  • This could be two stroke bike perfection - Shakey Byrne rides the new Langen 250 against his own classic Suzuki RGV250 in this new episode of Byrne Out. Not only that, he also gets to fire up and worship the MotoGP winning RGV500 of Kevin Schwantz. Rest assured there's a lot of smoke in this episode...
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
Langen ( www.langenmoto... ) is the only brand new two-stroke road bike on the market in 2022. It is a British engineered and built 250cc injected twin, weighing under 120kg and over 75bhp. As a massive fanatic of the 2-stroke Shakey Byrne has wanted to ride and review the Langen in a while, but it was the perfect excuse to dust off his restored 1991 Suzuki RGV250. Will the Langen impress? Are we glad that someone is bringing 2-stroke motorcycles back from extinction?

    Oh man...!
When you opened up the Langen for the first time (at about 13:50 in the video) the hairs on the back of neck pricked up and I realised I had the biggest grin on my face...!! 🤪
One of THE best bikes I ever owned as a kid back in the early 80s was a twin-cylinder Yamaha RD200 - did absolutely nothing until about 8,000rpm and then it just flew...!
    Just epic... 😎

Passed my test on my Yam FS1E and then got the favourite of all my bikes, the Yamaha RD250LC. Oh god, she was such an amazing piece of kit, and the smell of the 2 stroke has become one of my absolutely favourite things. You don't come across it much these days, but if you're lucky enough to get up to the Isle Of Man GP, there's usually a fair few two strokes on and off the track.
I binned my 250 whilst going over a roundabout, rather than around it, and my 17 year old self cried for hours. Still brings a tear to my eye.
The 250, and it's big brother, the 350YPVS, were icons of the 80's, as much as Jane Fonda in spandex, the Rubiks Cube and Walkmans. God, I miss the 80's 🤣
    Great job, Shakey, you're a natural 👍🏻

Mmmm, that smell 💚 Not using top quality synthetic oil=holed pistons at dawn :-D OK, that was the RD350 and TZR250; for the RGV/RS250, that'll be knackered Nicosil liners then (and a disc-valve dropping in to the cylinder to add to the fun). Fun times ;)

British engineering at its best - exquisite work - took me back to 18/19 yrs old and being lent - yes lent! a new RD400 one of the first with the rear disc brake by Hertford motorcycle club (near to Harris Performance) promptly put the tank bag on with map and bungeed a tote bag behind and rode it to Devon - remember beating a jenson Interceptor off the lights somewhere on the 303 - happy carefree days - embarrassingly slipped over on some gravel and bought a replacement indicator at the bike dealers whose name i can't remember on Green Lanes, Haringey where me and mates used to go and dribble over Kawasaki triples - thanks Jonny and Shakey for keeping us sane - long live the 2 Stroke

For such a bespoke machine, I am surprised that they have been able to keep the price down to £30k - hope it is a success for them so that they can move on with their next vision. We need more like this. Petrol engines are on the way out so this may be the last chance to make any two strokes with modern engineering
As it is if you want a two stroke roadbike your only option anymore is 20-30 year old Japanese carby bikes that cost new bike money since they're both desirable and becoming rarer by the day

I'm rebuilding my RGV250 for the third time, it's been a track bike for 15 years, many people don't know what they are still, but many know the sound, so hopefully the Langen can bring valuable knowledge to the general population about the origins of motorcycle! What an absolutely stunning bike!
Question about the Langen and also your RGV250. Are they running on premix fuel/oil? How is oil being circulated? the issue with premix is when you're off the throttle, no oil... but some of the oil feeding systems from external tanks don't work so well as they're not normally adjustable, and can run too rich or too lean, my RGV250 found out the hard way when being modified for track. So just wondering how they engineered that potential issue.

