Stormlight Archive is the most epic fantasy series I've ever read, and has some of the biggest emotional roller coasters in any fantasy. The best part are the characters, though. For the first time ever, I've actually felt like they weren't characters in a book, but that they were actual, real people. That if they were to magically step out of the page and stand next to me, they would be whole, complicated, and as real as any person I've known. Not plot devices or stand-ins for a theme, but real people. Absolutely, without hesitation, can recommend.

Most singers at the start date of the mod are slaves, so only the group that call themselves "listeners" are a free people holding territory. Btw, you couldn't read as the first character because he's a man. Seeing someone who has no idea what the Stormlight Archives are about and getting so overwhelmed is so interesting and exciting. Honestly, if you have the time, read the book. If you don’t listen to the audiobook. I feel like it’s honestly worth it.
Hey @soul_tomato! I love Joe Abercrombie and GRRM but Brandon Sanderson was the author that first got me into Fantasy Novels. What sets the Way of Kings (Stormlight Archive) apart is that it’s a completely different world from our own and has a completely unique magic system, topography, races and more. Sanderson really excels at creating different and unique worlds. What you need to know about Way of Kings is that there’s a social hierarchy where people with light eye color are held in higher regard than other cultures in Roshan society. They all serve King Gavelar and he wants his vassals to acquire gems that absorb Stormlight but the native people of the Parshendi are resisting them. Each vassal is competing against the other to get these stones to gain favor from the king so they’re not exactly working together. Some characters have share blades which are magical swords that can cut anything apart, severing even the soul from the body. Some characters also have shardplate which is the only armor that can protect from shard blades. The first book opens with a mysterious assassin (with mysterious abilities) attempting to assasinate the King, for reasons unknown after a peace treaty has just been signed with the parshendi. I love Sanderson books but his tone is a lot lighter and more humorous than Abercrombie or GRRM. He also has pretty simple prose but his plots have lots of action and twist and turns that can lead to some really beautiful and profound moments. Hope this helps, love your channel 🫶🏻
I love the Stormlight Archive. It feels so fresh and original where fantasy tends to get stuck replicating Tolkien. (Plenty of exemptions though) Kaladin was one of the first fictional characters I related too, which caused me to figure out I had depression when I looked into why I related to him so much. Although Kaladin technically has PTSD and his depression is a symptom which is not the case for me. If you find the book too dense (in terms of length, it’s just a long book) I would recommend the audiobook, but I know many people have polarizing opinions on audiobooks.
"she's a singer so she can sing I guess" Watching you stumble through this mod not understanding any of the terminology was so much fun. For the record, the crab people race is called "singers" (or at least, thats what they call themselves, humanity calls them the "parshendi", or the "parshmen") The singer/listener names have super deep meaning that tie into huge secrets that come in later books so I won't talk more about them. Would super recommend this book series. Nobody does build up and payoff quite like Brandon Sanderson. Have you actually gotten into the series since this video was released?
Awesome to hear you mention Joe Abercrombie, I’m in love with his series atm. Can you imagine if a modding team decided to give it a go at bringing the series to ck3? It probably doesn’t fit as well as series such as LotR and GoT which have more of an emphasis on worldbuilding than the First Law series does but it’s a pipe dream of mine. @@Soul_Tomato Im one hour into the audiobook, so I cant really say but the power system seem awesome but the scale of everything just seems to large for me personally.
@@Sacressane the scale of the books are gigantic and it is a bit overwelming in the beginning but they do a really good job of explaining everything along the way of the first book
@@Soul_Tomato I know when you started the video you said you're an Abercrombie fan, I'm also an avid fantasy reader - The First Law is my favourite book series and Stormlight Archive is a very close second!
I would recommend The Stormlight Archives because Sanderson is a good worldbuilder and storyteller. Magic and science are intertwined in interesting ways, and the development of the world follows logical conclusions based on the environments of the world.
Joe Abercrombie is my favorite author but Sanderson and Stormlight Archive got me back into reading. I recommend reading them if you ever got time. They are big books so time to get through them can be hard. You've got to be realistic about these things!
Abercrombie is my favourite too. Sanderson is basically the opposite (but in a good way). Abercrombie does no world building, Sanderson is the greatest fantasy world builder since Tolkien (in my opinion). Abercrombie is an artist/poet trapped in a dutiful-craftsman's body. Sanderson is an obsessive genius tapping into the infinite mind of an unknowable god trapped in the body of a nerdy family-man.
