Even as someone who hasn't watched any of Buffy the musical episode being directly tied to character development is why I admire it, even from afar. It's also why the best Steven Universe, Adventure Time, and Community musical episodes are good; so many musical episodes feel like one-off jokes meant to be consumed without any context, but the point of any musical is to convey plot development through meaningful song. You can write a one-shot single episode plot that works as a musical that anyone can understand if that's the only episode they see, and that's fine, but it feels like a much more interesting use of both the TV and musical mediums to use your musical episode to actually develop and conclude plot threads from previous episodes. The way that musical episodes enable characters who have been limited by either dialogue or silence for hours of story up until this point to finally be able to directly express their emotions in a climactic way is a benefit that TV shows have over either movies or stage musicals.

Don't know if you've seen it, but you've mentioned liking modern cartoons so I'll recommend it. Tangled the Series is a continuation from the movie that is done so well with some truly fantastic songs that I can't recommend enough. I think most of the premier/midseason/season finales have enough songs have enough songs to qualify. It just truly has some fantastic songs, big fan of Ready As I'll Ever Be and Nothing Left to Loose are the biggest highlights for me. It's defiantly a show simular to something like a Phinease and Ferb or Steven Universe in the sense that music is highly present but not always being a straight up musical tv show. Loved the list in general, even if I had not seen many of the show. You are highly engaging to watch. (I also loved the My Babysitters a Vampire video, I loved that show as a kid. I love a found family dynamic that the show had particularly in season 2)
As someone who did choir for years and one musical in middle school and will watch almost show that seems mildly entertaining to me several times over I didn't realize how much I needed this video. And idk why but it struck me how good it is when u set up the intro for American Dad. I have unfortunately seen every Seth MacFarlane show at least 3 times and his musical talent isn't acknowledged as much as it should be!! And to reference Mean Girls the Musical like god I probably listen to a song from that soundtrack at least once a day. All this to say musicals are just fun songs that tell spell out a story and have to be preformed so that everyone can fully understand and appreciate them, and I feel like most are but a majority of the common audience for these shows don't care. Musicals get too much hate anyway none of what I said made any sense thank you for making this video xo
I loved how deep you dove with It’s Always Sunny and Community. I’m a fan of both of those shows, but wouldnt have remembered half of those episodes and wouldn’t have ever known about the Always Sunny live show if it weren’t for this! I did feel like Buffy kind of got the short end of the stick because you really didn’t have the context for that episode in comparison to the others, but everything else was very well researched! good stuff :)
I also agree that American Dad is much better, love when Steve sings R&B songs with no shirt. It's always sunny is also my favorite show. Thank you for talking about it.
NO, NOT THAT HEATHERS EP. As a devoted fan of both the movie and musical, I have never hated a tv show more in my life. Crazy Ex Girlfriend is my favourite musical show of a time. The charactrer and songs from Greg is my all time favourite especially Hey, West Covinia and Shitshow. I do love American Dad more than Family Guy. Roger is my favourite asshole. The trapped in the closet parody by Steve is so good. Always Sunny. The Nightman Cometh, I know all of the lyrics 🤣 thats how much I love this show and episode. I also adore arrested development way too much. Adventure Time broke me with the Ice Kings backstory and Marcey.
There's this Canadian TV show called Todd and The Book Of Pure Evil, its a really funny show but it has an episode that's a musical episode and the songs are all absolute bangers but surprisingly enough it also pushes the plot of the show forwards really well so it feels even better than the common musical episode
i actually started steven universe because my friends were singing 'it's over isn't it" one day and I was like what's that, and then watched every episode that was out until that point and have been grateful ever since
just enjoyed this video thoroughly (genuinely laughed out loud A Lot, cried a couple times, even for a show i hadnt seen, and was even persuaded to enjoy shows i hadnt before) and then saw it had 600 likes ???????? wth ??? this is good content, people ???????
1:22:28 I think I have one (of many, I’m sure) answer(s) to your, ‘I don’t exactly know why I like this so much/find this so impactful from a logistical standpoint, I just do,’ conundrum. As a former theater kid (and now proud owner of a musical theater degree), the best way I’ve heard anyone describe why people tend to find music/musicals so impactful was explained thusly by a few professors of mine, and it’s really stuck with me: when it comes to musicals, character/emotional motivation to break into song/dance works like this, if you can’t find the words to explain your emotions via dialogue, you sing them, and if the emotions are too overwhelming to even open your mouth, then you express them with dance. (I’m lengthening that to try and explain what they meant in a bit more depth, the actual phrase was really more like, “if you can’t say it, sing it, and if you can’t sing it, dance it” but I didn’t want to just assume that would totally make sense to anyone and everyone without the context of, like, knowing my professors, idk.)
