      This vehicle is not designed as a boat for open lakes or cruising up and down rivers.
      It Was designe to ford swamps, creeks, streams, rivers transporting engines who would establish a pontoon style temporary bridge to transport troops, machines, heavy equipment etc.
      In other words it was designed for short distance river crossing where no bridge is available as yet.
      The water had to be realativly calm as waves could easily capsize or swamp the vehicle.
      Used for it's intended purpose it was Extremely Effective for the German Forces of the Second World War against all allied forces.

    A little more planning on entry point may have been helpful. Using a boat ramp or making a ramp type of thing or some long planks to assist in going in and coming back out of the water was probably something the Germans would have done. Always scout the bed first too, check for sand, logs, trees, rocks, and concrete slabs hidden under the water.
    Glad to see the old girl get wet again, they were a brilliant design. A VW Beetle can also be made water worthy with a few modifications to the exhaust and ignition(mainly waterproofing it), with paddles on the wheels to propel instead of attaching propeller to the crank case. The weight distribution makes for good floatation on calm waters-but never attempt to cross rough water.

    I'd probably do a trial run to shake it out before the "first time in the water" video. No biggie. I can imagine the thought process behind the amphibian but at the speed it moves you'd be a sitting duck crossing even a small body of water. Had to say it. The videographer has the camera on horizon. That's a huge win over many UA-cam videos! Good on him. This would be a cool vehicle to own, especially if you wanted to negotiate swampy terrain but I'd rather have the lake and a small row boat in the middle of my 1500 acre property. I WANT THAT LAKE.

      These things with sink like rocks. Any kind of wake or wave they sink.

    • @pex_the_unalivedrunk6785
      @pex_the_unalivedrunk6785 6 років тому

      They were never intended for crossing the English Channel...they would have capsized in the rough waters. As a scouting vehicle, they were made to cross small streams, ponds, and flooded areas of low ground after the spring thaw.
      Many years ago someone tried to cross the English Channel in a specially prepared VW Beetle-which has similar weight distribution and is capable of floating....but he didn't make it. The waters were too rough, the waves too big, undertow too unpredictable, & the distance is just too great.

    Just curious, did you know how deep pond was? Contingency plans if it became stuck in pond? Thought, wow that’s gutsy, if it fails all that work & now it’s stuck , or sinking!

    • @zehnerdygamer3329
      @zehnerdygamer3329  5 років тому

      Not off hand for the depth. If it got stuck, there were other Schwimmers there, all the owners of which would have been more than happy to give us a tow. Mr. Pringle, as a matter of fact, had his Schwimmer down there.
