside similar to the exhaust of a clothes dryer. The further one has to move heat, the more energy will be consumed and the less efficient the unit will be.
This may explain why many people say that a 5000 BTU window unit cools as well as a much larger (10,000 or 12,000 BTU) portable unit. While a BTU is a BTU, it is the effective cooling that matters in this case.
One additional thing about portable a/c units is this. How portable are they in reality? One has to set up the venting to the outside, so it isn't simply a matter of putting wheels on the unit and moving it from room to room. (That is unless one installs venting in each room in advance.) I think the term portable is only slightly true. If one looks at how quickly a 5000 BTU window unit can be installed in a double hung window, the "Portable" units aren't really that much more portable. JMHO.
Still, both types have their uses...

    • @FernbarkFrist
      @FernbarkFrist 6 років тому

I think the window units are in general, better. But there are situations where you just can't install them. The portable ones are on wheels. If you are someone who can't lift a window unit into a window, the portable ones are easier to install.

  • @Joshua79C
    @Joshua79C 6 років тому

My sister has been using one if not two or more in her home due to window size to window unit dimension requirements, the only thing I dislike about them is the need to dump the water tanks a few times each day as it accumulates and the fact it intrudes into the living space which is fine for her since they are placed out of the way for the most part. But like I said her first and 'new' house is a post-remodel purchase and most windows are not window unit friendly.
As for me I got one useful window in my bedroom and dislike only being able to use a window unit since my space is already limited, let lone with either when I need to remove for winter storage in how old this place is as I pay rent to live here and have not much say or do for improvements needing to get done, I am forgoing putting my unit in this year since replacing the living room window unit fro a old GE 10k to a Frigidaire 12k along with another not as out of shape or old 6k GE the other room being plenty for the 750 sq foot duplex I am living in. And to further address my issues is the lack of insulation between the old uninsulated basement and my living areas let alone the basement old and out of code as it is with no insulating or proper doors it gets humid and warm down there.
I would move but the rent here is low enough compared to rent being Higher for other places and my credit history is not so wonderful as I would like either. A good decent cash injection in my life would allow me to make a deal with the landlord to stay here if I could just get said needed improvements done. Or if it was a more than enough financial increase for me I could just find or even build my own place on an existing property that is empty or a derelict structure to rebuild my way and then move into that needing no improving and would have a ductless ac multi zone system, but would keep the window ac units around for just in case.

A Window Unit will win every time because it coolers way better than a Portable AC unit and has the ability to cool an entire 1st floor of a two story home. I've grown up with nothing but Window units and I love them a heck of a lot better. Maybe I'm a little unbiased about it because I've used one for most of my life. Until I purchased my home and we now have a Split System A/C unit that does not cool the top portion of my home. Now, I'm searching for a Window Unit to cool the second half of my home because it gets HOT and HUMID in Sunny South Florida during the summer.

That's what I thought until I actually got a portable.
My window units tend to ice up the coil now and then which basically stops them from cooling - and then I have to shut them off to thaw. The portable has never done that.
I say portable, but when you get to the 12,000 BTU size its not really easy to move them around.

In fact, not only does it fail to cool as well as the window AC, it is too loud, so I'll be returning it. I mean, it's ridiculous how high I have to turn on my TV to hear the programming and I am 6 feet from the TV speakers.

No. That is the exhaust air duct. It takes air from inside the room and uses it to cool the condensor and then discards that same air to outside. But that air then needs replacement which will happen from outside air leaking into the house due to the "negative" pressure created in the house by the exhausting.

In Lost Wages... I mean Las Vegas,
we have central AC... But one member wants to set it at 78
The vent in her room seems to cool faster.
    I prefer 72.
Since I am receiving some ac in my room, I thought of adding a portable ac. It would have a running start by already being in a 78 degree room
If I added a window unit... with the outside temperature of 108... I would think it would have to work harder

Now im in an appt with no central air or any cooling things with just my portable ac, and it cant take my room down past 78 Fahrenheit. which is better then the 85 it would be sitting at but a window ac would be much better in my situation. yours the portable ac may work great.

Portable units are better and here's why: First off, if you only have say one window in your bedroom, then a window unit sucks, because you then NEVER have the option of just opening the window on a cooler night when you don't need the ac. Or if you for any reason need to get fresh air and exhaust air from in the room. Unless you want to go through the trouble of taking it out each time. Second, They get much more dirty and smelly over months because half the ac is always outside exposed to dirt, rain, car fumes, stinkbugs hiding inside it, and will eventually get rusty if you never take it out. And finally portable units can easily be transferred to another room where needed and it's easy and quick to take the hose out of the window for days you just want fresh air.

Stick with the window units if you can. From my own experience, the temp drops much quicker in each room compared to the PUs.

Don't utilize the thermostat on those junk single hose portables because they don't have an economy mode that turns off the fan when the compressor cycles off so while it's waiting for the set point to reenergize the compressor, it actually HEATS your house by continuing to draw in hot outside air . Instead, cool the room then turn it off when the compressor cycles off.

Bigger more powerful window ac units won't fit in many old house windows ( ones that are 15K BTU's or more with old vertical sliding windows you might have to hire a handyman to install it ) Also high powered 17K BTU's or above might not be compatible with many regular receptacles if they're 230V 20 amp rated.....You'll need to hire a electrician or handyman to install a dedicated circuit like for a washer/dryer or refrigerator they'll have a high amp plug.
