The Decline of Solo...What Happened?

- When we think of disposable cups, we think of Solo. It hasn't exactly been one of the big headlines but there's been quite a bit happening to the company, and really all of the cup industry.

jermster17 same
jermster17 my grandmother does that to everything tinfoil paper plates ziplock bags i mean everything

so what? anything wrong with that?

It could still be considered somehow "sinful", but it definitely IS a waste of resources.
Solo really started to go into decline when his son went to the dark side causing things to fall apart with his wife...oh wait
bonecanoe86 Are you thinking of Mr Christie who makes good cookies? I think it was his son who kept a mistress locked in a room. Then he eventually forgot about her and she died. Now the building is owned by a university (Toronto) and her old room is purported to be haunted. As is much of the grounds. Very interesting to look into but not alone at night.
bonecanoe86 not sure of that's a force awakens reference or an old star wars EU reference...
EU > Disney Canon
MC Kappa absolutely
Heir to the empire > The force awakens
And I'm sure
Dark force rising > the last Jedi
And jaina+jacen+tahiri > Rey+kylo+poe
I only home
Jaina=Rey
And
Kylo=Jacen
That'd be cool as shit.
Han has a black wife whom Leia was furious about when they first met. He also would never in a million years take a lightsaber to the stomach and then just make a sad face before voluntarily falling to his death. Even if it was from his own child the last thing he would do before leaving consciousness would be to grab that fucker around his pencil neck and say, "I'm taking you down with me, you son of a bitch!" Unfortunately, he hasn't been in any Star Wars movies since the 80s and is unlikely to appear in one again because they aren't being made anymore.

We call the "Jazz design" cup the "Cafeteria" cup. lol
listamato literally 😂😂
True that. If you owned a mom n pop burger joint there is no way you're using them cups for your soft drink.
Nah that’s the 90s cup lol. But ya cafeteria cup works lol
Vaporwave cup
no the roller skate rink cup
the "Jazz Design" cup is something you would see stacked in a hospital or office building near the water dispenser
Man, you just triggered a memory from when I was like 5 or 6 years old and my parents had disposable Dixie cups with Dr. Suess characters on them in our bathroom. It's honestly scary how much stuff is buried deep inside your brain, and then some random thing triggers it and you instantly remember it...
Your just triggered my trigger. Its crazy how many comments are made to trigger a person.
Orangelo
Duh!
There are also disposable Dixie drinking cups with Disney, Mattel, Nickelodeon, Nintendo and greeting card characters (The Little Mermaid, Barbie, Lady LovelyLocks, Strawberry Shortcake, Sofia the First, Holly Hobbie, American Girl, Monster High, DuckTales, Kim Possible, High School Musical, Bear in the Big Blue House, Schoolhouse Rock, Peppermint Rose, Pokemon, Mario/Zelda, Darkwing Duck, Phineas & Ferb, iCarly, Victorious, Zoey 101, etc) as much as designs based on the Justice tween girls product brand (currently owned by Tween Brands)
Pixel Count You getting triggered off of his comment on getting triggered just triggered my trigger.
Gentle John yup
They had super hero ones too.
"Did the video turn out to be more interesting than you thought it would be?"
After watching a bunch of your videos, I've become quite confident that whatever video you decide to make will always be interesting.
My grandpa used to sing the "red solo cup" song all the time. So me and my grandma got one and filled it up with candies and sweets and gave it to him with a little note that said, "I filled up your red solo cup grandpa!". A few years later he passed away from lung cancer. I miss him but the red solo cup means a lot to me now. The best part of all of it was he still had that cup on his bedside table up until he died. I had it up until two years ago when my little sister (she is only 4, 2 now) stepped on it on accident. It broke my heart but at least I still have the memories. Sorry for this random comment I just wanted to remember and write about him for a second.
I find I hilarious that a topic so dry can be so fascinating lol
it wouldn't be so dry if you put something in that cup
Justin B Hm.
If it's dry, you need more beer.
denimadept How come you get more like's me.
It's beer. :-)
What? Red SOLO cups were in danger? The entire iPhone amplifier industry would collapse!

The portable speaker market would boom, however

I remember that zig zag 90s' cup. I used to call it the water cup because McDonald's used to give those to you if you wanted water.

