If that's the case, I recommend you set up a dedicated network for those cameras, because having that network open and available for all other IoT devices while you're gone may be a bit much.
A number of good WiFi routers will allow you to log in and see who (or rather, which devices) are connected to the router. This would be probably the best way to detect, Christopher.
Good tips - though I just connected my garage door opener to WiFi which negates the turn off WiFi when not home suggestion. Make sure you don’t have security cameras attached to WiFi also.
You left out some other much needed measures to secure a router - disable UPnP if not using a game console, use WPA2 or WPA3, and check your router logs for intrusion attempts.
A small remark. Disabling WiFi when you are away from your house is good for computer security. But it's less good for home security as everyone knows you are away.
Instead of turning off wifi, would it be as good to turn off broadcast of the wifi SSID(s) once your connections are made? This could be a full-time setting and you would have to provide guests both the guest SSID and its passcode.

Changing the ssid and password after your router has been in use for a while requires changes to all your IOT. At last count I have over a dozen: water flow detector, refrigerator, door bell, thermostat, and so on
Thanks, im not sure if i can do it but ill try. In our family is a person that i dont trust because she gave the password to everyone even when i said her to not doing so. Is there possibility to lock qr code scanning?
I’ve just got fiber installed at home and the service provider set my password and SSID name for me. He said I shouldn’t change these? How do I make sure my connection is safe? I have a second router that I think I can connect to the one they provided and use that since I have control on it. It’s not a fiber router but a normal ADSL router. Please advise
You can definitely connect a new router to your ISP modem box (which is often the same as the router). When you do, I would log into the ISP router and turn off the WiFi so that the only network you're broadcasting is the new WiFi router.
People (hackers/ neighbours etc) can set up a wifi network with the same name, and trick you into clicking on it. And then read yr data. Also a burgler can break in and plug Ethernet cable into yr router, to get access.
It's nice of you to make a video but some steps are missing for the non-initiated, for whom this video seems to be made. It's nice to have the number at the back of the router but then we jump to a website. What website is that? What URL? How do we get there?
It all depends on the model of the router. Usually the router will have the URL printed next to username and password (sometimes it’s just numbers for the URL).
Someone is blocking my wifi signal causing interruptions while I'm online. I unplugged my Amazon fire stick because someone was interrupting my shows. One night while watching a movie it kept going back to a specific spot in the movie. I had to turn it off. They must be using the SSID to do it. The same thing was happening at the school I worked at in Dallas. My computer would freeze and I would have to turn it off and back on again. Now someone is doing it at my apartment. It stops for a while after I change my password but after a week or so it will happen again. How do I prevent this. I've already had a tech come check things out but it is still happening. The tech told me not to disconnect it because it would not get security updates when turned off.
At 04:27 you say that someone could try to hack my computer while I am away from the house. How would they do that? Can they only do that when I am away from the house?
Not sure how it works in the US, but here in the UK where most people still have VDSL broadband via twisted pair copper, turning off your router regularly is not the best idea. It can result in DLM thinking there's a fault on your line that is causing loss of sync, which will probably lead it to throttle your max data rate in order to boost the noise margin. It will just keep doing this until the broadband becomes essentially unusable due to biblically slow speeds. Used to see it quite a lot with particularly thrifty customers when I worked as a faultsman.
Optimum settings has a caution mark in my settings. I can’t access it. They offered to changed it; I refused. Today the said the internet is down. Is working fine. My phones are blocked and computer crashed
I don't even see a setting to see if its even on wpa2 or wpa3 or whatever security an says the firewall is low or low firewall but no expiation on what it means, how to fix it nada nothing, also don't see a way to upgrade software, the router I think is provided by them but the modem for sure is and its always new top of line blah blah blah. Sick of upgrading only to still have internet problems an just one thing away from upgrading completely because they charge ever hell out of you for watching netflix, hulu, youtube, any video in general or downloading or uploading those two things quickly sets you over your data an they charge you for me happens every month.. I’m glad I found this channel. Thanks for your great content! My concern is that my ISP provides a router from a certain overseas manufacturer whose government is not known for respecting privacy. I did all of the standard recommendations but I am concerned that the router may have a backdoor that a malicious actor can use. Am I being overly paranoid?
Possibly. You're going to have to use some kind of modem/router and the fact is that most of them are manufactured outside your current country (US? UK?). You can mitigate this kind of risk by running your own router into that ISP-provided modem and encrypting the data with a VPN before it hits that modem. Make sense?
@@AllThingsSecured I am in the United States and that totally makes sense. It’ll take a little investment in equipment and some studying and preparation but it’s not too intimidating. Appreciate your response!
@@AllThingsSecured Well if we are going to buy our own router, why not buy our own modem too? or is it the case that with some ISPs, you must use their wireless modem?