I think the main strengths of Stormlight Archive is worldbuilding, likable characters, and big set piece moments. Its worldbuilding is almost scifi in its approach, but instead used to create what is my favorite ‘modern’ sci fi setting. A lot of its flora and fauna feel like something made for a specevo setting, because they all revolve around the storm cycle. Like a sun moon cycle, stormlight archive has a storm cycle where a massive storm routinely circles the planet and this affects everything. Most animals are crustaceans because that’s what can survive the storm, many plants can recede into the earth to protect themselves, and most cities are built with massive stormshields to protect them from it. It was hearing cool out of context details like those that first made me interested in the series. On the characters, I will say this. I don’t think they’re as good as Joe Abercrombie’s. But that’s a very high bar to clear, because Joe’s characters are my absolute favorite PoVs I’ve ever inhabited in a book. So they don’t quite meet that, but they are pretty good. The PoVs are generally quite likable, but they can also be quite conflicted. Sanderson likes to explore mental illness in his newer works and one of them is my favorite depiction of depression in fiction. There’s some very powerful moments in there that I think back to when I struggle. “You will be warm again”. Where both of these come together is in the big set piece moments. When these likable characters that you’ve spent so much time with in this world hit a point and everything changes. After Sanderson organically and patiently informs you as to the status quo, he then breaks it and it’s quite often monumental. And because you’re so well informed on what the world is and how it works, it really helps you go, “oh shit, this is a big deal”. And there’s usually more than one of these moments per book. So if those sound appealing I’d recommend Stormlight Archive. One final word, in my experience the actual writing is very easy reading even if there’s quite a lot of it. The writing and story is quite good, but it’s clearly meant for general audiences. I’m not exactly a normal reader, my preferred method used to be binge reading (until complications from illness made that more difficult) and for me despite its length Stormlight archive was very easy to binge. I had no trouble sitting myself down and reading a couple hundred pages at a time as I got swept away into the story.
While the characters are good if feel like Sanderson spends way to much time tearing them down. Like I just got sick of reading the books cause anytime Kaladin gets something nice bro has to get put down
@@ErenKruger-qx3dt I understand this perspective and its valid. But for me, I liked that because I think its very authentic to what depression is. In real life you don't have a major breakthrough, come to some big realization, and then your depression is just cured. In real life its not that straightforward. You go forward and you backwards. I've had moments in my life where I've had major breakthroughs, big realizations, that have helped me a lot, and I thought, 'Ah, I've done it. It's all good now, I've figured it out". And don't get me wrong, those breakthroughs and realizations have helped me a lot. I lean on what I learned from them to this day. But it didn't mean I never backslid or had a hard time again. So that's why I like that Kaladin still has hard times. It feels very relatable. That a hero of this magnitude struggles with many of the things I do, in an ongoing struggle. Because mental illnesses like chronic depression aren't ever really cured, you just learn or are given the tools to live with them. But that's just my perspective, I can understand why it could feel very tiring and, ironically, depressing to see him go through all that.
@@hvw2377 Oh don’t get me wrong I also love how depression is expressed in the book. At the start I really did enjoy Kaladin journey. My main issue is just that the story goes out of its way to screw him over. Like every other character gets what they want yet he never does. It’s just trying to see him try and fail threw no fault of his own
The books are definitely worth the read and are probably some of the better modern fantasy books out there. My issue with them is that the dialogue is weirdly proper for a lot of characters and it feels kind of crunchy compared to older fantasy series. That being said it’s a very rich world and is very internally consistent for lack of a better word.
I started reading the books a month ago which made me curious enough to try this mod. The mod itself is amazing, but I had to immediately stop playing it because I learned some really nasty spoilers almost immmediately.
@@Soul_Tomato Yeah, I might have hyper fixation adhd, I knew about it because one of HeyCara videos talks about it and I have the same problem with paradox games and other things. Probably people who scrolls youtube shorts for 6 hours have it and it's becoming more prevalent in the modern world.
One of my favorite worlds most in fantasy. Truly unique for todays standards and so well thought out. Laws of nature and evolution just work in brandons works
I love the Stormlight Archive but I haven't read the last book because I got exhausted by the number of PoVs. There are like 3-4 phenomenal ones, but you have to slog through a bunch of boring others.
Storm light archive is modern high fantasy. Abercrombie is grimdark. Rather different types if fantasy. In general Sanderson strengths are his world building, magic, and characters.
Gonna be real -- I'm a huge fan of both Abercrombie and Sanderson, but comparing Abercrombie to Sanderson is like comparing Game of Thrones to earlier Marvel movies in terms of the tones of each. Sanderson's writing ranges from mature but not too dark to straight up corny as hell.
@@Soul_Tomato In terms of keeping a consistently dark tone that fits the plots of his stories, I think Abercrombie is better. Sanderson is really good with world building in the Stormlight Archive (way of kings) and Mistborn, but the tone can be all over the place - one chapter it’ll be a flashback of the main character committing war crimes and the next chapter will be from the perspective of a 12 year old girl that reads like a Young Adult novel. It all boils down to how much sappy stuff you can tolerate with Sanderson’s books imo, because there’s more good than bad in his writing but the bad really sticks out. Never really had that issue with Abercrombie.