I used to work for Sweetheart Cup (Which bought out "Lily Tulip...which bought out Fort Howard), which was bought by Solo Cup. I believe the plant you showed in this video was the plant I used to work in, which was in Springfield, Missouri (With the giant cup with a straw). After Solo bought out Sweetheart, Solo started systematically closing down the former Sweetheart plants.
Sweetheart plants were almost all "Union" plants. Workers earned a decent living wage, and were happy in their jobs, and very productive. Solo plants were NOT "Union" plants, and workers were not paid nearly as well as Sweetheart employees. It is my understanding that after Solo started closing the very productive Sweetheart plants and transferring that production to their own non-union plants, that they had difficulty in keeping up with production, had trouble with trying to manufacture the thermal Sweetheart Cup that you showed with the blue/green swirls on it. That cup was a styrofoam cup, and the production process was very complex, and workers who operated the foam extruders were highly skilled. It was one of the highest paying positions in the company (Aside from maintenance).
I think that Solo cut their own throat by firing all of us union workers, and then expecting their low paid/high turnover workers to be capable of operating the complex machinery that Sweetheart plants used in their production process.
I think that the Dart Container company already had been producing the thermal/styrofoam, but I don't think Solo had much experience at this manufacturing process.
Solo shut down the Springfield plant in 2011 and I lost my longtime job. Stupid fuckers.
Sorry to hear that. I used to live in SW Missouri and I remember the giant cup. As I mentioned in another post when they closed Springfield they switched Urbana to 24 hr production and the neighbors threw a fit. I wonder how long before Dart starts closing Solo plants? With all those mergers I suspect they have more capacity than they need even after closing the Sweetheart plants.
Justin LaMontagne, Yeah I was laid off the day before Thanksgiving in 2010. The plant stayed open until Feb 2011. I worked in an area called "PB's" and we made those little cups like the doctor gives you your pill in you know? McDonalds uses them too inside to put your ketchup or mustard in. Souffle cups. Anyway I had been there a little more than 10 years...all the overtime I wanted. There was a lot of oldtimers in my pkant too. One had been there since Nixon was president. It's a shame. I heard that a lot of our production went to Georgia, Chicago, and Canada. I could have kept my job if I wanted to move to Chicago, but I passed on that. Sure miss my excellent health insurance.
@Justin LaMontagne, In my opinion if our country would enforce the anti-trust laws mergers/acquisitions like this would not be happening. They help nobody except for the bankers. Yeah I had bluecross blue shield of Illinois and it was great. It paid 90/10 aand prescriptions were 5 bucks. I wasn't a M.A., but just a machine operator, but I did have the option of moving to Chicago, or Georgia.
You said something about Owing Mills Maryland. We had these orange/yellow.blue machines that came from there...we called them OM machines...for Owning Mills.
Solo was not doing well financially and Dart had to take them over. With Dart their products are more price accessible and the brand stays alive.
Thanks for providing the ‘real’ story.

Jazz cups? In Louisiana we called those blue stripe ones. "Dixie cups"
Dj Zeroblade Dixie is a different brand lol
Dixie is another cup company owned by Georgia-Pacific. Not that it couldn't just be a casual usage thing (like all facial tissue is "Kleenex", even when its not.)
altrag or how all soda down here is called "coke"
I just assumed plastic=Solo, paper=Dixie.
I always thought Dixie cups were the small ones people had in thier bathroom to use to rinse after you brush your teeth. They even had thier own dispenser........
I would think red is chosen because it stands out really well, so people can easily find their cups or easily find and throw out cups.
@SPOOK DeVILLE it stands out in the room, not from the other cups.
A Sharpie with name stands out on the red cups and not with the blue.
Yeah the blue is an eyesore and would blend too well in a back ground.
"Why red?"
This is typically a case when all kinds of deep and well though-out philosophies are brought up as possible reasons - then it turns out that the cups are red because when they started making the cups red was the cheapest paint... or the designer/owner was a 49ers fan... and then, as the sales figures were good, they just stuck with it ;)
A little fun fact. Apparently, red LEDs are actually the cheapest of the LED lights, that's why they're so commonly used. It's also why the Virtual Boy only used red lights.
@@ashblossomandjoyoussprung.9917 Never knew. Thanks ;)

They could have fixed it by running a 'World's series of Beer Pong" event. Just run that and have them pay an entry fee like the world series of poker and keep the majority of the profits. You can even get ESPN to give you money to play it lol.

