    Imo Lost Highway is easily one of the best overall releases Criterion has done. The packaging is phenomenal, the transfer looks just like it did on the big screen a couple months ago, and of course the film is absolutely brilliant! Cheers, James! Another great review!

      Jacob, thanks. Glad to hear you enjoyed the review and I appreciate your feedback. I agree on this movie. It’s a fantastic film and this Criterion edition is very nice for a packaging standpoint and I like the supplements.

    I saw this in the theatre when it came out, and am a big Lynch fan. I have seen it maybe once or twice since then, but always considered it one of his less interesting films. After re-watching it with this 4K release, I noticed many more details (and put it in the context of all the work Lynch has done in the meantime) and have completely changed my feelings towards it. Really amazing movie.

      I agree. This movie is pretty awesome and I look forward to rewatching it to see what I missed the first time through.

    Great review! I personally love to watch a Lynch film in one of two ways. Either through a sound system with the volume cranked to the max or with headphones. Oh, and the room must be as dark as possible. Lynch loves to have almost a constant droning noise playing throughout his films and I have found that with a decent sound setup, that droning noise can put me in almost a trance-like state where his movies become even more "dreamier".

      Love that observation on the sound in Lynch films, urbanexcursion! I love how he uses sound to create the mood and atmosphere in his movies for sure and really enjoyed Lost Highway.

    if anyone else has noticed, about halfway thru the new 4k release, the audio gets corrupted for about five seconds. its during the scene where alice asks pete out to dinner.

    love this film, it's one of those films you wont understand the first time through but everytime you rewatch it you piece together a little more. I absolutely love the soundtrack too, it's very 90s and on paper it doesn't really look like it fits but somehow it compliments well with the grungy dreamlike noir tone of the film.
    great review by the way!

    Great review James. I'll admit that I wasn't into this one the first time I watched it, but I bought this because of the return of the DIGI PACK! I'll definitely give it a rewatch to see if my thoughts change.

      This is one of the very few times where Lynch was very candid about what inspired the story. One of the big inspirtations was the OJ Simpson trial. He saw a man who was clearly guilty, who had committed 2 horrific murders, and yet, here he was day after day smiling and being his old jovial Juice self in court. Dissociation is the big theme here in Lost Highway. How would one compartmentalize such a heinous act and then go about their day? You'd have to create an entirely new reality for yourself wouldn't you? Keep that in mind when watching it again, that's a key to unlocking this mystery. Also, sometimes the reality bleeds into the fantasy. It's all a mixture of fantasy and fact (within the story and psyche of the Pullman character). It's all up for interpretation and there is no ONE way to read a Lynch film (no matter what that clown Twin Perfect tells ya). Lost Highway is an interesting case because it is the one project (besides Dune) where Lynch was very open about a lot of what inspired the picture. I am a Lynch nut. The only film of his I actively hate is Inland Empire. I walked out of the cinema (partly because of the cinema itself and partly because of how unpleasant the aesthetic of the film is). I have seen it since in its entirety and I hate it. So, even though I am a Lynch fan boy, I can be critical. Lost Highway MAY be my favourite Lynch film, so please do give it a second chance and enjoy this imo perfect 4 UHD put out by Lynch and Criterion. Be well James and MidLevelMedia. Mid, I have subbed to your channel and I have watched a bunch of your vids in the past, but I don't know your name, so I am calling you Mid (no disrespect). James, my favourite Lynch film would likely be Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (if it's not Lost Highway) and then it gets very difficult to rank them after that (save for Dune and Inland Empire). I really really love David Lynch. Gentlemen, have a great day!
      EDIT: Yes of course we know The Elephant Man was based on a true and tragic story. I am speaking about Lynch's abstract cinematic yarns. Peace.

    classic LA film, Robert Blake and the phone trick at the party, knew it was a classic, Too bad David Lynch was marginalized as a director while he was cranking out this stuff.

      Hi, Frank! I appreciate that feedback on the audio. I probably should have adjusted the decibel level on that song track down a tad or chosen a different tune altogether. Sorry it distracted from you being able to enjoy this video.

    • @frankvee
      @frankvee Рік тому

      @@20thand21stMovies No worries. I wanted to hear what you had to say as Lost Highway is one of my favorite movies and I think possibly the best Lynch film, but yeah, the background music was giving me anxiety. I think several minutes and it would have been fine if faded into another song but it goes on for the full length of this video... 18 minutes. I've never had that happen before but I think the repetivive chiming got to me after awhile. I paused the video to hear if it was coming from the video or from outside, and realized it was the video. Have a good day, and good luck with the channel.. .I appreciate your feedback and review.
