I love the TG77, but it's the "nice guy" FM synth. Better resolution, more waveforms, more of everything. But a DX7 MK1 sounds clearly different, more impact in sound, quicker envelopes, it's got THAT FM sound... the difference is clearly noticeable. My first digital synth was the TG77, then I got a DX7... not comparable. You'll notice if you convert DX7 sounds into TG77 format.
Awesome demo. (as are all of your demos) AnalogAudio1, Retrosound72 & Jexus make the best demos. I badly wanted a D-50 back in the day, (& a Yamaha DX-7) but but we couldn't afford one. Mom did buy me a Korg Poly 800 in 1985 (in place of DX-7) & in 1987 my dear grandparents bought me a Roland D-10. I traded it for an Alpha Juno 1 back in the early 1990's. In retrospect it was a good trade IMO. Unlike the D-50, the D-10 has few redeeming qualities, but the Juno is a timeless, vintage, classic.
The ultimate pad machine. Still used live today on stage. I love the depth and sheer power of the sounds. Why I love synths so much. Turn it on. play, and drift off into a dream world of your own making. This and a Roland JD 800, and your in heaven. Vey well done. Thanks for posting. LOL .
I could program this in my sleep. Dead easy in my opinion. I had a lot of commisioned programing jobs on this back in the day. Still one of my all time favourite synths. ❤
I had a D50, MT32 and Apple 2E w/twin Franklin 5¼" floppy drives and a Fostex 280 in the 80's. My sequencing software was Half Moon Bay at 64-tracks. I don't recall being at all limited. Awesome home recording rig. Today I have a FantomX8, VP7 and run Cubase on my iMac27".
I wonder what some of the better-known patches (such as "Digital Native Dance", "Staccato Heaven", or "Stereo Polysynth") would sound like when run through various effects pedals?
***** I guess you're right. Then again, I was only asking the question in the first place because I've written this sci-fi novella titled "The Plutonian Chronicles" (which I have published online under my Deviantart account, in case you're interested) which includes a running joke about a character trying to do just that, resulting in the worst cacophony since the bard from "Astérix".
I guess a lot of vintage digital sounds analog by today's digital standards :) Fantastic that new real analogs are being announced all the time. Especially the eurorack modular format is completely out of control.
@xan1242 D-20 have very little to do with the D-50 though. None of the D series has the full architecture and depth of the D-50, nor does the JD800 for that matter. D-50 one of the best synths ever made and with a real synthesizer (not 'just a rompler') lurking inside. I program mine fine.

I've got mine in first hand,had a long history...Giggin' with a lot named Bands.... I can NOT imagine to sell it....but maybe...one day.....who knows....cheers ;-)
The MT-32 tone module is very similar to the D-50 but it suffers from very noticeable audio distortion due primarily to poor ground isolation. There are ways around it, though, and a couple of companies have done mod services for them.
Back in the day I had a Roland D-10. (which I traded for an Alpha Juno (after I bought the Korg M1) I also had a Korg O1/Wfd & M1Rex. I have a Korg Poly 800 & the Alpha Juno, plas a Korg Triton Pro X, Roland XV-5080, JV1010 & W30, & a Yamaha MO6. I recently bought a Korg Kronos X 88. Though I have an abundance of keyboards, the Roland D 50 & Korg DW 8000 are 2 keyboards I've always wanted. (& STILL do) Maybe after I pay off the Kronos, I'll hit eBay in search of a D 50.
Yeah loads of D50 presets all over it, esp the tracks Canyon Carver, Waters Gift (which features THE most lovely D50 patch ever "Soundtrack") Check out the album if you can!!
+KurtFuller One of the first synths I ever played in a music store as teenager. I was deeply impressed :-) The K4 surely has character and a strong basic sound. Even today I like it, I have one, but the K4 has serious MIDI timing problems. But it's great for pads. I hope that someday some freaks write a new OS to get rid of that timing problem.
I agree that programming this is not at all fun but surely this is less forbidding than the DX7? I've heard so much about how impenetrable the DX7 is that it's really put me off getting one. A shame really because I like the idea of building everything from pure sine waves, if my understanding of the DX7's synthesis is correct? Part of me wants to be convinced that (like the Yamaha CS30) they are not THAT unwelcoming!
- Check the mains cable, yes, this can be faulty - Check the primary fuse from the power supply - check if the power switch has continuity if in the ON position - check if AC comes out of the transformer, secondary (low voltage) side - try to find out which DC voltages should be present at what test points in the power supply, if this is all OK, it's time to have it checked by a professional repair shop.
Is there any way to fix the aftertouch response on the D-50? I mean, it's been already third D-50 I've had and all of them barely responded to aftertouch. It's like 10% of what I get from an external controller. And the D-50 I have currently is like brand new in the box. Still, the aftertouch is barely working. Is that normal with the D-50?
@@MisAnnThorpe The Chorus can also be turned off this way. Feel free to ask me any questions about the D50. I have owned five since it's release, and still have my first. Yep, buy a rompler like an XV-2020 and plug in the back of the D-50's midi socket, it's the only way to get decent piano out of a D-50. D50 is really great for church organs and hammond organs though.
Hey. I just found your video here, watched it, and now wanted to know if you might live in, around, or not that far away, from NYC? The top 3 keyboards of the 80's was the Yamaha DX7, Roland D-50 and Korg M1. All 3 of them were ground breaking
Yes! But the most ground breaking was the Yamaha DX7. Even today, I would choose the DX7 over D-50 or M1 soundwise.
I have the D-50 and the M1, the DX7 sounds dull and limited to me, so i bought a TG77 ;-))
I love the TG77, but it's the "nice guy" FM synth. Better resolution, more waveforms, more of everything. WHY WE HAD SUCH GREAT EQUIPMENTS IN THE PAST ???😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😍😍😍😍
Absolutely! The best era for synths!
"Digital Native Dance" one of the sounds very commonly heard during late 80's TV and music. Awesome sound from an awesome machine.
Funny how people think so differently about sound. For me, Digital Native Dance is one of the worst and least usable of the D50's preset patches!
MisAnnThorpe and yet it was used on Dirty Diana by MJ!
Any examples you can think of in TV or ads? I heard that but never saw it
Great, all the sounds you can hear on Jean Michael Jarre`s "Revolutions" album.
A really amazing synthesizer. I wish i had this machine at home.