in my humble opinion anyway
That sounds intriguing.
Absolute genius
I just watched a ten minute video about... Cups. Plastic... Cups
The Jazzy cups are paper though.
Me Llammo Ramo no, you're watching a video about a $10 BILLION segment of the global economy.
The cups are more exciting than the narrator lol
Izeya Nozzleton ...at 3am. Fml...
That's interesting. My local Taco Bell uses Sweetheart cups.
"People just glance at the selection and grab the one that's more appealing." Just a quick correction- you should have said:
"People just glance at the selection and grab the one that's the cheapest."
Price point can be part of an appeal, too.
daintykinz lol no. People grab what looks good to them, appeals to their emotions and is at face level. At least for shit like this.
And the most well known. The red solo cup seems to be very iconic in America, so it's natural that people just pick that. I've only seen them in movies and such, I don't think they're even sold in Finland (but I never buy disposable cups so I'm not sure).
People used to get Red Solo Cups because they were cheap. Now they're the most expensive choice out of all the other disposable cups in that same aisle. Pisses me off because I just want to have my cake and eat it too.
When I buy things price definitely comes into it but I'll pay a bit more if something looks nicer but not if the price difference is huge.
The Jazz cup is my favorite and the video was exactly what I wanted. Nobody simply talks about these cups and I'd always been curious.

I have a Dutch friend and every time I see him hes always giving out gifts of European candies and chocolates that you cant get in the US. Asked him what kind of only available in the US things he brought back to Europe with him. He said he was super excited about bringing back red Solo cups because everyone at home wanted to play party games like beer pong and flip cup with them like they see on American movies and TV. I had no idea red solo cups were such a uniquely American thing.
I clicked it because I trust you, Company Man, to deliver good and interesting content even if it's about disposable cups

Marvincent Acuña Lol.
I worked in a country nightclub. We put non-alcoholic drinks in red Solo cups. The mixed drinks went in clear plastic cups. We were all jacked up when that song came out.
The cups are red because red (psychologically) triggers stimulation, appetite, hunger, and attracts attention in the brains of the customer. That’s why a lot of food related companies like Jack in the Box, Macdonald’s, KFC, Burger King, Wendy’s, Pizza Hut, In N Out, Dominoes, Sonic, Dairy Queen, Arby’s, Chick Fil A, and more use red logos.
That Jazz design I called "Save By The Bell" design. Since the opening intro had the same wacky design around the cast names
Well when I say the title of the video I thought to myself, "Wait? When did Solo go out of business?!?"
Working in the finance/accounting industry myself, its fun to see the financials of these companies you touch on. Keep it up!

I’m no business genius but I’m having a hard time believing that “sweetheart cups” was actually worth $917 million. They must have really loved that saved by the bell squiggly design a whole lot.

😨 mindblown I just was drinking out of a sweetheart cup when I was watching this video.
Fun note. The blue cups were slightly smaller than the red ones so you could turn the blue upside down and the rim would lock into the rim of a red to make an instant drink shaker.
One cool thing about the original solo cup is that the different lines starting from the bottom were rough measurments of liquid that you could serve in them. The bottom most ring is around an ounce of liquor, the next is 5 ounces of wine, and the next is 12 ounces of beer.
I clicked on this because I do work for Dart. If employee moral is any indication of how well a company is doing, than Dart is doing a hell of a job. I've never seen a company with so many content people working for them, top to bottom.
Happy to hear that Lloyd.
Lloyd Wellington can you confirm if the lines on a traditional red solo cup are actually measurements? From what I understand, the very bottom one is basically a shot, the next one would be for a mixed drink/rocks drink, and then you have a 12oz bottled/can beer, then a pint. I mean, I know they help grip too, but they're placement is/was specific.
nasachusetts thanks!
I'm so glad I found your amazing channel !!!!!!!!!

0:46 I’ll never forget that pattern for as long as I live. When I would go anywhere (mostly hospitals and churches) there was an almost instant guarantee that a cup with that pattern on it would be there. It just appeals to you idk

I started working at Solo during the transition from Solo to Sweetheart around 2005/2006. That place was a mess. It was turmoil until Dart bought them out. Many of my coworkers had worked there for years when it was Sweetheart, and they all loved it. Once Solo took over, it was all downhill, which the video discussed how bad the merger was. I remember the two systems, two sets of orders, it was a mess. They ran through 3 CEOs in about 18 months shortly after I started. Solo never recovered.
Can you do a video on Yahoo?
Why? Yahoo is actually growing quite well as a subsidiary. In case you don't know what that means: they operate with little intervention from their parent company. It's simply a case of better competitors in combination with some questionable leadership decisions. Really would not make for a great video in my opinion.

