- In 1995 I was hired by Verve Records to create a video to promote Abbey Lincoln's new recording, "A Turtle's Dream". The album had already been recorded and Verve decided they had something special and wanted to promote it, an unusual move for a jazz label. I met with Abbey and suggested an approach; we would treat the music as if they were in rehearsal and working out which songs to record. She would talk about the songs she wrote as only she could. It would be informal, as if the viewer were invited in on the session. To save money, we recorded in her apartment, which added to the intimate feeling. Abbey wrote what she sang and felt every word of every song. She was a force. It was great to meet her and to spend time with the other musicians.
I felt privileged to be around such talent and have the opportunity to talk to them about their music. She was phenomenal. I was on a high for a week after being so immersed in her music.
Truly one of the giants. Perhaps my favorite jazz vocalist of all time.
I found out about Auntie Abbey watching “Nothing But a Man (1964).” I fell in-like with her in that movie. Then I fell in-love with her after watching “For Love of Ivy (1968). Then I venerated to her stylistic delivery through Jazz. Never be another like her🫶🏾🫡-ASÉ

Adore.........thank you Ms.Abbie.
What a Force of Nature she truly was, and Lives on. Never Born, Never Die Abbey.
One of the true icons of African American Classical Music, Aminata Moseka Abbey Lincoln gives me goose pimples each and every time I hear her voice, whether it's talking on the phone or singing anywhere, live, on a recording or in a video like this one. Thank you LaShonda Barnett for this memorable documentation of one of Earth's most loving characters.
A major talent in music, period.
A great, great woman and singer. I love her with all my heart.
Truly Abbey. Could watch this a thousand times.
Cannot think of the words to say. I think maybe, love.
Abbey connects special.people to special moments full of the spirits of the creation and real life.
A treasure being hidden. Amazing musician Abbey.
Beautiful and amazing person!
I first saw her in Nothing but a Man in the early 90's. I had no idea for years she was a singer. Since then I have soaked in her Jazz/Soul career with great joy. What a dear heart she has. Absolutely the best!
What a fortune. I love Abbey Lincoln.
I saw Abbey perform several times, and was fortunate to eventually get to know her a bit. Unlike some of these modern, self-important African-American pundits, Abbey was inclusive and she was kind. I miss her.
"African American pundits"? Wow...you didn't deserve to know Ms.Abby, lowclass.
