However, with modern day computers and development resources, I think making a game with moving and climbable giants like this isn't super difficult anymore. I also picked up this game on a whim. Walked into my local game store, and out of rows upon rows of mediocre used ps2 games, I just so happened to pick this one up and decide to get it. $5 for one of the coolest games I've ever played.
I got it as a birthday present the year after it came out because I played a demo in the store and fell in love with it. Little 8 year old me 100% that game on the ps2.
3:02:39 To this day, the Game Grumps play through of this game, with Arin emotion-bating Dan in preparation for this scene, is one of the fondest memories I have involving this game.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Avion, Phalanx, Hydrus, Dirge, Quadratus, and Gaius are the coolest colossi. Griffin, Phoenix, Spider, Worm are ones I really wished made it into the game. 20 colossi definitely sounds better than 16, right guys?
I mean definitely would have been nice to have had all of the 24 original colossi. Devil, Griffin, Phoenix, Roc, Saru, Sirius, Spider and Worm. You can actually find the location of 6 of the 8 unused and modeled colossi. Saru and Griffin were never placed on the finished map. Saru was an albino monkey that you had to fight in a cave and he would be hanging from the ceiling. Griffin's test area seems to indicate you would have had to use fire to scare the colossus into exposing its weakpoints. Griffin's fight would have probably been too much like the Celosia fight which is why it was cut. Spider was actually in an early demo version and was cut because it required wander to make horizontal slashes while on horseback which was scrapped during development because it was too janky. Generally most of the unused colossi were scrapped because they were having difficulty implementing and balancing the combat strategy. Some of the cut colossi were also cut for redundancy and for time. Fumito Ueda said that he had originally planned for 48 colossi but cut it down to around 24 to model and then the final 16 based off strategy. The final colossi went through a lot of development, originally being like a bull colossi and then later being redesigned into the towering immobile colossi malus.
@@HailKosm you should look into the fan project "beyond the far lands" they're taking all of the data mined colossi and putting them into the game, would recommend
@@EliteY33t2 that's very cool, some of the unused colossi had really cool strategies for defeating them, it was unfortunate that the PS2 tech at the time didn't really allow it. never understood jack’s hangup over Wanders face until i looked up what he looked like in the original and yeah, he definitely looks a lot more baby faced and a lot less determined in this remake
Imagine being Dormin, finally having a chance to be free once more. A long shot to be sure but you think the little human has at least a snowflakes chance in hell because he brought the proper sword. Then the human absolutely bodies half the colossus without breaking a sweat. Dormin probably starts allowing some hope for the first time in the millenia since imprisonment.... and then his champion flings himself off a cliff and spins head over heels into the abyss completely out of the blue.

The story of my introduction to this game is honestly amazing... My roommate at the time came home with it one day. He said he played it for a bit at Best Buy and he described the game as (and I quote) "a game where you ride around on a horse. It seems pretty chill". He literally knew nothing more about it and bought it . That riveting description had us chomping at the bit to play for sure. 😂 So, we humor him and watch him play for the first time and it's pretty much like he described. Then he stumbles onto the first colossus and we all lose our ever loving minds because all the sudden this game made a complete 180. We all took turns finishing it after that and it's still one of my top 5 games.
I'm rewatching this for an nth time, and every time Jack says "In the original, you could do this/that/collect this/that" I'm thinking 'Honey, you can do that here too'
I played this game for the first time a few weeks back, it’s really good. The colossus can sometimes be really annoying to fight but the world is beautiful, almost like a painting, and it’s fun to figure out the colossi’s gimmicks
@@chizknowsdabizyeet7609 maybe not in terms of raytracing but a remake would be cool esp of last guardian where the controls are WAY better to deal with.

Never mind all the violent interludes with giant stone monsters, I could (and did) spend days just cruising around that map on horseback, checking out the scenery. Thanks for rekindling my interest in this game! 2:25:38 Actually, I think at this point, Wander's like, "H-hurkk... Isn't that special."
For me, it was always the fight with the sand worm (Dirge) because unlike any other colossus, it's instantly and constantly on kill mode the whole fight, and never lets up the chase unless stunned. If you fall off Agro while it's still chasing, it's game over for you. The music is also really good at giving the sense of dread it gives off. (Also, although Sean finessed the senses out of it and we never even saw it open its eyes, it has HUGE eyes that really just freak me out.)

