I had one in High school back in the 1980's . I ended up selling it when I joined the airforce a few years later . For years I regreted the decision. A little over 2 years ago I found one that was sitting in a shop since 1983, I bought and fully restored it right down to the crank. It is a lovely bike that I will be passing down to my grandkids. Oh , mine is a 73, first year for the reed valve.
Greetings from India!!!Amazing find and we have the RD over here as well but was a detuned version of what was sold in the states. From what I can see in the video I think you should get your carbs set again, clean the points, check the coil and change the spark plugs cause it sounds like the bike is stuttering and could be a jetting issue. Great find and ride safe Cheers 😄
You won at life getting this classy RD350. Mine is with the mech for the full restoration and it's been more than 2.5 years now. Waiting to ride mine ❤
Seriously? This bike means you pretty much own my entire list. This is really cool. I can't wait to hear your impressions of it once it's running right.
Back in the late 90s, I bought a well-used '75 RD350B from a co-worker. I trued, but could not get him under $100. :-D It went in a corner of the garage. Family, kids, college and health intervened. Last summer I rolled it out and began working on it. It was a college kid's rat bike. Wiseco pistons, chambers, K-Mart coils, S&W shocks. But, the pistons and liners were toast. SO, slowly rehabbing it. They are gutless below 4-5K, but then watch the front wheel.
My 1st road bike was the RD250 bought new in 1973 & of all the bikes i have owned since the RD is still my favourite. Biggest mistake i ever did was trade it in for a Honda CB750, what a truck in comparison it was. Good vid mate & i wish you all the best with your 350 version.
I bought my 74 rd350 in 1978. The best thing I ever did for it was put in an electronic ignition. Try to resist the urge to install flat bars or some cafe racer style handle bars, the standard bars are much more comfortable and easier to do wheelies with....and you will be doing wheelies. enjoy your RD man.
The R5 was a piston controlled 5-port engine. The RD350 was a seven-port reed-valve engine. Yamaha dubbed those "Torque Induction". The "cover" on the left side is metal because it is the 2-stroke oil injection tank. You did not regap the contact points after cleaning ! To check the oil-injection pump, remove the bleeder screw with the red washer on the side. Hold the throttle halfway open. With your forefinger on the other hand, rotate the plastic thumbwheel clockwise. Oil should come out of the bleeder hole, after any air is expelled. Replace the screw. Remove the banjo bolts that hold the injector lines to each cylinder and rotate the thumbwheel with the throttle halfway open. Oil should come out each. Replace banjo bolts. Stroke adjustment on the pump is done by adjusting the threaded collar on the cable housing. You are giving us a half-plucked duck in trying to get the bike riding. A good specimen of the RD350 like that needs more care and attention ! All the same it is yours. All the best ! Trinidad & Tobago. West Indies.
I mean I was literally trying the bare minimum to see if it would get down the road before I tore it apart. I’ll keep those things in mind for when I do.
Honestly I agree but everything I did shouldn’t damage the bike and i definitely kept that in mind. It was properly lubricated points were clean maybe not set 100% correctly which is again what the next video will be for. But that and carbs not giving proper fuel will not hurt the engine in short term just starting a little victory ride.
A great bike . I love them.A two stroke with oil injection is nice. My first bike was a 60's Yamaha 55 cc. That was before oil injection, so I had to premix oil and gas. I wanted an RD 400 for a long time, but never got one. The one you got is in excellent condition for it's age. You were fortunate.
I looked for a long time, and actually I had a couple nicer ones get away, but they were more expensive. But I still think this one is in great condition considering.
Took me over 8 years here in New England to find a 75 worth restoring. These are hard to find complete. Fenders, speedometers, and cylinder jugs are hardest parts to find. Put a vape cdi with the keyway cut in from HVC cycle on it and forget it. Everything else you can get off Yambits economy cycle or HVC.
My bike has been sitting since the 80s and it's seized up! I'm thinking about making a vid of the restoration! I have been working on and racing bikes since the seventies i am a 2 wheel dude lol
The problem we the RD-350, is the RD-400 exists 😂, my RD-400 is an absolute GEM !!! Geneva Green!!! It’s no H1500,or H2-750, but it’s an extremely well built bike!! Birth of the Banshee!!!
You have a beutiful 350 there, paint and chrome original. I can tell you, we can fix the motor but you try finding an original mudguard, die trying, these bikes were crashed and trashed. Now I have two 350LCs in the garage, my favorites. However an aircooled 350 was fast, 400 slightly more range. Now let me critisise. If I take a bike out of 10 year hibernation. Ultrasound clean the carbs. After that as you saw do the points. However in 10 years the last fill of the oil tank has filtered past the pump and is sitting in your crankcase. IF you got her to start she will run bad lumpy. Too much oil. Take the heads and barrels off flush the crankcase out with petrol. You restart and she will scream like a Thai Pornstar
The point of this video was not to really make it ridable but to start it and see what it will do. In the next update I have started to address the things you mentioned.
learning to do ? yha turn off the choke when warmed up. LoL Check the plugs tell tell ya what's up . Hay might even need to change out the Main Seals.( usually revving difficulties) Make sure the Main Jets are cleaned. Could even check compression .
Well I have a lot of ind-Japanese rx 100 do you want to exchange it with American specs Rd 350 ?? People are crazy for that bike here in India they can give you any where from 3lakhs toh 5 lakhs Indian rupees@@navscycles
Best part of the entire video was Dad helping out!!! That is what makes motorcycles so special!!!
We collect them together. That’s what it’s all about

That’s the plan. It’s probably a carb issue since it’s been sitting.
@@navscycles looking forward to see her back on the road 🤘🏽

Haha. I definitely am interested to see what it will feel like as well. Hopefully it will be sooner than later!

Yah I own a few cb750s definitely a much bigger bike sort of different style.

As much as I’d like to make it into a cafe. I’m going to leave it stock probably. Might do an exhaust but yah that’s about it. Thanks!
Good find bud. I got a 79 RD400F Daytona Special. When you get it running right your going to love it
Definitely was took a long time to get but I’m excited to have it running good again. Maybe one day I’ll add a 400 to the collection but who knows.

At least those are super easy to kick over. Get up around 8000 RPM and it will take off like a rocket. Of course, my memories are about 50 years old.

yah took me about 2-3 years to find one at the right price and condition. I am going to leave the points since it will not be a daily rider.
I bought mine new and still have it the bike looks identical to this one !

Top 5 favorite sounding bikes of all time.

Check your points again as well as the carbs
The orange goes crazy
Definitely one of my favorites for this bike
Should have checked for spark! Carburetors will have to be rebuilt!
The first thing I did was take it apart and check spark…
Also carbs are Already done. Update coming soon.
Do Not use gas with Ethanol!!!! I run WaWa/ non Ethanol VP-C12 mix 60/40
Will never start without a hot battery
Clean and gap the points. 1st job.
I grieve for that poor thing. Not much offence meant. Watch all of Seventies Metal's videos for the love of god.
You’re overreacting a bit. The bike is healthy and is getting maintenance needed for the next episode. This video didn’t damage the bike in anyway.
