A lot of the stage moves remind me of DEVO. BTW, if you haven't seen DEVO and Neil Young performing a nearly ten minute long version of Hey Hey My My, you abolutely need to see it. Look for the one that's 9:52 in length. It starts off highly competent and then becomes.....

The English band the Tornados played the instrumental song "Telstar" in 1962. The song was written and produced by Joe Meek, and was the first single by a British band to reach number one in the US.
Joe Meek was a genius record producer way ahead of his time in the UK. He had a tragic life being gay at a time when it was illegal. He killed himself with a shot gun after doing the same to his landlady and before getting any royalties for Telstar because of a legal dispute. There’s a great movie about him unsurprisingly called Telstar.
The Spotnicks was an instrumental rock group from Sweden that formed in 1961. Together with the Shadows and the Ventures, they were considered one of the most famous instrumental bands of the 1960s.[citation needed] They were famous for wearing "space suit" costumes on stage, and for their innovative electronic guitar sound. They released 43 albums, and sold more than 18 million records.[
The lead guitar had extra heavy strings to make their signature sound. And Telstar was the first working communication satellite. I remember that well. A sensation.
Oh wow! I haven't heard this song in ages. I used to hear it on the oldies stations when I was younger. Thanks YT for this excellent recommendation. I love music that has this feeling. I can't describe it.

Recalling the time, I can remember a pervasive feeling of hope and aspiration in the world then. Not everywhere and in everyone, of course, but there was that sense of unrealized wonderment that could be felt, much as it can be felt now with space telescopes and robotic planetary missions. Music like this helped to express that collective sense of reaching upward. We need more of it now.
Back then, people thought the next step that would change the world would be space travel. It was the next step in transport technology after boats, trains, cars, and planes... but the other thread of technological advancement was communications, and communications have been what have really changed our world in the 21st century. And now, the next step we need to reach is energy technology. We have the knowledge, we just need the will to reach it...

Way, way ahead of their time. Their Rocket Man song was *pre* proto New Wave, if there is such a thing. Nobody can convince me that the '60s, my generation's music, wasn't the most innovative, best music ever.
Actually, it’s not The Spotnicks. It’s Bo Winberg who plays guitars, bass, organ and shakes matchboxes, and this recording was made under the name The Shy Ones.
Debra Harry liked oldies as evident by some of the songs the band Blondie did covers of. I hear a few chunks of this song in their song "Dreaming". go listen to both back to back!

No you can't. It IS the Tornadoes. Listen to the real Spotnicks' version elsewhere. They didn't have an organist - this original version is played with lead organ!

The original was played on a monophonic UniVox. You can see it in some early photos of The Tornados. It was designed to clip under a piano keyboard. My Father had one.
Never heard in 62-63, maybe Spanish version of Telstar (Brit. UK). Very good copycat on a regular mini-organ with guitars. Nice copy version. IMO. Spotnick is like Sputnik? Different microphone type intensity and differential. Very interesting.
These guys are a trip! Total 80s in 1962.

Yes - as a massive Spud fan (I saw Devo 4 times), the second I saw these guys I thought there's a pre-Devo band
Love this music/lyrics. Brings me back to the better days when life was simple and more romantic.