I remember the hunt for the "last big secret" in the PS2 version. It was crazy seeing the lengths people would go just to see if the game offered any final secrets
2:04:00 I've made a theory about this, and I just wanted to share it. So Sean was talking about what could've happened and I think I have a solid answer that I made. I think that the people who lived there / worked there whatever were the guards from The Last Guardian, or at least something related to them, if you look, most of the structures look similar to the ones they built in TLG and I also think they lived alongside colossi, and they were like their guardians or workers or something (i get more into this later), and I also have some ideas of what happened and why they abandoned the area. so you know how Dormin wants you to defeat the colossi, and once you do the tendrils come out which are said to be fragments of Dormin's soul, well I think that Dormin arrived and threatened the land, so the soldiers fought back and won, sealing every part of Dormin's soul in the Colossi before completely evacuating, leaving the evil magic behind, and that explains why Dormin wants you to kill the Colossi, to free his soul so he can find and destroy the soldiers. So yeah, thats my theory on what I think happened and why they left, but remember when I said I'll get into that later, well I'll explain that now. So, I believe the Colossi guarded the soldiers most valuable items, or their most important tombs explaining the fact that majority of the Colossi have some sort of armour over them, and when evacuating they made sure to find a land with more mystical beasts, and thats what they found, they mind controlled the tricos, since maybe they were more difficult, but they managed to get them on their side and they used them, as a coverup for the colossi of some sort, instead using them for their dirty work, etc etc. I get if some of you wouldn't like this theory but I just decided to share, tell me your opinions in replies if you like! (EDIT: Also, y'know the shield easter egg in the forest, well I think that isn't just an easter egg, maybe it was put there for something to hint towards the soldiers actually living there, maybe there was multiple shields but most of them got lost, and they only managed to take a few with them.)
Maybe Dormin created the Tricos as free-thinking beings to do their bidding from a distance while the soldiers, extensions of themself, dealt with interior issues after the people left them. Maybe the people left with the shield after Dormin escaped the Valley and designed the Forbidden Lands as a trap and a prison for Dormin’s soon-to-be fragments, sealing their voice in the temple and animating the land and architecture as free-thinking, indomitable beings to guard his power, shoddy craftsmanship but still, before forbidding the lands. Maybe those people _already lived_ in the Forbidden Lands a few centuries before it became so forbidden and did the same thing knowing he would escape eventually _and then_ forbid the lands.
This game needs to be put on PC on Steam. I would buy it for $60 in a heartbeat. Still my favorite game to this date. Really a rare moment in gaming that still holds up to this day.
It’s fun watching you play this because Shadow of the Colossus is very nostalgic to me too! This and Earthbound were my childhood! It deserves all the praise you give it. ❤
This game is, to this day, among the best video game experiences I've ever had. The music, the puzzle factor, the vast emptiness of the land where Dormin was imprisoned. It's gorgeous. You mentioned the fact that SotC is a huge, open world that has nothing to do aside from hunt the Colossi. I love that part of the game. It really adds to the atmosphere and the emotional impact of the story. As for the Colossi themselves, I always hated Dirge, the burrowing Colossus that chases you through the sand; between that one and Hydrus (the water Colossus), they really spooked me. I suppose it has to do with them potentially appearing from where I can't see them. My favorite is Phalanx, the massive flying Colossus near the end of the game that you have to chase on Agro in order to climb it.
My first introduction to this game was watching a friend play through it. I had too much Anxiety Disorder™ to play it myself then, but the music and game direction left an enormous impression on me. And in many ways, it still does. I consider older games like this to be the epitome of game design and storytelling, because it shows rather than tells (making you fill in the blanks), and utilizes unique mechanics that pushed the boundaries of what many people think were possible. If anyone ever does that BTS interview with the Colossus team, please let me know because I really want to see mechanics like this make a resurgence.
I’ve always took the story as mono being their chiefs (head honcho at the end) daughter who was offered as a sacrifice for some reason to prevent dormin coming back. Wander was one of the guard responsible for keeping her safe (why he would be so good at combat and a loyal horse) who fell in love (or was married etc, also why he knows the spell and all that) and decided to try to resurrect her. Forget where or why I thought that but that’s always been my version of the story.
Not to far off. According to the wiki he was a guard of some kind who the princess. She sacrificed herself to prevent a curse and that curse coming from wanderer reviving her

I got this game as a Christmas gift in 2008 or so. I popped it in the ps2 and started what I didn't know would be one of the most interesting and fantastic games I've ever played. It's so simple and elegant in its design but made with such scale and grandeur that I was blown away. A minimal UI and intuitive design to allow the player to discover the colossi without their hand being held. I beat it over and over until I eventually moved on. But wow. As a game designer, I can only hope to create such interesting and absorbing worlds that the player is left wanting to come back over and over and discover something new each playthrough. Who knows Sean... maybe one day you'll play something of mine and maybe see the inspiration I've gained from such titles as this.
It's always "your channel saved me" or "your channel got me through some rough times" This channel gets me through 8 hours that I was supposed to be asleep because I think I look hotter when I'm sleep deprived

Yeah
@@HailKosm there were originally 48 colossi
@@HailKosm you should look into the fan project "beyond the far lands" they're taking all of the data mined colossi and putting them into the game, would recommend
@@EliteY33t2 that's very cool, some of the unused colossi had really cool strategies for defeating them, it was unfortunate that the PS2 tech at the time didn't really allow it. He literally knew nothing more about it and bought it . And they were rewarded
2:04:00
I've made a theory about this, and I just wanted to share it.
"Tell me your opinion" 🤓 no one comments

2:26:07 Oh man, the editing for this moment was just perfect. My sides are in bits!
If anyone ever does that BTS interview with the Colossus team, please let me know because I really want to see mechanics like this make a resurgence.
it's so clear how much you enjoy this game, sean! thanks so much for treating us to another expert playthrough.

A minimal UI and intuitive design to allow the player to discover the colossi without their hand being held. I beat it over and over until I eventually moved on. But wow. As a game designer, I can only hope to create such interesting and absorbing worlds that the player is left wanting to come back over and over and discover something new each playthrough. i’m like always anxious and whenever jack uploads and i tune in my anxiety just immediately goes away, thanks spedicey 😃👍🏼
