The Devil's Farmhouse Mellieha Malta

- This week I decided to visit the Devil's Farmhouse, also known in Maltese as Ir-Razzett tax-Xitan, and officially as Ir-Razzett Tax-Xjaten (The Farmhouse of the Devils or The Devils' Farmhouse), is an 18th-century farmhouse in Mellieħa, Malta. The farmhouse features two unconnected buildings. The original scope for the buildings were to function as stables and a horse-riding school (Cavalerizza).
At one point, the buildings were converted into farmhouses between different farmers, and the buildings underwent some structural changes. A Maltese myth claims that it was built by the devil, a tale from which it derives its historic name. It is a national monument and in a dilapidated state.
The Devil's Farmhouse was built in the 18th century during the rule of the Knights of Malta to be used as a horse stable. It is found in Ta' Randa very close to L-Għar ta' Zamberat (Zamberat's Cave). The farmhouse stands away from urban development in isolation. Attributed to the farmhouse is a myth that the farmhouse was built by the devil/s in one/three-day/s The only architectural feature that gives the impression of relating to demonic icons are the two enclosed staircases, that lead to the roof of the stable, which are suggested to appear as two horns.

Pierre, that was a fantastic blog, I lived in Mellieha for a few years but never knew about this place, it looks so interesting. The climb up and down those stairs was a bit scary, the whole site should be preserved for future generations. After watching the video to me it really make sense that the use of such an interesting vast old building had the purpose for a good quantity of stables "Cavalleriszza". Agree 100% with Mr.Attard for his comments and as a general thought its a shame to leave such a very old structure to be ruined completely. Thanks so much Pierre for taking us around that building, enjoyed it a lot as always, and good you have been very wise not to push yourself too much in those rooms and stairs as it was very evident that the structure is very weak and dangerous, keep safe. Hi Pierre, firstly well done, I'm Maltese but I had never heard of this place before, so grazzi. Secondly those side supports for the xorok are called kileb, and from the back it looks very plain and with no windows, because back in the days when piracy was rampant in the Mediterranean and raids were done and people used to be taken as slaves. They used to build so that the outside of the building facing the bays especially, would look like a fortified wall. In fact even the old part of Żejtun if you look at it from the fields the houses look like a fortified wall.

The Girna was a shelter from the elements for farmers but mostly used as a tool shed for farm implements. I was told it’s pronounced as in G for give and not as in G for George, but correct me if I’m wrong. Lovely video, love our old buildings which sadly going to rot, killing our architectural heritage. Fascinating place. shame Heritage Malta isn't getting involved in its restoration.What a lovely building with its history and views, so surprised someone isn't living rough in it.

Thank you Pierre. Probably, no apertures, apart from ventilation 'holes', where not done to protect from the northerly winds. If i'm not mistaken, apertures face the 'southern' part, which is slightly shielded by the hill.

Was originally built by the Knights of St. John as stables called 'Cavalerizza'. Its been told that there are funds for its restoration but a big shame for whatever reason its being left in this shameful state.

@@PierreFarrugia If it is true, there is a story during the Third Punic War and the destruction of Carthage by the Roman General Scipion, where 340 girls were taken to an island called Megara (according to Appian this island was near Sicily) but, it is not this town of Megara the port of the Island of Gozo.?
