    Episode 24
    Bionic Commando is one of the most innovative games for the NES! It's an action platformer like Mega Man or Contra, but unlike those games, Bionic Commando has NO JUMP BUTTON! Instead the hero must grapple around the expertly designed levels with his Bionic Arm.
    This game started out in the arcade, but the underwent a major evolution when it was redesigned for the NES. The original arcade release was linear, while the NES game allowed players to choose their own paths.
    So how did this game go from a simple arcade game to an NES cult classic? How did localization shape the version that we got in North America and Europe? And what is Bionic Commando's legacy in Modern times? In today's episode we'll discover all of that!
    And then we'll dive deep into the game, where we will learn:
    * How to complete EVERY AREA in the game, even the optional ones!
    * Where to find EVERY ITEM and UPGRADE!
    * How to power up FAST so we'll be ready for any challenge!
    * Recommended EQUIPMENT for every level!
    * The simple strategy to NEVER RUN OUT of CONTINUES!
    * Secret SHORTCUTS to get through the most difficult levels!
    * Where to find EVERY WEAPON, even Super Joe's Machine Gun!
    * EASY strategies for defeating EVERY BOSS, including Master D's Albatross!
    * Exploitable GLITCHES... AND MORE!
    Thanks for watching!

    Why does this video have the most dislikes out of all the videos you have? I love you man, please don't stop doing videos. Not only is it great to watch you play, it is very well done and you work very hard to give us amazing quality content. Helps me fall asleep too, and the puppy intro is already iconic to me. Trolls and kids that don't know any better probably. If it's not a call of duty walk through they give it a dislike. The NES doesn't have super awesome graphics so they give it a dislike. Almost guaranteed that it's kids that don't even know what they're disliking lol.

    You've really got something here with this channel. Even if the UA-cam algorithm hasn't caught on to it yet, please don't stop what you're doing. No one else is doing laid-back yet informative deep dives like this. Your videos are great to learn from and also great to just watch when you want to zone out.
    You're like the Bob Ross of NES games. Calm and friendly while also educating about mastery if people want to up their game. Or if they just want to watch you paint a pretty picture. Whatever works for them at the moment. Whaaaaatever. Happy little clouds.
    Request: Please do Wizards & Warriors 1 for NES next.

    • @UCanBeatVideoGames
      @UCanBeatVideoGames  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks so much, Bryan! I love Bob Ross' style, so that's really great to hear!
      Nobody requested Wizards and Warriors yet, but I've had it starred on my list as a game I wanted to cover, anyways. It's one I personally like. It's not too difficult, but there's a lot of cool tricks and interesting stuff. Plus, I also like Wizards and Warriors 2 (which is MUCH harder), so I wanted to start with the first game.
      So, yeah, I'll definitely be covering Wizards and Warriors sometime soon!

    The toughest thing about playing this as a kid in the '80s was that it LOOKED like a game like Contra, but the gameplay is instead very deliberate and slow - you can't take anything fast (except for those hectic boss battles), you have to plan every single shootout and platforming moment.

      Thanks, Mario! I'm glad you're enjoying the channel!
      I would usually rent games at the local drug store, called Phar-More. They actually had a lot to pick from, and you could keep them for 2 nights, which was nice. We didn't get a Blockbuster until later when I had the SNES.
      I remember when the drug store stopped doing rentals, and they put all of the games on sale. I think my mom let me buy 3 games (or maybe I got 1 and my brothers each got to pick one, but let's just say that I strongly influenced their picks) - it was so awesome to own a couple of my favorites that I had rented so many times.

    Something not mentioned for those very new to the game, anytime in the missions that you want to see how many bullets you need to get to the next level press start (or select it’s been awhile🤷‍♂️) the pause screen will show the overhead view and down at the bottom it will show current bullets\how many bullets to get to next upgrade eg. 20/30.

    I was in elementary school when I first encountered this game. Initially I found it really hard but quickly got hang of it. After many hours of struggles I was able to defeated the final boss (after numerous death when I tried to get underneath of the helicopter). There were absolutely no instructions at that time and all were done with trial and errors, and an English-to-Chinese dictionary. Been very proud of that I believe I was the only kid around the neightbourhood who actually made all the way through the game.

    The original Commando was the first NES game I bought besides the games that came with with my NES, ie Duck Hunt and Gyromite. Played that game so much my thumb had a dent that hurt for days. When I saw Bionic Commando at my cousin's house, I wasn't sure it was actually a "sequel" to Commando since it's so different. But I started to get used to it and eventually got my own copy. One of my favorite NES games still. Downloaded the "Re-armed" remakes and got the sequel game too. But the original NES is still my favorite.

      It's just such a weird thing - I would expect that most companies would take the easy path, and just translate the game, clean off the swastikas, and ship it. Love your channel! Just subbed a few days ago and this was seriously the game I was gonna stump for in the comments -- and then POOF! here it is. Can't wait for the next one :) Also, I think the rope in the game ending IS the bionic arm. Older artwork of BC Guy in the green suit makes the arm look like a thick cuff-type thing. That's kinda how it's described in the old Worlds of Power Nintendo novels for kids from the 80s too. Like a Skywalker hand with a big wristwatch component housing the grapple that the guy grips each time like a rope. (I always pictured a big-ass claw in my imagination while playing tho)

    • @UCanBeatVideoGames

    Great videos, love how you offer background info about the game, it's lore, distribution and all kinds of game-show-necessary info-bites. Could you please do a video on Fly Dragon Boxing 3 (Hiryuno Ken 3 as it was known in Japan), I played this bad-boy about 3000 years ago and never did finish it, always got stuck at the dragon stage and the fact everything was in Japanese made it a tad bit difficult. I kinda got use to it through trial and error and figured out which symbol/letter meant what.

      🤣 So I played the Japanese version, and the amount of swastikas in it is staggering! They're on every building, flag, and even the red door that blocks you for not using the comms room. Nintendo was already telling people to cut crosses (which the pendant made it through somehow), so I'm not surprised that this game was overhauled.

      @@UCanBeatVideoGames I believe it is actually meant to be July 4, 1989 for the date of the picture in the ending scenes, as a lot of countries list the day first, then the month...The date at the very end of the game, when Super Joe is supposed to be "telling" this story and signs his name would be Feb. 8 2010...I remember in the old GameFaqs forums there was a thread about this date being "Bionic Commando Day." Can't believe it has been 11 years since that supposedly futuristic date! Keep up the good work!

    In my childhood, I had a bunch of Nintendo games. But my very first was Tmnt, Castlevania 2 (I discovered the one after) and Bionic Commando.
    The 2 first was too hard for my little hand 😅 but Bionic Commando was my favorite (was pretty good with his bionic arm) , and yeah..... I did it to the end, and choked by the hitler's resurrection. That is how implicated I was 🤣
    Nice job!
    Ps: Never played Commando (only with the rom version), but I did "Ikari Warrior", the same type scrolling game. I will check in your channel if you did it.