I'd say a better starting point for Sanderson is the mistborn trilogy. The Way of Kings is great but the books are VERY long and the series is currently unfinished whereas Mistborn era 1 is a complete trilogy
I've read only some of the books, so I am not playing in this mod, since it contains spoilers. I would advise you to read Way of Kings and check if this is something for you, and don't come back to the mod because of spoilers. Imho, the Way of Kings is the best book written by Brandon Sanderson, and I am not the only one who thinks that. The whole Stormlight Archive is his magnum opus, perhaps the best fantasy series of 2010-2020s, and if not the best, among the best. It's mindboggling how good it is. So, you can understand the mod only by reading the books, and you're spoiling the books by playing in this mod, not joking, being serious. Since Stormlight Archive is an experience, not any book series, I really urge you to at least give a try and read the first book. And then come back to the mod if you feel like it.
@@Soul_TomatoThe dev Tobbzn, got me into it in the early stages of the mod. I went through all 4 books in about a month or 2 and been waiting for about 4years for the last book in the arc. Lucky for you it’s releases this year so great time to read it.

Most of the books are centered around Alethkar, and the Kohlins so any of them, or the crab bois in the shattered plains. Most of the countries are around and mentioned in the books but not super elaborated upon until much later.
The mod is fucking amazing, but it lacks in two ways. First of all, as you noticed, it's pretty overwhelming. Also, the narrative content is easy to fall out of. Because of these two aspects, to me it feels unfinished and not that fun despite the great features and overall quality.

If it's lore accurate, Szeth would send you straight to perdition
Honestly love the mod, don't know anything about the way of kings but I am definitely enjoying my first family run.
WHAT?! I didn't knew that mod got patched to 1.12.5. Welp there goes the rest of my free time since I wanted to try that mod for a long time!
Just imagine a First Law mod, would be f-ing insane
I’d be rolling glokta just for the 99 intrigue and I don’t even like intrigue
Its high fantasy with dark themes, really goes into depth with the mental illness and PTSD.
I do like that a lot
I started reading the books a month ago which made me curious enough to try this mod. The mod itself is amazing, but I had to immediately stop playing it because I learned some really nasty spoilers almost immmediately.
"This is really something." 😂🎉
Why is Thrawn a recommended start for Jah Keved?
I read the books because of this mod, my first fantasy book series.
How long did that take you?
@@Soul_Tomato I don't read much, and I read it on and off, probably under a year. But the first book got me really hooked that I read it in one day 😅
@@Soul_Tomato I would feel bored, than played the mods and it reminds me to read the other books and the cycle continues 😅
@@azrulashraf00 isn’t it like 1.3k pages or something lol
@@Soul_Tomato Yeah, I might have hyper fixation adhd, I knew about it because one of HeyCara videos talks about it and I have the same problem with paradox games and other things. Probably people who scrolls youtube shorts for 6 hours have it and it's becoming more prevalent in the modern world.
One of my favorite worlds most in fantasy. Truly unique for todays standards and so well thought out. Laws of nature and evolution just work in brandons works
Interesting. Def pushing me in the to be read camp
new mod to download. i had seen it but didn't know the world. but with these new mechanics gotta give it a try.
Never been interested in CK but damn does my this look like a great mod inspired by my favorite story
I’ve heard good things about the mod from that aspect in the comments
I love the Stormlight Archive but I haven't read the last book because I got exhausted by the number of PoVs. There are like 3-4 phenomenal ones, but you have to slog through a bunch of boring others.
The payoff at the end is so good though!
@@polyphoniphilia I don't doubt it and will read the entire thing one day, but it is not this day.
Interesting. So you find Abercrombie more consistently good then?
Bruh watching you just bump into the lore willy nilly and understanding nothing was hilarious. I'd recommend the books for sure
Was hoping for that effect lol
warhammer fantasy mod? I'm waiting for him now
Indeed. It’s in work as far as I know
@@Soul_Tomato ccol
Play more watchman’s ease if you’re going to continue with oblivion music please! :D
Oh gotta add that to my mix
Totally forgot about this song. I’ll add it into my library now
Would HIGHLY recommend the books man.
i love the book
READ THE BOOKS i'm only on the 3rd book now but they're so so good
Yay! Do read the Way of Kings, but a fair warning, it’s long
I've read only some of the books, so I am not playing in this mod, since it contains spoilers. And then come back to the mod if you feel like it.
the skyrim/elder scrolls music threw me off 😂
Lol didn’t know what else to use. Coulda use some Nokstella from ER maybe
It's definitely high fantasy. I liked it, but it's no First Law. Got to be realistic.
