The Ford Fusion has sported the same general look for 5 years now, and the 2017 update doesn’t stray too far from the original formula. Inside, changes are more dramatic, but still not revolutionary. A rotary dial now controls gear selection, and this frees up a lot of space on the center console for a larger storage bin, tandem cupholders, and a new smartphone tray. But what you should be really excited about is that the Sync 3 system now powers the Fusion’s infotainment.
Performance from the batteries and electric motors is definitely up this year. Ford claims you’ll be able to travel up to 22 miles on electric power alone, an increase of 2 miles over last year. Any improvement is certainly welcome, but with the hills of the San Francisco Bay, I never got anywhere near 20 miles of electric driving, and before you claim that I was driving with too heavy a foot, the digital “Eco-meter” was showing I was quite efficient in my acceleration, braking, and coasting, so it wasn’t my driving habits that posed the problem. I may get into one of these or a 2nd gen Volt Premium on the used car market in the next year or two
When speaking of price you need to mention a $4011 Federal Tax credit . Then there may be local incentives in your area. In California there is a $1500 tax rebate and Southern California Edison gives you $450. With local dealer discounts here in LA a 2017 Fusion Energi SE can be had for $25,995. Net net that is $20,034 vs $19,095 for a conventional 2017 Ford Fusion SE. With fuel savings you will be in the black after ~12k miles.
I just leased my 2018 Energi SE with the fixings. So far I've averaged right around 37 mpg between city and highway, but I've only put 300 miles on it. I have to say that accelerating on the highway wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Overall, I can tell the weight difference between my 2015 SE with the 2.5 liter. But it's not bad at all. MYFORDMOBILE app is awesome as well. So many features that you can monitor. I traded out of my 2016 Focus ST because it wasn't practical, and I'm glad I did.
Jose Martinez Damn good chassis on this beast, and that extra weight down low keeps it nicely planted.
Agreed especially with the amount of snow we have received here over the last week. Goes right through it with no issues. Great review BTY.
Jose Martinez Thanks! Appreciate it.
Just as a side note, I test drove the 1.5 Ecoboost and it didn't feel as quick on acceleration as the Energi. Am I off by thinking this? IDK maybe I'm just crazy, but it didn't feel like it was to me.
Jose Martinez That instant electric torque really hits hard. Probably more seat of the pants than anything, but fun is fun and feel is feel.
The hybrid system does most of the braking using the electric motor. Only heavy braking and parking lot speeds use the friction brakes. Extra wear from the weight of the hybrid battery and other components is just not a factor in wearing out the suspension or brakes.
Mendicant Bias Extra weight *will* wear out every part of the car faster. That's a fact, Jack.
Facts require evidence. Conjecture and hypotheticals don't cut it. Heavier weight can wear out some components, maybe shocks/struts, although it's likely Ford runs a higher spring rate to compensate for the added weight. There is no evidence hybrid Camry's or Fusions have higher rates of suspension or brake failures due to their extra gross weight compared to their regular non-hybrid versions.
Mendicant Bias You're absolutely right, but that's not what I'm saying. Either extra wear or sturdier components, the result is more cost to the consumer and poorer performance.
Which is offset by the increased fuel economy and reduced emissions (both positive performance metrics).
Mendicant Bias Sure, but that's a separate issue, especially when the advertised efficiency improvement fails to materialize in real-world driving.
Buddy im getting 39mpg with my 2013 2.0L ecoboost!? Are you talking mpg in gas mode only? That would make sense if your driving normal to slightly aggressive but in hybrid mode you should easily get 40 to 45
Yeah, I was getting around 38mpg when I ran out of electric juice.
You are NOT Getting 39MPG In A 2013 2.0 Ecoboost! I Have A Platinum 2.0 Twin Scroll Ecoboost And I Don’t Even Get Close To That And It’s More Efficient Than The 1st Gen 2.0 Ecoboost lol
How much power does the Fusion Energi make anyway?
195 with engine and motor on,188 with only engine and 115 i think with only motor
I average 65mpg in my 17 fusion energi
2:57. How about actually stopping?
Great test drive review, Michael! The Fusion it's self isn't a bad looking vehicle! Also, I really like how Ford doesn't make the Ford Fusion Energi look like it's a Plug-in Hybrid... It looks very similar to a "typical" vehicle, and will probably fool many into thinking it's the original Fusion (as long as they don't spot the "Energi" badges and the battery inlet).
Also, it's range on battery only isn't the best, but when it is working in hybrid mode, it does fairly well for it's self (looking at the numbers)! Keep up the great work, Michael! I am looking forward to your next test drive review! 😉👍

"The Quest To Record The Best!"
I don't necessarily hate the way its competitors look, but I do favor this design over its competition. I actually just finished reviewing the new Ioniq and Niro. They both are Hybrids, but in my eyes are taking the crown when it comes to sophisticated styling (in their classes)! They look very "gasoline car like". Not overly styled, but not too boring in their looks! Thanks for commenting! 😉

I guess the plugin hybrid doesn't make sense if you're driving a lot past the 20 mile electric fuel rrange however if you have a 10 mile commute or 20 mile commute where you can plug in at work you're going to be running electric 100% of the time and then it makes a lot more sense.
Yeah my work is 9 miles from me and i avarage 97.5 mpg
Yea, my work is 6 miles one way.
sooo the gas engines just under the hood to waste space and so you pay more when you buy it, it doesn't actually burn gas and run the wheels!?!?!? wow that's weird /s/
@@aidensnew8562 If you use the hybrid in EV mode all the time, you can really just think of the gas engine as being a backup range extender. Gasoline will always cost more than electricity, so realistically driving in EV only mode will save a lot of money. Especially considering gas prices now. I drive a Mercedes B250E, and there are plenty of charging stations where I live that are actually just free to use, $0 to recharge.
The Fusion is a solid car in the midsize class. However, the platform overall needs a diet.
Agreed. Trends in the auto industry on the whole are promising. It's time everything lost some weight.
It feels like an old 80’s boat to drive, it’s hilarious it gets such crazy mpg and has all the modern tech bc otherwise it smells and rides like an 86 Caddy lol

40 grand for a four door car that will only hold set of golf clubs?
Me needs to think about this.
what else are you going to put back there? a body? bricks? lol...not all sedans need so much space to put stuff in...and mostly people dont use all that space
This is almost a fully electric car and a midsized sedan, too. The Toyota Prius and the Chevy Volt are COMPACTS (smaller). If you need more cargo space, get the C-Max Energi which is a CUV and gets better MPG than the Fusion. And if you need to "think" you are doing it wrong.
With the Clarity out now how is your feeling on the Fusion? Is the Outlander PHEV a choice in the mix now as well?
It’s a commuter boat. I’ll put 200k on this thing and get gas like 20 times lol. This car is built for the California commute.
First!
he talks sooooo slow