Can you do a video on the Spirit Halloween store, it looks like a fascinating business model. From what I see on the streets a company that rents spaces month to month for only 3 or so months before Halloween then moves out once the season is over. Is that what's happening?
I remember college and one of the first things the RA told us was "put it in a cup" when referring to beer. If it wasn't obviously alcohol, he wasn't going to check. It's probably a big reason the solid red cups are so popular. That and they don't degrade from liquid the way paper cups do.
Apparently, Concerns over the Environment could have had alot to do with the Disposable Cups' Industries' loss of Profits as well.
We will never be happy when it comes to concerns over the environment, my parents remember when plastic came out, that they said that using paper was bad for the environment, because it requires trees to be cut down and recycling it is not enough, now a similar look is being turn on plastic, yes we can reuse, but disposable is still king in many areas, especially in the sanitary department as we all are seeing right now with this so call covid 19 pandemic.
Sweetheart teamed up with Huhtamaki to form Earthsheel in 1999. It utilized an old warehouse space in Owings Mills. A lot of money was spent to try to make biodegradable packaging for McDonalds, but ultimately, it flopped and was never able to be economically viable. It did make it into test markets though IIRC.

My dad worked for Sweetheart Cup for 31 years as a Field Service Engineer. I remember when he brought the new design cups home for the first time back in the early 90's. He would travel to the dairy/ice cream companies that used Sweetheart Cups machines to put product into the cups sweetheart made and would come home with huge boxes of ice cream products packed in dry ice. I grew up around the company and today most people don't even know who they were.
I think the red Solo cups are more popular than blue Solo cups mainly just because it's what people have become familiar with over the years. It's so recognizable. It could also be because the color red is brighter and stands out more than the color blue. You'd be more likely to notice the red cups than the blue cups, especially if you're doing quick shopping for a party. Also, I have heard of Dart. Their name is on the bottom of foam cups and sometimes even on plastic lids for the foam cups at certain restaurants.
There is actually a DART container factory in my hometown. Kinda hit close to home when you talked about it. The company is doing fine from what people in my town know, they hire quite frequently and most that work there say for a factory job it pays well and the conditions aren't terrible. Just a neat tidbit I'd like to add. Don't imagine them to go out anytime soon.

I've heard of Dart, they make all the styrofoam cups that we use for coffee in the break room where I work.
They must control most the cup/ lid industry, I see their logo on nearly every styrofoam cup I use.
I even remember my mom at some point buying coffee cups with lids that were made by dart as well.
Nice video, never thought I would care about a video about cups
Hey Company Man, can you do a video on the decline of PlayBoy Magazine?
The internet happened.
Big Bog you beat me to it
Internet porn. Hefner sleeping with women young enough to be his great grand daughters.
Legitimate lack of good interviews. Playboy's were some of the best in news
This takes me back as a little boy in the Early 2000s.. church gatherings, vacations and family reunions. Go to my great uncles house and he would have stacks of red cups next to the diet Pepsi. In my granddaddy's house..me and cousins would have plastic cups and we would have our names on it ,washed it and use it again..
Do some more with video game companies or car companies. Regardless of the video you do an amazing job man thank you for your triple A videos!
I haven't touched on either of those categories but likely will.
One company I think may be a good candidate for one of those videos would probably be Midway Games. A once famous arcade game company that is now just a memory.
Rock on man! I'll watch your content regardless it's very polished and well done. Even this video was so knowledgeable I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Agreed!
Sega does what Nintendon't; they almost go out of business because they treated both their own fans and the fans of other companies like shit. Case in point: insane TV commercials that encouraged Genesis fanboys to bully SNES gamers.
i didn't know the cup business was this vast and competitive. i also didn't know there was a cup business
I think you're in the majority.
+Company Man ur probably right which is fuckin sad because or how many of the same people would be the type to buy disposable cups on a regular basis. murica
Any other channel about a cup and my expectation would be low. Keep up the excellent work company man! These mini docs should be winning awards! Ty
Pretty neat video, and right around the time I started to notice the Jazz cup’s popularity too. There’s a restaurant near my house that uses those Jazz cups and I was pretty excited to see they were still around, as I thought they were just something from a long time ago that I would never see again.