The Buffy episode is still the best for me, as it adds so much to the story, is really fun, and has some absolutely incredible songs. Plus, the vampires dancing in the opening song is the greatest thing I've ever seen in my entire life.
I Was not emotionally prepared for I will remember you coming up T-T Also this video has convinced me to give American dad another shot and to check out Community! Brilliant Award show thank you for making this!!
So Seth MacFarlane hasn't made a musical, but he did play a jazz-loving mouse in the 2016 movie Sing! The character was a complete jackass the entire time for no reason, and then at the end I'm pretty sure he's canonically eaten by a bear bc we never see nor hear about him once in the sequel.
This is a really well-done video! In fact, it’s so well done that I put it on to go to sleep to when I woke up with nausea and ended up staying awake for the whole hour and a half. I hope it picks up in views!
this is mostly unrelated but rebecca sugar went to my old high school and attended the magnet arts program there but whats interesting abt this fact is that when famous alumni's r brought up its almost like sugar is a taboo subject n ive always found it odd bcos not even the old art teachers (who ik for a fact were teaching the arts program) bring them up when talking abt former students... sors for the tangent but this vid reminded me of this bcos of the end bit talking abt how steven universe is hated on
Adventure time made me cry so many times as a kid and I've been singing The Garden Song since the first time I heard it and never stopped :p It's one of my favorite songs and I've sang it soooo many times for talent shows :p
I was so confused how I've watched this video and others of yours already, while only just finding your channel a few days ago. And then realized most of your thumbnails have a red line on the bottom that makes it look like I've watched them before. I thought I was going insane lmao.
remember you is by far the best episode of modern television, and by far in animation. I remember when I first watched it, and from that point on I was addicted to the show. I had liked the show previous to watching that episode, but not to this level. Essentially the same thing you said is what I felt. That episode is just such a gut grinder. At the time I was too young to really grasp the underlying metaphor for dementia, but I still comprehended the gravity of the situation. This was also the episode which made me look forward to any episode with Marceline and Simon, I was desperate for any more information about them, or some sort if catharsis to their relationship, and overall it made me care so much more about the lore of the show. I don't know if I can even put into words how much this episode effected my childhood, but anytime I hear the song I cry, maybe not so much anymore, but at the bare minimum a few hot tears.
I actually had to stop this video three times to go watch episodes you mentioned (Phineas and Ferb, Big City Greens and Adventure Time) because like you I cannot get enough of a good musical episode. I didn't list Steven Universe because I listen to all those songs like once a week. Also I died laughing when you said "good luck making fun of Gravity Falls, bitch!"
came from this year's musical episode awards, figured i would drop my own favorite down here too since everyone else has lol it's gotta be wander over yonder's "my fair hatey" for me there's just so much to love about it- they skip the regular intro in favor of a whole musical-esque number (and i personally think jack mcbrayer is a fabulous singer, so bonus points) and within the context of the episode, and the rest of that season as a whole, the music is almost ironically cheerful in comparison to what the plot actually is. at one point, clean rips of all the music was available on the composer's soundcloud, andy bean. pretty sure it still is, but i downloaded the album so i havent actually looked
I think the zeitgeist nostalgic era is catching up me. Finally some early 10s and late 00s rep. I'm glad to have grown up with Steven Universe, Adventure Time, and Phineas and Ferb. Their musical episodes were ingrained into my psych, and I can remember Phineas and Ferb being brought up and referenced so often in elementary and middle school. My best friend and I were huge Adventure Time fans, down to owning franchise video games and playing the Card Wars app. The show's seemingly endless universe of creativity was already my first major influence to start writing fictional stories in my notebooks and drawing illustrations to go along with them, but unraveling the more emotional narratives from season 3 onward was the first time I could remember getting viscerally emotional at a TV show. That song "I Remember You" was the precise point where I can remember that level of emotional impact that I hadn't fully understood but would linger in my mind forever.