Not a fan of the last piece of advice "if away switch off your wifi". How can I remotely view my security cameras after taking this advice? I'm in a rural area and my 4G isn't the best and can't always be relied on. I need to keep my wifi connected to effectively monitor my property.
How about an update regarding guest nw security vulnerabilities with Linksys routers...and why would one turn off their router with connected IoT devices?
I might do a separate video just for Linksys routers, but I'm trying to keep this one general enough to be helpful to most people. As for turning off your router, my point is it's worth considering that while you're away for long periods of time (i.e. a vacation).
If your router has a guest network feature, it should definitely allow you to secure it with a password. I would look for a setting like “encryption” and then choose “Personal WPA” or “WPA2”.
I have a question some device can change wifi password in an instant so my question is how to stop those devices or is there a application that can lock my password so they can't change in???
i think i have been hacked when i turn on the router when back to my home, it is possible to fish passwd when your system restart. So i dont think the last advice is really usefull.
I have BT Full fibre 100 with a smart hub 2. Apparently the router has very little functionality to allow me to tinker in my own network. Can't configure a subnet (guest network), manually assign 2.4 or 5 ghz bands etc. Anyone reccomended a good router that has great settings functionality to allow me control over my home network?
Wouldn't number 5 be potentially irresponsible when you come home and turn on wifi? All those connected devices, should you have any, would be making a lot of noise on the net, don't you think?
@@AllThingsSecured Yeah I know that. My question was about when you turn on the WiFi again, any iot device would be reconnecting and splashing the net simultaneously. I’m new to networking sorry if questions are seemingly ignorant ones.
All my home network has been hacked. I am locked out from my computers, my e-mails and my social media. The administrator password is changed as well. Tried to reboot but it doesn't help. Finding alot about how to secure but what to do when it"s already done?
Even if your home network had been hacked, I don't believe the hacker would have been able to lock you out of all your computers and accounts. Sounds like it might have come from your computer. If I were you, I would connect with a professional in your area.
@@AllThingsSecured thank you for your reply. Well I know who the hacker is. Insanely enough he used to help me with my network set ups and everything around technological stuff. Needless to say I trusted him. He did have excess to everything around and about me. Unfortunately. But I think it is time I follow your advice and have a real professional check it up.
It’s not bad, but if someone can easily walk in your house, take a picture of it and then use that to log into your network while sitting in their car on the street, I’d say go ahead and change it.
Lots of positive comments, all nice but I still don't know how to secure my router. All this vid does is tell you what, not how, to do. Bit like searching for "how do I get to Berlin in a train?" and the vid says "you get in a train to Berlin". Fantastic, how do I get to the station, which platform, time, change over. ie. Do I go to the control panel, device manager, is there a shortcut on the keyboard maybe, how do I get to the page that let's me change sht, do I need to restart the pc etc. Still, Nice looking vid though.
Thanks for the feedback. The reason I can't provide more detail is because every network router is different. I could show you how mine looks (and I have in other videos), but it would look different from yours, and then I would get tons of hate comments about "Hey...mine doesn't look like that!" 😂
LOL I put in a call to my business computer consultants! Thanks for the tips. Some people I hear get a VPN to access foreign crypto coins Not me of course But some people Ray
Great tips, but I dont believe there was alot of throught-process behind every tip. "Turn off your wifi if you're not home. There's no need..." for those who work remotely, wifi is a huge need and possibly your only means of monitoring your security cameras. You turn off your wifi and leave your physical home unsecured or turn on your wifi and risk being hacked. The tips should only revolve around how to SECURE your wifi.... Not turning it off as an easy solution.
Thanks for the feedback. If you listened carefully, I said to turn off WiFi when you're gone for extended periods of time (as in, during a vacation). And believe it or not, security systems existed before WiFi and there are other ways to secure your home.
turning off wifi while asbent is kind of hard to admit cause hackers can get to your network even if you are home...it is not like your presence at home is an obstacle!!
Awesome ideas, Josh...thanks for this vid! Question: I live in a house with multiple tenants. The woman upstairs has given me (and the other tenant, I presume) the passcode to the network. Should we have the same passcode? Would the woman upstairs have access to my devices since she was the one who gave out the passcode? Would the other tenant (who I presume has the exact same passcode...in fact I know he does)? Strange happenings across all my devices. Btw, she has control of the router. Thx, in advance; I get mixed info on this matter.
Hey Disa, it's probably not the best idea to run everybody not in the same household on the same network. You'll probably be ok, but there is slight risk there. Depending on your device and its security, they could have access to things you don't want them to have access to.
@@AllThingsSecured Hiya Josh! Thx so much for this confirmation...there are definitely shenanigans afoot in this place. I'm going to have hire someone to do some "cleanup work" & security. Any add'l suggestions? Thx once again! Be safe, be well, be blessed.
Hmm...it's hard to know without understanding more of the problem. I would plug your router directly into your computer, log in, and make sure that the WiFi network has at least WPA2 encryption enabled (which would require a password). Other than that, I suggest you reach out to the router manufacturer and find out what they can help with. Sorry for the issues!