Saw one thing for First Law, say it’s realistic.
Can someone explain to me why a mongolian grand admiral thrawn is a ruler in Jah Keved at 1:17 ?? 😂
Storm light archives book club???? I would totally watch your chapter by chapter reactions if you posted them or met up on discord to do so
I’m about 100 pages in so far
@@Soul_Tomato I am excited to see what characters you gravitate towards!
I cant find this mod on the paradox forum. Anyone know where i can find it
Steam is where I snagged it
iirc i tried this mod months ago and it's abandoned/discontinued? or has it been continued again by the modder?
I wouldn’t say it’s abandoned yet but from the intro note it does seem like it’s almost there
They added fishing to Ck3 wow
This game got games inside it
I secretly can read 💀
Don’t tell anyone else
Yup read the books they’re great 👍🏼
I may just do that!
@@Soul_TomatoThe dev Tobbzn, got me into it in the early stages of the mod. I went through all 4 books in about a month or 2 and been waiting for about 4years for the last book in the arc. Lucky for you it’s releases this year so great time to read it.
For those who've played the mod and read the books, will playing this spoil anything beyond WoK? I just finished WoK and am only about half way through WoR
quite a few people have commented it would. I've officially bought the first book however because of these comments haha.
Recommended starts?
Oh man I don’t know who anyone is in this mod haha. I’d have to do some lore diving
Most of the books are centered around Alethkar, and the Kohlins so any of them, or the crab bois in the shattered plains. Most of the countries are around and mentioned in the books but not super elaborated upon until much later.
You should read the books or have them read to you if you are an Alethi Male
Lol I’ll read them
The mod is fucking amazing, but it lacks in two ways. First of all, as you noticed, it's pretty overwhelming. Also, the narrative content is easy to fall out of. Because of these two aspects, to me it feels unfinished and not that fun despite the great features and overall quality.
What the hell I'm about to buy this book and wow, it's awesome. Will I get spoilers if I play this mod?😮😮😮😮
Honestly no idea but I played around a little after this and had no idea what was happening so I’d say read the first book and come back haha.
If you're at all worried I'd say just read books first, they are long though, about 1000 pages each I think. So far only 4, 5th is coming soon though.
🔥
:)
please read the books, you won't regret it
I started the first one today actually
Has it been updated?
I ran this on the current version just fine but I think it’s technically slightly out of date.
It's entertaining seeing someone who has no idea what is going on trying to reverse engineer the lore
I’m now reading the first book because of this video haha
Yuhhhh ❤
Brrrrt
I tried playing this and gave up because i jad absolutely no clue what was going on and the lore though im about to load up the game to tive it another go
I’m gonna have to read 4 whole books and then I’ll explain it to everyone in an hour long video for a mod for a single video game because that’s just who I am.
@@Soul_Tomato I'd be tempted to get them myself but I don't really have the patience to sit down and read a book through I might try but I'll probably get bored after a while also your lore videos are great the anbennar especially
its a very good read but it gets worse as it goes on imo. if youve read WoT then i think youd really like the books(Sanderson picked up where Jordan left of after kicking the bucket)
I’ve not read WoT but heard similarly that it’s kinda tediously long. I’m not a big fan of series in general so it would probably be a hard read for me
Wdym gets worse?
@@coogerlion honestly i cant quite put my finger on why i like each book less as the series goes. its something that ive talked to my dad about a lot and i just cant put the feeling into words. not saying that they become bad but book 1 and 2 are the best ezpz
@tylerlowrey5760 well I guess I can't fault that
@@Chemo2742I’m a really big fan of oathbringer
It's a bit much, lol.
The mod or the book?
=][ D Yes YES YES!! ITS TIME Y E S ! ! !
Oh my god Smily speaks for Way of Kings haha
@@Soul_Tomato :) Its A Cool Mod
Tried to get into it 4 years ago. Book was too boring for my taste, humour was very childish also lack of violence, too much cringe fighting scenes. Hated Shallan with my guts, didnt give a fuck about her chapters in book, i was allways interested in Szeth who was by far most interesting character, but still it didnt stop me from dropping whole book.
lol most people (on reddit) will tell you Sanderson is simply the greatest (and only) fantasy author in history. i think he's ok but his characters are dull and his magic is always overly contrived
Ooooh an interesting counter argument. I have a good friend who is a Sanderson die hard. He takes off work every time to read the new books.
I disagree he’s not the greatest but he has a niche that’s he’s fantastic at
@@Randlelikesdogs It's a subjective opinion & I think what he's good at is bad YMMV