Ahh 2 strokes, the sound of my very misspent youth, my first "RoadLegal bike was a Puch 50cc fith a full size frame, that made it perfect for a bit of an update, so I put a Yamaha RD(ac) 125cc engine in it, it was amazing how many people (including the polce) stopped me to talk about my "Two cyclinder Moped", thank christ for angle grinders. I have an RGV500 & an RD500 & I use them both to take money off LitreBike riders that can't ride for shit, their ok(ish) in a streight line, but a monkey can do that, the art of riding a bike is in the "Twisties" & that's where these bikes shine, all that Torquegets you back up to speed real fast coming out of those corners & their fabulous handling lets you break late & enter that corner in just the right spot. The RG250 was the very first "Race Replica" & I remember thatif you rode it hard those "Bridgstone" tyres would start to melt, they stuck like fuk but lasted half as much as any other tyre. I do all my own spanner work & when I was working in industry I machined all the parts that wore out the most saving me a fortune & ensuring my bikes would work for a very long time to come. One of the very best things about these 2 strokes apart from the sound & smell is the fact they are small engines, I would much rather ride a small bike "Fast" than a big bike "Slow", to have a bike on the "Ragged Edge" is where the "Excitment" is & it is the best feeling you will ever get on any bike, but I'm pretty sure you already know this that's why you have a "Gamma" 250, if they madea 900cc it might beto fast & easy to have this much fun on, I do however have a 1972 "Gassed" Suzuki GT750 it is fully "RoadLegal" so not only does it do the 1/4 in 8.02 it is a fantastic "Sleeper" it catches "Everything"out at the lights, you would not believe the amount of "SuperBike" riders(?) that pull up very "Sheepishly" at the next set of lights. Yet anothet Excelent presentation, it's a shame so many of those bikes are going to end up in Penthouses & Mancaves never going to turn a wheel, I know plenty of people with more money than sense that have beautiful cars & bikes as "Ornaments" & it is truly heart breaking, I ride & race all mine, & I love doing it, I lost the ability to walk due to illness & I sold my collection(47) of old British & 2 stroke Japanese bikes from the 70's, I was told I would never walk again let alone ride, My beautiful wife "SuperNurse" told the Dr's Were not having that" she gave me a month to sulk then put me through 5 months of hell, but I was walking again(sort of) 2 years later I was riding, not like I used to, but riding is riding right?.

I still have my 87 RZ350; and it’s a joy to ride. Two strokes generally don’t have the longevity of four stroke engines, but if treated right, they can last pretty long. If you keep ringing their necks, whether four or two strokes, they’ll bite the dust faster.

Mostly people putting pipes on them and throwing off the jetting. 2 stroke snowmobiles often get pretty incredible longevity, ~15k miles before rebuilds. They get run harder than bikes too, snow drags a lot. 2 stroke street bikes can readily do 40k miles before rebuilds. And, when it comes time to rebuild, it's not half as complicated or expensive as a 4 stroke.

@@apodski Yeah my snowmobile crank went out at just around that. My bike has gone over 30,000, and still runs great. But I seldom ever rev it to the max.

Great review as usual. Shame the audio of the bike in a few places didn't match what was shown or it was badly out of sync.

I am in Australia. My first road bike was a 1979 Suzuki GT250
I bought it back a few years ago. Such a blast to ride, such terrible brakes compared to my GSXR .
Heck, even my motocross bike has better brakes! 🤣

Most fun road bike I owned was probably the RD250DX air cooled Yamaha, it was the first RD with alloy wheels, microns, bigger carbs, ported and flowed, passed everything except petrol stations, I paid £400 for it as a partly finished project, that gives you an idea how long back it was, still grinning thinking about that bike

I had a Suzuki GT 125. (Yes the 185 was better). But that 17bhp 125 really flew. All it needed was electronic ignition as the points needed adjustment every week.

Well if I was ever going to spend $30k+ on a bike it'd definitely have to be a BA two stroke, sucks the US didn't/doesn't get as many cool 2 stroke bikes as other countries like Euro, Australia, and seemingly everywhere else lol. Until then I'll have to keep restoring all the old 60-70s bikes we got! 😁😎

It looks very stable. I wonder if it'd be possible to make a 500cc V four version and get it to pass the emission tests ? Imagine 120 BHP without a massive amount in weight gain.

As you said this bike is very British apart from its Italian engine. Though of course the two stroke engine was invented by an Englishman Joseph Day in 1878, so even that has British roots.

Iv had many different bikes from ktm crossers to the 690 dukes to aprila touno v twins and the bike iv always regretted selling was my six days 125 2stroke as much as the others were great and done everything they were supposed to the 125 around the B roads and in the town nothing could touch it because it was so light and up to 75 it was extremely quick even my 450 4 stroke up to 60 had to play catch up don’t get me wrong the other bikes on the open road would eat it but put it on the tight and twisted roads and it’s agility and power band it was immense so I get the love of the 2 stroke proper fun and at a reasonable speed the touno was great but where it comes alive your breaking all the speed limits hence me having to not drive for a few months lol