I'm not sure I know what device you're talking about.
i think i have been hacked when i turn on the router when back to my home, it is possible to fish passwd when your system restart.
Have you seen the ones I recommend in the description of this video? I am really liking my Asus.
Wouldn't number 5 be potentially irresponsible when you come home and turn on wifi? All those connected devices, should you have any, would be making a lot of noise on the net, don't you think?
I'm not sure I follow. Those devices don't do anything when the WiFi is off, so they couldn't be "making a lot of noise".
@@AllThingsSecured Yeah I know that. My question was about when you turn on the WiFi again, any iot device would be reconnecting and splashing the net simultaneously. I’m new to networking sorry if questions are seemingly ignorant ones.
Very insightful and informative, thanks a lot!
How much does this cost
My router came with what appears to be an auto generated strong password on a sticker. Is this safe to use?
It's good🎉🎉🎉🎉
can you show me step by step
Is it possible for others to hack my devices if they use my wifi network even if my google passwords are secured

Do some stuff I got today effed
I stopped using wifi, to risky and had caused to many problems... seems like whatever i do they eventually get into my router.
Paranoia?
my WiFi whenever I try to connect a new device says bad security and says error when I connect any tips to fix it?
Hmm...it's hard to know without understanding more of the problem. I would plug your router directly into your computer, log in, and make sure that the WiFi network has at least WPA2 encryption enabled (which would require a password). Other than that, I suggest you reach out to the router manufacturer and find out what they can help with. Sorry for the issues!
You're the Head of Security and your password is"password"?

if you turn off your wifi when away that would turn off security cameras
This is too basic info. Was searching for how to use certificate to protect wifi.
I mean, it says 5 EASY ways. The basics are usually easy.
Okay , but then I need to send the new information to you because I won't remember!
My mum don't listen she has 7 unknown profile devices and she says there nothing up with the WiFi she not secure wise on this I need someone to talk to her like a professional person