I am THE ONLY person I know who loves American Dad/think it's better than most adult animation. Glad to see there are other out there, haha. Fantastic video, once-a-fuckin-gain!! 😌
it baffles me that you make videos at such a high level of quality and i found out about you like 2 days ago, subscribed but i do feel guilty, and i will be liking the video as well to atone for my crime

The Super Mario Bros Super Show probably had two theme songs to tell you if that day you were getting a Mario cartoon or a Zelda cartoon as both were part of the same show (The Super Mario Bros Super Show) although the Zelda portion eventually got seperated in re releases (this actually caused a few of the live action segments that aired with Zelda to become lost)
Thanks for the incredibly brief but positive mention of Clarence. Absolutely love that show, it was so big in my 'healing my inner child' stage and totally captured a feeling of grandiose nostalgia where everything feels more meaningful and special than it probably is
This was one of the most enjoyable UA-cam videos I’ve watched. Can’t wait to binge a bunch of your videos. This is also a great format to talk about a bunch of shows
This makes me want to rewatch community. I skipped all the high concept episodes when I watched it in middle school. I saw puppets or animation and thought "yeah that's going to be stupid"
I like that when you bring up American Dad compared to the other two, the background has one of my favourite Family Guy jokes, which I can't mention in public outside of a UA-cam comment. It's a perfect "Dude!" joke: "A Looter!" "Self-defense!" "A black guy and a white guy talking together like that's normal!"
I kind of expected Band Geeks from Spongebob it made enough of an impact that they petitioned to get it played at the superbowl we got screwed of course but I feel an honorable mention was at the very least warranted there lol
I really like that u try and stay positive. I also appreciate the channeling of ur negativity into ur puppeteering art form. much love brother keep up the amazing work
Ain't got rhythm is the only Phineas and Ferb song that randomly gets stuck in my head. And I wasn't a big fan of Phineas and Ferb, but I love that song.
"Dude, We're Getting The Band Back Together!" gets overlooked? where have I been??? maybe I was just too old by the time it came out, but "Rollercoaster The Musical" went completely under my radar when it first aired and when I finally saw it during a binge-watch I kinda felt nothing, the only song I can still remember is "What 'cha Doin?"
About 95% of the things you said I 100% agree with so this video was the perfect thing to stumble upon tonight. And no, Always Sunny was made for me specifically and this video changed my brain chemistry and now I'm in love with musicals (and you're right, a surprisingly large number of Sunny fans are theater kids and musical nerds - I believe the whole cast are - and unfortunately for everyone now I am one, too
Fun fact: They had to re-storyboard Pearl’s solo to make her face match the emotion of her VA’s performance

Was looking for this comment.
You see season 3 yet? Crazy they had to go animated, but it's still got the heart of the show.
i actually started steven universe because my friends were singing 'it's over isn't it" one day and I was like what's that, and then watched every episode that was out until that point and have been grateful ever since
just enjoyed this video thoroughly (genuinely laughed out loud A Lot, cried a couple times, even for a show i hadnt seen, and was even persuaded to enjoy shows i hadnt before) and then saw it had 600 likes ???????? wth ??? this is good content, people ???????

I think I have one (of many, I’m sure) answer(s) to your, ‘I don’t exactly know why I like this so much/find this so impactful from a logistical standpoint, I just do,’ conundrum.
What you said about the vulgarity in jokes is 100% true and will do anything for a full video about that
This is a really well-done video!
Adventure time and especially Rebecca and Olivia Olson are just a powerhouse of songs
10:49 are you implying that the kids choice awards ISNT a dignified award show?
American Dad introduced me to one of my favorite bands: Wax Fang. Just another one of many reasons that I like the show.
This is such an underrated channel, all your videos are so entertaining istg
My personal fave is Duet from The Flash. It was fun and was the only episode outside the first season that really wowed me
I actually had to stop this video three times to go watch episodes you mentioned (Phineas and Ferb, Big City Greens and Adventure Time) because like you I cannot get enough of a good musical episode.
I didn't list Steven Universe because I listen to all those songs like once a week.
Also I died laughing when you said "good luck making fun of Gravity Falls, bitch!"
came from this year's musical episode awards, figured i would drop my own favorite down here too since everyone else has lol
it's gotta be wander over yonder's "my fair hatey" for me
there's just so much to love about it- they skip the regular intro in favor of a whole musical-esque number (and i personally think jack mcbrayer is a fabulous singer, so bonus points) and within the context of the episode, and the rest of that season as a whole, the music is almost ironically cheerful in comparison to what the plot actually is. at one point, clean rips of all the music was available on the composer's soundcloud, andy bean. pretty sure it still is, but i downloaded the album so i havent actually looked
I cant explain the change the trajectory of my life had when i saw the premiere for I Remember You
I think the zeitgeist nostalgic era is catching up me.
Here before this channel blows up, you have such a unique style and you clearly put so much effort into it. Keep it up!
The guy that voices the Gnome in that Freedom episode of PPG is Jess Harnell, legendary voice actor for Wacko from the Animaniacs ~
Yeah I was hoping he'd at least mention his name, but oh well. Video was still good though.
I watched this whole episode and you didn’t even mention the Daria musical episode HOW
For serious, I dig this, you did a great job. But HOW
I am THE ONLY person I know who loves American Dad/think it's better than most adult animation.
I have never heard the censored version of the aztec tomb joke before and it felt so natural i thought i slipped into an au.
Anywho, i just discovered your channel and have devoured so much already. So exciting to find a new channel i vibe so hard with!! Great video!
Wander Over Yonder had a musical episode that absolutely deserves more attention
The Super Mario Bros Super Show probably had two theme songs to tell you if that day you were getting a Mario cartoon or a Zelda cartoon as both were part of the same show (The Super Mario Bros Super Show) although the Zelda portion eventually got seperated in re releases (this actually caused a few of the live action segments that aired with Zelda to become lost)
just found your channel, this shit rocks + AMERICAN DAD APPRECIATION!!
Thanks for the incredibly brief but positive mention of Clarence. Absolutely love that show, it was so big in my 'healing my inner child' stage and totally captured a feeling of grandiose nostalgia where everything feels more meaningful and special than it probably is
American Dad musical episodes are some of my favorites. The Krampus and Hottest episodes are some my favorites.
This was one of the most enjoyable UA-cam videos I’ve watched. Can’t wait to binge a bunch of your videos. This is also a great format to talk about a bunch of shows
I always want to cry when I remember I remember you
The Clone High episode is also a parody of the band The Who's musical called Tommy
This makes me want to rewatch community. I skipped all the high concept episodes when I watched it in middle school. I saw puppets or animation and thought "yeah that's going to be stupid"
Clone High introduced me to Abandoned Pools which is honestly one of my favorite bands now, the early 2000s alternative just hits
I don’t know if he knows the Phineas and Ferb argument he made is the coldest take of all time
I like that when you bring up American Dad compared to the other two, the background has one of my favourite Family Guy jokes, which I can't mention in public outside of a UA-cam comment. It's a perfect "Dude!" joke:
"A Looter!" "Self-defense!" "A black guy and a white guy talking together like that's normal!"
Where's the Donkey Kong Country cartoon, that had 2 musical numbers per episode and it lasted for 40 episodes with 2 seasons made between 1997-2000.
Three song minimum
Using your rules, “How I Met Your Mother” is already off of the list there's only one song in that episode.
Can we make this an actually annual thing?
I loved adventure time when it was coming out. But tbh I Remember You is still the only episode i properly remember.
finally someone that listens to songs from musical episodes an unhealthy amount. it's crazy how many musical episodes albums I have on my phone
Appalled by the massive lack of Scrubs.
Jokes aside, good vid and solid ranking ;)
I wonder where Dead End Paranormal parks musical episode would rank on this list
The scrubs musical my musical totally got snuffed
SERIOUSLY
Big city greens character their list:
1: Gloria
2: grandma
3: the.... the other ones
I kind of expected Band Geeks from Spongebob it made enough of an impact that they petitioned to get it played at the superbowl we got screwed of course but I feel an honorable mention was at the very least warranted there lol
I really like that u try and stay positive. I also appreciate the channeling of ur negativity into ur puppeteering art form. much love brother keep up the amazing work
The GALL of showing footage from Influenza the Musical yet not using it. I cannot believe it.
Shia being a bad singer adds to the charm.
good laughs throughout! you've quickly become one of my favorite creators
Well, the Ice King mention came out of nowhere but yes. Just yes.
Remember you fucking BROKE ME as an adult since I never watched it as a kid. It’s in my “I need to cry” playlist
this video was a good love letter to some media I already love, and got me interested in some stuff I hadn't already checked out, good content :)
I was so so happy when you mentioned DWGTBBT because that's always been one of my favorite episodes of Phineas and Ferb!
The fact that you played a clip from like half the other songs in DWGTBBT but not ain’t got no rhythm is pure evil 😛
1:05:55 i notice that bob's burgers happens to be absent
also since i'm commenting, nice vid, currently on first rewatch
I love that episode is misspelled
I would have included world tour solely because that was a big point of that show, they had to sing at least once per episode.
frankly with the clone high part i couldn't stop laughing how you kept just showing the scene of Ghandi and Abe making out over and over
The Best thing about American Dad is that McFarland is not apart of it very much
When riverdale heathers started playing I just screamed in terror "NOOOO NOT THIS AGAIN"
Wow? This is like 10 video essays in one video, incredible stuff
